Mother, was it worth it? (The Sell The Pig Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 255 ratings

Tottie and her eccentric family moved to France in search of a better life for her nearly nonogenarian mother who suffered from dementia.

As her full-time carer, Tottie listened to daily recitations of her favourite saying: 'Mother, mother, it's a bugger, sell the pig and buy me out.” Catch up now with Tottie in the AM years – After Mother – as she starts her new life in the rural Livradois-Forez region of the Auvergne, living in Tottie's Grottage.

Meet the local inhabitants, from exotic birds to colourful characters like the Bin Pickers, Library Lady and the Bowing Farmer. All are described with Tottie's familiar gently ironic humour. Discover the procedure behind the Frogification of Tottie, and if her bid for French nationality is successful.

'
Mother Was It Worth It?' was always intended to be the concluding part of the Sell the Pig series, which began with 'Sell the Pig' and 'Is That Billinge Lump?' Somehow the little Pigs kept on breeding, and now there are six.

'I read this latest instalment of Totties tales in almost one sitting. The story of moving to France with Mother and brother and the ups and downs, happenstances and hilarities have been a joy.Sometimes tear stained and bittersweet, sometimes hilarious but always written delightfully .We mourn the loss of Mum at the beginning, but as Tottie moves to her new grottage and new freedom the love for France and her adopted Auvergne shines.' Amazon customer

'It was yet again like visiting Tottie`s home and being invited in for a cup of tea and a chat, with Tottie doing the talking, whilst I.listened, laughed, and even shed a tear. The authors story telling is fantastic, her descriptions of people, places and event so vivid that you could be at the Grottage and holidaying in the Auvergne.
I highly recommend you purchase this book and allow yourelf to be immersed into rural France for a few hours.' Amazon customer

'I think this was my favourite of the three Sell the Pig books (so far!). It has a really nice feel to it as Tottie truly embraces French life and its culture. There is more interaction with the locals and exploration of the surroundings than in the other books, and you get a proper feel for life in rural France... without even having to get off the sofa.
I can't wait to see what Tottie has planned next.' George Mahood

About L M Krier, also known as Tottie Limejuice

Retired journalist, freelance copywriter and copy editor Lesley Krier Tither writes crime fiction, the Ted Darling Crime Series, under the name L M Krier, as well as travel memoirs under the pen name of Tottie Limejuice. Most people now call her Tottie or Tots.

The Ted Darling crime books are set in Lesley's home-town, Stockport, on the edge of Greater Manchester. Books in the series: The First Time Ever, Baby's Got Blue Eyes, Two Little Boys, When I'm Old and Grey, Shut Up and Drive, Only the Lonely, Wild Thing, Walk On By, Preacher Man, Cry for the Bad Man, Where the Girls Are, Down Down Down, The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird, Dirty Old Town, The End of the Line, It's Oh So Quiet, A Woman's Heart, No Way to Say Goodbye, Everybody Hurts Sometimes, Sweet Little Lies, and Not to Tell (22 books)

The First Time Ever is the retrospectively-written prequel to the series so can be read first or second. It is available translated into French under the title Darling.

Lesley is also the author of the dark crime fiction book, Looking for Lulu, under the pen name of Carl Granger. It came about because of a claim someone made that readers could always tell a woman writing as a man. Lesley took up the challenge - nobody guessed!

All books are available from Amazon (in most countries) in eBook and paperback format and the series prequel, The First Time Ever, is now available as an audiobook, read by professional voice artist Christopher Corcoran. None of Lesley's books include AI in any form.

Lesley is a former journalist, working as both a criminal court and coroner's court reporter. She also worked as a case tracker for the Crown Prosecution Service, and for a firm investigating irregularities in offshore finance. Her other jobs have included owning and running a holiday riding centre and acting as a 'charity mugger', lying in wait to sign up shoppers for a wildlife charity.

She secured her first major writing contract at the age of sixteen when she sold a television piece to a Hollywood production company, for what seemed at the time to be a fortune. Her newspaper editor father claimed it was more than he had ever been paid for a single piece of writing.

Her interests centre around nature and wildlife and encompass dogs, wild camping and organic gardening. She lives in the Auvergne region of Central France and holds dual French/British nationality. Her current dog is a rescued border collie, Rosie.

Writing as Tottie Limejuice, Lesley has also published six books in the Sell the Pig travel memoirs series: Sell the Pig, Is That Billinge Lump?, Mother Was It Worth It? Biff the Useless Mention, Angling Bumateurs, and Trot On!

She also writes humorous travelogues as Tottie Limejuice: the Tottie's Travels series: Hobbit House in Italy, Two Jills and a Tots, and Pride Comes Before a Bedbug. In addition she has produced a humorous look behind the scenes of novel writing, No Girl on this Train, jointly written with Kate Pill.

Lesley also writes children's fiction, mystery/adventure, as L M Kay: The Dog with the Golden Eyes, shortly being published in parallel French/English text, for learners of either languages, for ages 7+ - 70+.

