Grave: A Sci-fi Romance (The Sanctuary Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 96 ratings

Pregnant and running for her life, Nora flees for the refuge known as Morala. Instead, she finds herself on Kilton, a sanctuary for escaped criminals. Now Nora must adapt to her new home and hope that no one realizes who she really is, or she and her baby will face death.

Grave, an ex-gladiator who fled captivity many years ago, built the sanctuary known as Kilton and acts as it’s gatekeeper. Unable to control his demons, Grave is feared by all and finds it harder everyday to be around others. When Grave greets their newest arrival, he is surprised to see a purple-haired pixie at his gates rather than the usual hardened criminal.

Not knowing what Nora runs from, Grave grants her the asylum she seeks, but something about this pixie is different from anyone he has ever met. When he discovers the secret Nora hides beneath her clothes, will Grave push her away like he has everyone else, or will he fight her battles and his own to finally find happiness?

***Review from The Magic Book Corner' "He was a monster trying to fit in with society. An outcast. A murderer. A giant.'He is one of the most complex characters I've come across, and a perfect book boyfriend - if there was ever one!"

Lyndsay began her writing adventure when she moved to Colorado with her husband. She has always loved stories and has been an avid reader for most of her life. Her fascination with science and astronomy started in school and only grew as the years went on. Most of her inspiration comes from day to day interactions as well as movies, game’s and articles. In October of 2016, Lyndsay and Joe had their first baby, a little girl named Hayley. When not writing, Lyndsay is playing with her two dogs, Skip and Peaches, or running and kick boxing at the gym.

Wow, This was such a great book. I really loved all the characters and I just couldn't put it down. The story was written so well that I could actually picture the characters in vivid detail in my mind. I would definitely recommend this for anyone even if your not a sci fi reader. I can't wait for her next book to come out in this series. LOVED IT!

Whitlock always manages to show political motivations and their effect on the everyday person. This time we have a sanctuary for mostly criminals and anyone else on the run, but there are still rules. Nora is an innocent thrown into a political maelstrom but manages to escape to save her baby only to find herself in the wrong sanctuary. Grave is not a criminal but his years as a slave and gladiator gave him a hair trigger reaction and very skittish about being around people. Nora treats him just like a normal person and likes him which intrigues and scares him at the same time. This is their story and I really like it.

I loved this. There were times it was a bit cheesy, but it wasn’t too much. The description makes it seem like a really dark book, but it’s really not – there’s always hope.

Enjoyed the secondary characters as well. I’m looking forward to their stories.

While I enjoyed the story, there were a lot of errors that were quite distracting. You're/your, then/than etc. In addition many of the characters were one dimensional and predictable and I didn't feel like I really got to know anyone except the two main characters.

That said, the story itself was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the worlds the author created, but I wish there had been more to them. I had a hard time imagining because a lot of the story was told to the reader rather than described. In many places it read like a YA book, but with adult themes. I believe that with some solid editing and a bit of revising this could easily be a 4 star series and I do plan to read the next book.

I do have to give credit where it's due. Putting your work out there to have readers like me give harsh criticism takes a a lot ofbravery. My comments are not meant to be cruel but to encourage the author to give us more. For awful books I don't even take the time to review them, but this book holds promise.

Nora is from Yunnika, a rural farming kingdom. She and her family are farmers. She is at the market one day when the elderly king comes by, looking for a wife, and decides on her. Her consent is not required. Yunnika is a very religious planet ruled by the sacred scrolls and Hayme. t h e priest and the only one allowed to read the scrolls. The King is trying for a male heir, but 25 times before, Hayme's ceremony found the pregnancy carried was female and aborted it,banishing the mother. Nora is pregnant. Her ceremony is tomorrow. Her maid helped her plan an escape. Yunnika is an agricultural planet, but there are two sanctuary planets, one for criminals and one for women. There is also a high technology planet, technology banned in religious Yunnika. Nora plans on escaping to the women's sanctuary planet, but can't read the Alien Script and stows away on the transport to the criminal planet instead. The criminal sanctuary was set up by three genetically modified gladiators who had been tortured by their masters. They fought a war to secure a treaty for their sanctuaries. Nora is trapped in the sanctuary with the criminals and the gladiators who keep the peace, since further space travel will harm her baby. How will Nora survive in the harsh refuge, of the sanctuary? What will happen when her pregnancy starts to show? Will she find a protector? Will the King find her? Interesting primary and secondary characters. Interesting stories with good progression and , a lot of action. Warm romance with multiple characters growing and developing. I really want to find out what happens next. Will hopefully be looking for the next in the series. Nice HEA.
