- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2023Reading this was like eating a banana split with all its flavors and textures. It had so many stories within the main story as it was being told. The characters became friends, whether playing a big parts or the smaller supporting parts. It is a diverse group of people that I just love. My minds eye could see it all because of the author's gift of storytelling! I'd give it a solid ten stars if it were possible.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2018The kingdom of Gaia is recovering from a horrific battle of bloodshed and magic. There are 6 elemental stones that help a chosen mage (Vassal) wield great magic over said element. The Vassals must find courage to wield their element and stand against the many threats to the kingdom.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2018I recieved an ARC of this book for my honest review, and I have to say that I am excited about where this Elemental Chronical's series by Ross Kingston is heading. I love the courage of Alicea and roughness of Rufus, though at times I question his sanity. I love the affect Alicea has on Rufus. The banter between Alicea and Rufus will keep you wanting more. The characters are well written and really draw you into the story, making you feel as though you are part of it. I was captivated by how each character developed within the intricate storyline of the world Ross created. I am so looking forward to reading more of this series. It's a must read for those who like young adult books.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2017Just finished Ross Kingston's 'Awakening', the first volume in The Elemental Chronicles sequence. I understand that Ross is pitching the series at young adults. I think he has nailed the tone in that regard. The death count is a bit high for younger kids - although the violence is not particularly graphic, almost incidental. It is also hard to warm to male lead Rufus and his wont to murder indiscriminately. That is, of course, before Alicea knocks some of the rough edges off him. Their dialogue is at times cutting, edgy, and on other occasions, laugh-out-loud hilarious. Found myself chuckling often as their characters developed. Ross does dialogue very well! The writing brought out the characters and also contrasted them quite well. Some you despise straight out of the box, Jex and Arissam, for example, others are exasperating, think Mordrik, who you just want to slap. And others are so likeable. My point is that Ross has cleverly crafted characters that make you feel. They are not bland or superficial, but multi-dimensional characters that touch you, that grow with the page count. With that, it is also a rollicking good read with an awful lot going on and hard to put down. Is there a negative? Well, yes there is. *spoiler alert* I was so looking forward to Alicea wrapping that horror Jex up in a whirling torrent of water, lifting him high into the air and dropping his sorry carcass over a cliff somewhere! But no. I expect that might happen in future. I am told that future volumes will see Jex's character develop and that we might get some insight around his behaviour. I look forward to that, however, in the meantime, he seriously needs to die painfully. :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2018I received an ARC of this story through Hidden Gems and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I enjoyed the start to this series. The characters are great and the plot is solid. Alicea and Rufus both feel very real as characters which is always a plus. The book was a bit slow for me at times, just because it didn't end up being my preferred reading style. Overall, it is a really good start to the series and has definite potential.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2018For a first book attempt I am stunned by the professional and polished product that has been presented.
The story is a very individual one, different in content and style to a lot on the market. A very refreshing change and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I believe the blurb should cover the basic concepts of the tale, six stones, with six different elemental enhancements for those selected to weild the stone's magical ability, fighting a dark foe that has evil intent for the kingdom.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2018Awakening (The Elemental Chronicles Book 1) by [Kingston, Ross]Awakening is the first book of The Elemental Chronicles. In this book, in the shadows, the elements have picked who they want as their champions and the Vassals awake.
One Vassal is Alicea. She leaves her kingdom to come to the call. Along with a thief, they take a stand against the darkness and prepare for the war that is going to come.
From the beginning I was enthralled with this story. It is a perfect lead-in to the next book in the series as it left me wanting to read more.
Excellent job. I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2018I was very intrigued about this book from the beginning. It is the best magical fantasy book I have read in a while. It is expertly written to draw and capture the readers natural curiosity. I don't want to spoil anything for the next reader so what I can tell you is, it is about a Thief, a beautiful princess, and beautiful stones, looking for a talented person to yield their power, and cause change. It all has to do with the 6 elements of the magical world. It's a fabulous book and I can't wait for number 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing start to a series
Just finished this for the second time and im wildly impressed.
Right from the prologue, I found it hard to put down. The characters are compelling and written with strengths and flaws to all of them. The rich world and vivid setting makes me want to see more of it as well. I was particularly taken with the game of "Elemental Chronicles" and can't wait to see what more comes of it.
The plot pieces are set up nicely for a (hopefully) long series, and the fast pace makes for easy reading.
Awesome start to the series, can't wait for the next book to be released.
