This is the third book in the series that I've read and I shall be back for more.
I rarely write reviews (which is bad), but sometimes I read something and feel an author really deserves a pat on the back.
The Ted Darling series is just such a case.
I could ramble on about how it all just... works, but I won't. Read it and see.
The plots of the second and third books are excellent, the characters are fascinating (mostly endearing and accessible and some that irritate me to exactly the right degree) and the writing is smooth, clear and nicely balanced. I enjoyed the first one in the series, too, which provides the back story and lots of 'aha' moments as I read on.
At the outset, I found Ted a little too good to be true, but that's a criticism you could make of most series with a police officer as a leading character. As the series progresses, I'm enjoying seeing how he's not quite as perfect as that. I'll be interested to see how this progresses and will review again in a couple of books' time.
Sincere thanks to the author for making me enjoy a genre I don't read too often - with a few exceptions.
I'm definitely a fan, and would recommend the three I've read wholeheartedly.

This is the second book in what is turnning out to be a rather good series. The characters are well drawn and I've become quite fond of them, especially the hero and his partner. The crime is unfortunately nothing worse than one reads about in the newspapers with all too much regularity, but the author dealt with it sensitively. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series and finding out how the different characters get on with their lives.

This series continues to surprise and please me, so much so that I have now downloaded numbers three and four. The main character, DI Darling, is a complex and interesting character, and his relationship with his team and his partner, Trev, rings very true. The writing style is smooth, the dialogue moves the story forward easily. The other characters, The Ice Queen, Steve, and especially Maurice, come more to life in this outing, and I look for continued understanding of all the players in future books, if this is any indication. This particular story is a tough one to read about - a pedaphile ring with ties to men in high places. There are, necessarily, graphic language and images, but I felt that the author handled them well, just right to tell the story with no gratuitous details. The ending leaves things a bit unclear which I didn't find as a fault. Perhaps, all will become clearer in the next installment, but if not, that's much in the way of life...all things are not tied up neatly. This, to me, is a fine series, one that I am most happy to have found.

This book, as opposed to the first, had a much more difficult story line ... if at all sensitive to pedophilia, you might want to pass ... the book is about catching them and has one rather horrific scene (but it's integral to the story line). Other than this, again, I've enjoyed the characters and we get to know a bit more about Ted's past in this one. I like the reality in these books although I must say that I do miss a bit of the M/M sexual nature ... it is alluded to but never described ... which is okay. The author focuses her writing more on character development and plot - both of which are excellent - and avoids angst and sex scenes (again ok ... but aren't these part of character development?). The main characters are comfortable with who they are and although encounter some difficulty, it isn't too great and when confident, they overcome it. I'm in the middle of the third book and plan to read the fourth ... can't wait for the fifth!

This is a wonderful series! The publisher's blurb put me off with its emphasis on "darkness", but I'm glad I went ahead and read the book anyway. The subject matter is dark, but the author handles it with a light touch, not avoiding the seriousness of the crimes under investigation, but not dwelling on the more gruesome aspects.

The stories are brilliant, with twists and turns, but the characters are what really make this series. In this book we learn more about Ted and his personal demons. The relationships are handled in a realistic manner, and we see growth in the relationship between Ted and Trev and also a realistic and believable unfolding of the work relationship between Ted and his new Superintendent.

Stay tuned for the ending. Its a stunner!!!
These books are like chips: you can't have just one. So I'm off to pick up Book 3 in the Series.

An excellent read which tackles a very tricky and appalling subject. I am getting to know and like the character of Ted Darling a lot more now - not that I didn't like him in the first book, but he came across as perfection. Now he is starting to come out of the woodwork emotionally and he is more "human."

    Good work

What the author lacks in style, she made up for in plot. Sadly there is nothing distinctive in the writing that makes DI Darling stand out, nothing unique, no particular mannerisms, no turn of phrase he consistently uses. He's a nice guy everyone likes. The author doesn't flesh him out into a full fledged person. The plot was good with the tie into his history. During some of the scenes that brought up that history there were good insights into his character. Enhanced the narrative greatly. DI Darling needs more enhancement.

LM Krier introduces a new character, Superintendent Deborah Caldwell, who is Ted Darling’s boss and replaces his former “Super” and friend Jim Baker. The development of their relationship in the midst of a difficult case is one of many highlights of this entry in the Darling series. Ted struggles with an incident from his childhood that relates to the case, and it has an effect on his personal life. LM Krier handles all of this brilliantly, and all of the characters add something meaningful to the plot. I just wish it had been a few pages longer, mainly because her writing is excellent, and I just want the stories to keep going!

5.0 out of 5 stars DI Ted Darling at his best

Crime fiction fanatics - there's a new crime writer on the block and a new detective series to follow!

L M Krier is an experienced writer, former journalist and copy editor with a series of successful books about her move and life in France.

This is the second book in the DI Ted Darling series and although I enjoyed the first book, I liked this one even better. Once more we have the endearing cop with a warm heart and martial arts skills, who follows procedure and actually gets on with his superiors.

The subject is a difficult one and topical at the moment, with high profile people coming under investigation and serving sentences for the most heinous of crimes.

Murder is always nasty but one involving the vulnerable young even more so. The author L M Krier covers the subject of child abuse and murder with great sensitivity. The book focuses on the procedural and background side of the investigation, without inflicting on the reader gratuitous violence, or gruesome details.

There is more about the warm and loving relationship between Ted Darling and his partner Trev, although the investigation brings to the surface one of the DI's own personal demons putting a strain on the relationship.

The introduction of the new female Detective Superintendent known as 'The Ice Queen' is a good addition to the team.

I liked the format of the book, with evenly spaced shorter paragraphs, making it easier to read. The twist at the end of the book was a good 'un and stopped me in my tracks!

As a fan of crime fiction I love finding a new detective series to follow.
Looking forward to the next one in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 3 delivers
Reviewed in Canada on March 31, 2018
After reading the prequel, I had gone on to book1 and found it definitely a first book. For me, predictable, but then I write mysteries and know a wee bit more about plotting. However, this book, #2 in the series hit the ground running and both the murder case investigation and the characters lives unfolded well. Recommended read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping read
Reviewed in Spain on February 20, 2017
I'm loving this series. I first got to know the author through her memoirs, written under the pen name Tottie Limejuice and then decided to read her crime series. I'm absolutely hooked. It's great to read about a part of the world that I'm familiar with as I'm from Cheshire and went to uni in Sheffield. The characters are extremely credible and not like in some crime series. I may be wrong but in the first book, I could see traces of the Cooper and Fry series but this does not detract from any way from what is a gripping read that I can't put down. I'm on book three now and have bought books 4 and 5 already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Good Read!
Reviewed in Australia on March 23, 2017
I am a newcomer to the Ted Darling books and I wasn't sure I could adopt yet another crime series. The author has the uncanny ability to combine finely drawn characters, carefully researched crime evidence and plot twists you simply don't see coming. Pedophilia is a desperately difficult subject to address in any medium, but approaching the subject as fiction can be fraught and is often simply avoided by many writers.

L M Krier not only tackles the subject matter with empathy and objectivity, she delivers an unexpected ending which still has me scratching my head. Add this one to your must read list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new addiction

Here is crime fiction the way it should be. None of the old clichés or formulaic predictable stufff. I don't normally write "unputdownable" in my reviews but this time... I have to. I couldn't pause and sat up half the night twice to finish it. This is dark stuff where the reader starts to doubt everyone in the case apart from Ted himself. Characterisation superb, plot intricate and involving - the ending I wont say a word apart from - Read it yourself!