Having now read the full 'Sell the Pig' trilogy, I can heartily say, HUZZAH! I preordered both the Kindle and hard cover, just to be sure I'd get one of them as quickly as possible. I have always admired people who have the courage to leave their homes and move into an entirely new situation. Who are these people? What makes them tick? In her books, Tottie lets the reader into her life which is joyful and optimistic and real. She is a bright, interesting, and interested person. In this latest offering, she explores her new digs in France and brings us along for the ride. Meeting her neighbors and their animals, taking in rescue dogs, dealing with customer service reps, French bureaucrats, doctors and mechanics: daily life stuff for sure, yet she captivates the reader.

This is more than a travel book (albeit a great one). It's a story of a "mad" "English" "hippie" who has created an envious life for herself and graciously shares it with us. Now I can begin the waiting for what comes next, or perhaps, before!

This series is entertaining as the English author describes her move to a tiny settlement in the Auvergne region of central France. This third book in the series is my favorite thus far, as she adds touches of humor when she recounts her escapades in her new home of France. Will she succeed in her attempt to become a French citizen? No spoiler from me as she works with the dreaded French bureaucracy to achieve that goal. Can she transform the cottage and add electricity, running water and a septic system? What is the “bitey snake”?; the answer is the camera she swallowed for her endoscopy. Tottie wrote that it was like swallowing a live anaconda. I hope that is her imagination and that she has not, in fact, swallowed a live anaconda (ha ha). Tottie gives funny names to things in her life, calling her cottage “the grottage”, grotty and cottage combined. She is sure some of her neighbors think of her as “that eccentric English lady who lives alone in the countryside.” I think she sounds like a fun neighbor.

Okay, I know that's not your real name! I really loved your story. It's not just any sixty-plus lady who would be willing to take on all you did, fight all those battles with French burocracy, handle some health problems, and fix up a "grotty cottage"! "Tottie" (it's not her name, but the tale is true) has to be admired for her guts and humour.

She fixes up (what sounds like) a lost-cause cottage in the Auvergne, with the usual problems with handymen. Yet she must have a charm of her own, because the French people she comes into contact with sound mostly like pleasant, reasonable and reliable people. Of course the fact that she speaks French must help a lot!

I liked her never-give-up attitude, and her willingness to entertain a few visitors and ferry them around in what sounded like a rather iffy vehicle. I would urge people of 55+ who believe they're over the hill and should do nothing more than knit something for a grandchild, to read this book and realise life does not stop just because you get older!

Thanks Tottie -- a very good read. I haven't read your other books, and hope to get round to them.

The author seems to write so easily about her life and experiences in her adopted homeland. The prose just flows seamlessly. She makes the reader imagine he or she is feeling, hearing, smelling and seeing everything in person. I really enjoyed this series of books and am so glad I read them all. Hard to pick a favorite because they each are so easy to read and so enjoyable. I would recommend reading them in order, though. 1. Sell the Pig. 2. Is that Billinge Lump? 3. Mother, Was it Worth it?

I have just finished the latest memoir from Tottie Limejuice and enjoyed it very much indeed. I felt as if I was on a lovely visit with a good friend and caught up nicely with what has been happening to her since the last instalment. Ms Limejuice has a wicked sense of humour which manifests itself in her use of words, great fun! Such a pleasure to have such wry observation on the subject of making a permanent home off the beaten track in France. I really enjoyed the details of the renovation of her Grottage together with her description of the many side trips she took exploring the Auvergne region, very entertaining. I highly recommend all three of her books.

The third book in "Sell The Pig" series is equally as good. Tottie has bought a "grottage" and she tells of all the dramas of having it renovated and then moving in. She continues to take short trips around the Auvergne region of France with her beloved dogs and friends. I am really enjoying these books so much, and have now moved on to the fourth book in what was going to be a trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Tottie Limejuice !

Tottie's latest book is memorable, after devouring the first two in the series , I read ' Mother was it worth it?' in one sitting, just couldn't put it down. Following the rollercoaste tale of her move to France with frail mother and eccentric brother , the poignancy, humour , and pure exhilaration of the challenge just makes for an enormously satisfying read. Tottie is a born writer, it felt as if she was taking me by the hand, showing me places and situations that immediately came to life as I read. Heart rending at times, and hilarious at others, her gift is in portraying people and feelings with absolute honesty and detail. I sincerely hope that this book won't be the last in the series, Tottie is an author to be followed with great enjoyment.

I have just finished Tottie's third book on my kindle - I enjoyed the first and second in the series immensely and was so looking forward to another good read. I was not disappointed! This is just like having a chat with Tottie and I should know - we were sitting at my kitchen table having a good natter last Wednesday afternoon. I have to confess to being the 'Linda' in the book and can vouch for all the stories Tottie tells so well; this is authentic Tottie, she writes as she speaks and it is almost like having her at the table enjoying a chat and a cup of tea. The beautiful countryside, the colourful characters and the rural french way of life she describes are authentically Auvergat too. This book will make you smile and laugh out loud - Tottie is great company …… and she does indeed make delicious cakes and biscuits!

Having read Tottie's first two books I was pleased to find out that there was more to find out about her life in France. Having holidayed in the Auvergne for several years it was lovely to hear someone else as enthusiastic about it as us. I quite envy her her simple lifestyle and her ability to speak so well in French. I struggle to do the basics. I have since been on her website and discovered some gorgeous pictures of her border collies. I thoroughly enjoyed all her books and would recommend them. An easy and entertaining read.
