A serial killer appears to be targeting vulnerable elderly people in care homes and despatching them in the most cynical way. Ted and his team are struggling to get a lead on who the killer really is. It doesn't help that his newest team member is adding to his problems, rather than helping him to solve them.

Then an unexpected phone call brings devastating news for Ted and his long-term partner, Trevor.

When I'm Old and Grey is the latest instalment in this popular crime series. Look out for more titles in the series.

Mrs Bloggs Book Blogger: 'I couldn't wait to read this book because after reading the first two in the series, I'm now a huge fan of DI Ted Darling and his partner Trev. It certainly didn't disappoint. I think this one is my favourite book of the series. There are so many twists and turns that I ended up suspecting about five different people of the murders.'

Amazon customer: As always the author takes on sensitive and often disturbing subject matter and does so with style. A serial killer who poisons OAPs proves to be a difficult case for the team, added to which they have the new team member who brings with her a multitude of complications. Ted and his partner have some troubling shocks of their own to deal with that takes Teds norm coo! capabilities in dealing with his team and personal life to the limit.

Amazon customer: 'I've read all three Ted Darling books in quick succession after being recommended by a friend. They provide a rather different take on crime fiction with an out of the ordinary leading character who shows sensitivity and compassion to his friends and colleagues while still retaining the intelligence and drive it takes to solve a murder. There's a basic formula at play in most police procedurals. It's not hard to figure out the components: one demented killer, one detective, usually above the law with some interesting quirk or hobby that makes him unique, a love interest or two, the hero's haunted past...I think you get the idea. I always wish that some writer somewhere would break out of that formula but very few do successfully. But on occasion, a writer uses that formula to his advantage and just writes a darn good book.
When I’m Old and Grey is the third novel in what is becoming a great (and hopefully continuing) series featuring Ted Darling, a really good DI, good and compassionate leader, with a touch of vigilante thrown in for good measure. And the Darling character is a good one. Throw in a generic psychopath playing the part of serial killer and you've got a decent but predictable thriller.
Overall, the story was simple, neat and effective. The writing was good, the characters far more developed than those normally encountered in this genre, the action fast paced and the outcome satisfactory. I will definitely be continuing this series.

Elders are dying in nursing homes and in a hospital. They're old, so maybe it's from natural causes. On the other hand, maybe not. Meanwhile, DI Ted Darling finally gets the new DC he's been asking for. Good deal, right? Maybe not. And out of the blue, both Ted and his partner, Trev's, mothers show up. Neither man has seen his mother for years and years. Why have they popped up and what do they want? Reunions are the order of the day? Maybe not. All in all, a very readable book. Krier deals with some very current, powerful (and sometimes divisive) issues and how different people react to them. I like the characters in these books and definitely plan to read all 10 of them.

I love DI Ted Darling, along with his partner, Trevor. After reading this third book in the series, I have come to think of them as old friends. They really do come alive. It takes a good writer to make that happen, and L.M. Krier is excellent at breathing life into her characters. The plot unfolds at a good clip, and the mystery is challenging enough to keep you guessing. Each book can stand alone, but I enjoy reading a series like this in the order they were written. Nuances develop, characters are revealed more in depth, and each book improves over the previous one. Easy to read, but challenging enough for any crime/mystery book lover. I was impressed with the extensive research the author must have done for this book, on the topic of poisonous plants. She comes up with fresh ideas for each new book. She is a good writer, and her books are unique.

This is the third in the D I Darling series, and I continue to be impressed with the writing, with the character development, and with the story lines. Having read the first two books in rather quick succession, I pondered whether I should continue or take a break. I have so enjoyed Ted's character and getting to know the team members, Maurice, Mike, Steve, and even the Ice Queen, that I decided to push on. What is particularly impressive, is that this author varies her stories and approach to the degree that each book seems fresh. She also gives some backstory, as a refresher, I'd gather, but does it deftly. This time out, the graphic violence is absent as the mystery involves the random killing of the elderly in a passive way - no blood or gore. This mystery also ties into Ted Darling's personal life (no spoiler) so that more is known about his past. These are very approachable, likable characters including Trev, Ted's partner, and the newest member of the team, Jezza. The only fault I might find at all is that Jezza's character turned around, perhaps, too quickly. Now I am concerned that there are only three more books in the series. A reviewer of an earlier book was totally put off by the gay relationship, but I think it is handled in the most eloquent and unoffensive way. I hope Ms. Krier (pseudonym) doesn't stop at number six!

