Reentering civilian life is difficult for soldiers, even if they havenot experienced combat. Terry Jackson is an amiable Sandhurst graduatesearching for a career after leaving the British Army. While he has nothingagainst his family or his native York, he does not long to return there.
He receives training with British World Airways and whileawaiting his first posting, is tasked with what appears to be a routineassignment. A pilot has gone missing in Alaska. Everything should be resolvedquickly and without much to do. Instead, Jackson finds himself enmeshed insomething that will impact not only his future career, but also his personallife.
Indications are that Greg Wilton, the missing pilot, has gone into Russia. Even though the Soviet Union has recently collapsed, theinnate Russian passion for slow-moving bureaucracy and secrecy are still verymuch alive. What appears to be the case, Jackson learns, is not necessarily thetruth. Russia still is, as Churchill said, "A riddle wrapped in amystery inside an enigma."
Gradually, enough is revealed to Jackson aboutwhat really became of Greg Wilton. The mystery involves Jackson's wife andchildren, as well as other people from that investigation early in his career, and literally follows him around the globe.
In the hands of a less-talented author, thisstory would seem, forced, hurried, and confusing. Thankfully, none of thathappens here. Every so often there is a gap of a few years, as Jackson assumesnew positions with British World Airways. Enough detail is given about thesenew postings to give sufficient background, but not too much for readers toabsorb or to slow down the main action of the plot. Nothing essential is eitheromitted or thrown in via some Deus ex machine twist.
As with any good story, the action quickens towardsthe end, and readers are kept in suspense. Readers also get a good feel for thecomplex characters; no one is totally bad, no one is toogood-to-be-true. I heartily recommend this book.

About the author

ROLF RICHARDSON is a mongrel English/Norwegian who loves to travel, starting with service in the RAF, flying Britain's first jet fighter, the Meteor; thereafter 25 years as a British Airways pilot on Argonauts, Britannias, VC10s and 747s.
He then became a roaming photographer, visiting around 110 countries, with over 15,000 photos sold. He has worked his passage on cruise ships by giving lectures. Taken 3 months to drive round Australia.
A few years ago he set out to put his experiences to further use by writing a series of 'Easy Read' books: thrillers with a dash of history, romance and humour.
First came 'THE LAST WEISS', set during the final stages of WW2 in two of his favourite countries, Germany and Norway.
In COFFIN CORNER we move to a fictional airline in 1960s Singapore, with excursions to Australia.
With BEAR BUGGER CRUISE it's off to the Caribbean and the mystery disappearance of a cruise ship passenger.
In NIGHT WATCHMAN we stay in Britain, where disaster strikes the political establishment.
ROAD TO MANDALAY starts in the French Alps, but finishes on the Road to Mandalay. Reason: the strange new world of cyber power.
In STASILAND we're again in Germany, now united but with echoes of the past when death stalks the River Elbe.
LETTER FROM GALAPAGOS is a mystery set in the South Seas with the disappearance of a yacht.
TEA WITH RASPUTIN starts in Alaska, but ends in the mafia world of St.Petersburg

Back at airline HQ near Heathrow, Mr Halford, Head of Security, is tasked with finding someone to investigate Greg’s case. His team are working to capacity and no one can be spared. So he scrapes the bottom of the barrel and assigns recent recruit, Terry Jackson to the investigation.
Fresh out of training school and awaiting his first posting, Terry flies to Alaska, brimming with enthusiasm at being trusted with such a mission. Join Terry in his investigation, where intrigue, suspense, mystery, humour and even a little romance lie in wait.
Review: This was an ok book. The book did well to keep a creepy vibe throughout it and the book was full of thrilling and mysterious moments. The book did well with the world building as well and the character development was ok.
However, I felt like the pacing was a bit too slow for my liking and the mystery was predictable in my opinion.
Verdict: It’s a good mystery book.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2020Tea with Rasputin is interesting. I enjoyed the world travel and intrigue of this book. I wish the pace had been a little more consistent, however. It started off a little slow for me, quickly picked up, then slowed again before picking up for the last bit. I won't give any spoilers, but let's say the story ended strong. This is a great book for mystery lovers (I don't think I'd consider it a strong thriller). Overall a nice way to pass the time.
