Book Blogger: From the moment I first clapped eyes on this stunning cover I couldn't wait to read this book. I am familiar with the author's writing but Lesley has turned her hand at writing a children's book. Firstly I have to say that one of the things that makes this book so special is the beautiful illustrations throughout the story. They are stunning.

In this story we meet Nicolas James Corrigan who lives with his aunt. Nicholas doesn't speak and while out with his aunt he meets a strange dog and discovers they can understand each other's thoughts. Nicholas James was a key witness to a crime when he was little and now The Man Who Did the Very Bad Thing is back and looking for him. But can his faithful new friend protect him?

The idea of this story is simply wonderful with Nicolas James and the Strange dog's friendship grows from the second they meet. The author has done a brilliant job of portraying this throughout the story building a brilliant bond between them.

And to be totally honest this is what I needed after just getting my reading mojo back. It is an easy and captivating read where you can't help but love the characters...oh apart from the very bad man. He's the baddie in the story so he isn't meant to be loved.

Even though this is a children's novel it can be read my people of all ages and it is one of those stories that adults will love. I certainly did. And I hope there is more to come from Nicolas I have my fingers crossed that this is going to be a series.

Amazon customer: This book is absolutely delightful. Whether you are in your early 70's like me or 10 yrs old like my granddaughter, it has everything. A disturbed child, helped by a lovely Aunt and a beautiful dog with whom the child has an almost magical understanding. The author has a wonderful understanding of adults, children and animals, all brought together by an easily understood story line. I recommend that every grandparent should buy this book for their grandchildren but make sure you read it first, it will do your heart good too!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazon review: Whilst written with a younger reader in mind, this book will appeal to all age groups.
Well paced & suspenseful without being frightening, the plot artfully draws the reader in.
Cleverly crafted and without being at all patronising, but 'Wordwise' enabled, if needed.
Although I read the book in one sitting, the chapters are just the right length to give a younger reader a sense of real accomplishment.
Absolutely loved it.

This may have been written especially for children, but as a grandmother I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found myself holding my breath as The Man pursued the boy and his dog. Thank goodness for happy endings!

What a delightful story, for adults and children. Short and sweet tale of a little boy and a dog who communicate without words and bring love into each other's life just when needed.

Nicholas stopped speaking after The Very Bad Thing happened. His mother is gone and he now lives with his Very Nice Aunt. His aunt lives in a small cottage and never pushes him to do things he doesn't want to do. She walks him to school and to his therapist because she knows Nicholas doesn't like to be out on the streets by himself.

One day when Nicholas and his aunt are on their way to the store they spot a dog on the street looking up to the sky. This dog looks like he's a stray. When Nicholas speaks to the dog in his mind the dog answers back. It turns out they have a special bond and a telepathic connection. Mikey, the dog, follows Nicholas and his aunt back to their house. He then helps Nicholas to overcome his fears one step at a time. When they see The Man That Did The Very Bad Thing Nicholas and Mikey are doing everything they can to get him arrested.

The Dog with the Golden Eyes is a story full of suspense, which is perfect for kids. L.M. Kay's writing style is exactly right for children. She uses words that they would use and the story is perfectly understandable even though situations and people are not mentioned by name. I loved the fact that a boy who doesn't speak formed a special connection with a dog. Having a young child and a dog myself I could easily relate to the bond children have with animals. The fact that the story also evolves around Christmas made it even more enjoyable to read. I can imagine reading this book together with my son when he is a bit older.

This book really is worth a look, and not just for kids, I see it as a 'grandparent and child special moments book' it will be a big hit with the older generation who want something to share with their grandchildren, and I think a grandparent would appreciate the amazing illustrations that appear throughout the story to captivate the imagination of a young mind. So if you have your grandchildren coming to stay make sure you have the paperback on your shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant tale by a master storyteller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 28, 2021
Well paced, lots of detail but lots of space for the reader to fill in. The references to adults by the part they play in the story were really clever. Really impressed by the sensitivity of references to the selective mute syndrome, traumatic recall and possible ASD.

The dog was a really good conduit for boys emotional recovery, enabling him to build resilience.

There was a good measure of sentimentality, much of it was inferred, again enabling the reader to interpret as they may.

The structure will enable kids to read in manageable bits, simple language, rich vocabulary and appropriate grammar all setting a good example of great storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful tale.

Although a children's story, this is a short and suspenseful tale suitable for adult readers as well.
It was gripping from the very beginning, which is hardly surprising as the author, Lesley Krier also writes the excellent DI Darling crime books.
This is recommended reading for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages

This is an excellently written book for people from the age of 8 to the age of 88. The story deals with some dark themes in a clever and believable way. I love the character of the aunt and the small boy, and the way the author deals with the tragedy that happened before the book opens. The hero of course, is the dog and what a hero he is.

I already know that this is one of those books that will go onto the shelf marked “comfort blanket“. It is one I will read over and over again.