This plot covered elder abuse, which is very interesting as it is currently in the news here in Australia. Ted Darling finds him mum after a period of thirty-odd years when he thought she had abandoned him. The resultant slow reconcililation, in between Ted and his team investigating a killer of old women, was riveting story-telling. A new member of the team poses a problem for Ted, but in true "Ted" fashion, he finds out what the problem is and manages to solve it.

    Again, a good read.

I really like this series, but this book has problems. The two that bugged me most was the constant use of "throw up" not meaning vomiting in a book where a lot of vomiting was central to the storyline and the stupid idea to let a suspect leave their home when it was surrounded. Really??????!!!!!

Books one and two were fairly good so I took a chance and ordered the series. I think the author hit her stride in book 3. The plant poisonings were really interesting; I also liked the setting of and information about homes for seniors. Relationships among characters are deepening by this third book and a new addition to the force adds lots of pizzaz.

As usual a very good read. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in the series and am now reading book 4. I recommend this series for anyone who enjoys a well written cosy style mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another terrific DI Darling murder mystery
Reviewed in the Netherlands on December 1, 2016
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and so I was pretty sure I'd like this one too, but actually, it's the best one yet for me. Although the plot structure is not all that different from the first two, this one was a bit twistier, a bit more puzzling and the characters I have grown to love, especially the secondary characters were all that much more developed. I am especially fond of Bizzie and Steve, and if course I am besotted with Trev, but who isn't? For me, the fact that with each book, we get to learn something more about the main protagonists too is great character development and gives them all more depth. The storyline is a tough one: elderly people being poisened in old people's homes and even in hospital. The first case reported is Ted's (DI Darling's) own grandmother, which makes his involvement a bit difficult, but after three other deaths by similar gruesome means have been uncovered, he cannot take a back seat any longer. As a reader, I love trying to follow the puzzle and seeing if I can get to the solution before the detectives, but this time, I didn't! It was great! I was totally riveted to the book and it only took me two days to read it. I should also add that L M Krier's writing is noticeably more accomplished in this book and it was really well edited too. It's as if the author has settled down into the series, so I'm thrilled to know there are another two published and one more in the works. This is a police procedural series that I will be reading for as long as Ms Krier keeps writing them! I am totally hooked!

I like this writer, and purchased the following books after reading the first. Once again, this book was a very good read. I like the back story about the characters as this makes the story much more interesting, and you are more likely to want to read about them as well as the cases they solve in the following books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another DI Ted Darling (and Trev) cracker!

I couldn't wait to read this book because after reading the first two in the series, I'm now a huge fan of DI Ted Darling and his partner Trev. It certainly didn't disappoint. I think this one is my favourite book of the series. There are so many twists and turns that I ended up suspecting about five different people of the murders.

Any of the books in the DI Ted Darling series could be read as a stand alone, so if you see this book, or any of the others in the series on offer, then grab it quick but I can guarantee that you'll be hooked and will then need to read the whole series, because
in each book, as the story unfolds, we learn more and more about the two central characters, DI Ted Darling and his partner Trev. Different layers of their individual backgrounds are revealed and in this book we meet two important characters from both of their pasts. In this book we are also introduced to the new and intriguing character of the female officer DC Vine.
L M Krier is a gifted storyteller, who reveals the plot in such a way that holds the attention of the reader right through to the end. I couldn't put the book down. Wanted to savour it but found myself racing through to the final denouement. Now I can't wait for the next one!
