4.5 out of 5 stars 1,048 ratings

A teenager is found naked and wandering in a lane near Stockport. He can't answer any questions about the serious injuries he's sustained, only repeatedly recite a biblical passage.

DCI Ted Darling's team take the case and discover he's been missing for six months – and he's not the only young person to have suffered the same fate. Ted's tied up in an important court case where the father of the young defendant seems prepared to stop at nothing to bring the case crashing down around him. It doesn't help when he's told his team must lose a member and Ted has to choose who it will be.

Whoever the kidnapper is, he seems to have a set timetable for his abductions.

Can Ted catch him before he strikes again?

Review

Amazon customer: 'I love the fact that these books are so immediately accessible. The storyline grabs straight away, and you are immersed in Ted Darling's working life once again from the first page and throughout. It is a great achievement to be able to describe such horrific events while limiting the grisly gory detail at the same time, such that the reader, while appalled, is not terrified. No sensationalism for the sake of it here.
I also like that the main storyline, while always the top note, is interspersed with other events, ongoing, personal and work related. As is life.'

Amazon Customer: 'A roller coaster ride with some gasp aloud moments, I read it in a day, really didn't want to either put it down or for it to end.Well researched and plotted with characters with depth and personality.'

Amazon customer: 'The characters are authentic & wholly believable. Watching them evolve and grow throughout the series is a treat.
In this episode, Lesley explores some gritty and uncomfortable topics in a knowledgeable and realistic way, yet retaining compassion.'

Cannot believe it's #8 in tne series already! Krier's writing keeps getting better and better. The story lines are similar in all 8 books, but that's because they all have the same interesting and fun characters that we have come to love. But the crimes and victims are varied enough, from book to book, that we don't grow tired of these crime procedurals. Preacher Man was an easy read, well plotted, and tightly written, without excess wanderings. Also, there were enough 'red herrings' that I wasn't sure who the perpetrator was very early on. I liked the ending here better than some of the other books. Keep 'em coming, Ms. Krier!

The main and support characters are well written, likeable and believable. I was taken by the story straight away and it was a good combination of policing and personal. I really like the individual stories about the characters...their backgrounds and things that are going on in their lives at the same time they're trying to do their best in their jobs.
Great story once again, looking forward to another.

This series, featuring DCI Darling and his partner, Trev, continues to be a very good read. In this installment, young men are being kidnapped, then released months later, mentally and physically damaged. Ted Darling and his team go to great lengths to solve the crimes and prevent more abductions. The missing star is because some of the perpetrator's motivation seemed thin to me, and some aspects of the crime were not fully explained - especially the Biblical references and numeric clues. As I have indicated in the past, I would like Trev to be a more well-rounded character; he is still a gorgeous gay man who likes to cook, party with friends, and snuggle cats. As he is fluent in many languages, is smart and well educated, there is clearly more to him that could be used to flesh out his character. There is a sub-story that rings true - the plight of the homeless and the gaps in social services to help them. That doesn't just happen in the UK. You can look around any American city and see the same. A final sub-story, Bill's impending forced retirement, shows up the very humanistic nature of Ted, one nice fellow! Number nice, please.

The trial of the psychopath from the last book is finally going on trial, and DCI Ted Darling's testimony is vital to conviction. Will one of the the psychopath's parents try to use his partner, Trev. tp affect his testimony? To make matters wrose, there is someone out there torturing teenage boys--first making them disappear and then turning them loose, naked and babbling, in remote areas. If that's not enough, budgets are being cut again, and Ted has to give up on of the DC's on his team to try to balance his budget. Like most of the Ted Darling books, this is a page turner. Ted is a charming, sympathetic character; as are most of his team. This is a series that seems to get better with each new book. There is only one more left in the series--book #10--which I intend to order as soon as this is sent.

Absolutely love the Ted Darling series! This book is at different times gripping, suspenseful, funny, and touching. Ted Darling and his team of detectives face a tough case, and Ted also has to deal with budget cuts, a crisis involving his partner, Trev, and another calamity involving a work colleague. All of the characters have distinctive personalities and every part of the story fits perfectly. Can’t wait for Book 9! Well done, LM Krier!

I know this series is a bit pollyannaish, too nice, too polite, too perfect. But the way the world is it is necessary to occasionally inhabit a kinder gentler world that always gets the bad guy who inevitability is a monster doing monstrous things. I will look for the next one.

Am trying to think of a title for book nine, continuing the theme. "You don't have to say.....". perhaps?
More and more I can see Tom Hollander in the role. He has such an expressive face.
Well done LMK and keep up the good work. I insist!

Earlier this year I stumbled across the first Ted Darling book, read it, fell in love with the characters and the writing and by the end of half term had read the 7 books in the series. L M Krier's writing is beautiful, I find that her stories engage me from the word go, the characters are beautifully sculptured and she always leaves me wanting more. I re-read the Teds 1 to 7 over the last few weeks and then downloaded Ted 8 this morning I was once again enthralled and unable to do anything other than read today till I had finished. The characters have grown a little more in my mind, the trials and tribulations they faced kept me reading on and wanting to know more. And the ending, in my opinion ... superb! Thank you Ted and Trev for another peek into your life.
