About the authors
Frank Parker's writing has been likened to that of Laurie Lee, Ian McEwan and Charles Dickens. Not bad for a septuagenarian who came to writing late in life.
His most recent work, due to be published in Summer 2020, is a historical novel based on a real life, that of Arthur Kennedy. Appointed Poor Law Inspector in Kilrush, County Clare, towards the end of 1847, Kennedy exposed the practice of mass evictions carried out by wealthy landlords.
Frank is a retired Engineer. He was born close to the border between England and Wales and lived and worked in Coventry, North East Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. His work also took him to both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic and to South Africa. Since retiring he has lived in County Laois in the Republic of Ireland where he paints, writes and gardens.
His first novel, "Honest Hearts", was written after reading about a Laois born man who became a gold miner in the Klondike and Alaska. Frank researched various aspects of life in North America at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in order to provide authentic settings and experiences for his principal characters.
His second novel, "Summer Day", is set in 1947 in a small rural community, similar to that in which he grew up. It follows a small boy and his dog as they try to evade family members and others seeking him following a tragic accident.
"Strongbow's Wife" follows the events of the Norman occupation of Ireland in the latter part of the 12th century as seen through the eyes of the young woman given in marriage in return for Strongbow's leadership of the invasion.
"Transgression" deals with the changes in attitudes to sex and sexuality in Great Britain over the past 70 years and features a member of the British Parliament terrified his secret liaison with a young woman 40 years ago will be revealed.
In non-fiction, "A Purgatory of Misery" is an attempt to explain the historical, cultural and social context for the Irish famine of the mid-nineteenth century.

Joanne Larner was born in London and moved to Rayleigh in Essex (UK) in 2001. She has wanted to write a novel since the age of thirteen and finally managed it in 2015. She was helped by two things: National Novel Writing Month and Richard III. Richard was her inspiration and she became fascinated by him when she saw the Channel 4 documentary 'The King in the Car Park' in February 2013. She researched his life and times and read countless novels, but became fed up because they all ended the same way - with his death at the Battle of Bosworth.
So she decided to write a different type of Richard story and added a time travel element. The rest is (literally) history. She found his character seemed to write itself and with NaNoWriMo giving her the impetus to actually DO it, she succeeded.
Then came two sequels, making 'Richard Liveth Yet' a trilogy - a kind of 'Back to the Future' with Richard III!
She was asked by Susan Lamb, another Ricardian author, to collaborate on a humorous book about Richard, 'Dickon's Diaries', where Richard (aka Dickon) narrates in Olde Englishe the escapades of his household at his castle of 'Muddleham'. You can see the type of humour used on our Facebook page, Dickon for his Dames: https://www.facebook.com/Dickiethird/
In 2017 one of her Ricardian short stories was accepted for inclusion in an anthology of scary stories edited by Dan Alatorre: The Box Under the Bed
I have been writing creatively since 2006 when at a summer school with my family I wrote a short radio play. That led to a novel, some more courses, more novels, each better than the last until I took an MA at Sheffield Hallam. I published my first novel in 2014 - Dead Flies and Sherry Trifle. In 2015 a second followed - My Father and Other Liars. In 2016 I have an anthology of short stories out, Life, in a Grain of Sand. I have now added ‘memoir’ to my list of genres with the launch of Apprenticed To My Mother. Other novels can be found here. I write in a range of genres so there is something for everyone..
Before writing, I was a lawyer, ending up at the London Olympics. Now I mix writing with a range of activities, often walking to find inspiration or taking in a variety of sports events. I blog at Tangental - https://geofflepard.com/ and you can find more of my writing and poetry there.
I love writing, it`s my passion. My genres include fantasy, horror, urban fantasy, and a mixture of all those. I love telling stories;period. I am married to my wonderful wife, who is my rock. Our daughter and our dog, german shepherd collie cross, are also my passions. To experience a moment of pure love is to experience the world.
Creativity is something I couldn`t live without.
I am also a Supernatural geek, and love my music. Punk, Goth, Rockabilly and visual Kei music from Japan.
The paranormal is my normal.
oh, and I also totally believe in faeries.

My name is Ellen Best, I live in East Anglia Suffolk, in the UK. With my wonderful husband John and the lovely Lilly, our Romanian rescue dog. I have been writing since I could read. I began with poetry and had my first poem published at twelve in a magazine under a pen name. But in 2012 I took early retirement to improve my craft and concentrate on writing.
I took part in NaNoWriMo in 2014 and successfully completed the challenge. 2015 saw my flash printed in Canadian magazine a long story short.
Flash fiction, gave me my first competition success as I claimed first prize at the UK blog award story in 2017, 2018 my first horror story was printed in an Anthology Dark Visions 2019 The association of retired police Officers included a story by me in a pamphlet to celebrate their centenary. 2019 saw the inclusion of a psychological thriller of mine between the pages of another Anthology Nightmareland.
2020 has been a strange year and I have been working on my debut novel which fingers crossed will be picked up by an agent and publishing house very soon. It is a contemporary historic novel set in the 1970s. A story of Shame, as 10yr old Mary is ripped from her parents, A tale of pain and fear ensues as they fight to get her back. All because of an anonymous letter.
The Fourth Anthology is ready to pre-order on Amazon called Spellbound a Horror Anthology. By Dan Alatorre and nineteen other Authors. I am proud to have a place between the pages of this book.
Nick Vossen was raised on blockbuster films from the 80s and 90s as well as fantasy and sci-fi novels, comics and games. No matter the medium, his love for storytelling grew ever larger. Having always had a fascination with the fantastical and weird, he quickly grew fond of authors such as Terry Pratchett, H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman and many more. During the winter of 2017 Nick released an anthology of short, weird fiction entitled The Fissures Between Worlds, which delves into the strange places on Earth where time does not flow as it should. It was received quite favourably, and so Nick’s desire to tell more stories grew. He has since been privileged to appear in several other anthologies, magazines and short story compilations and has quite a few projects still in the works. His biggest fascinations and inspirations are old forgotten woodlands, the deepest depths of the oceans and the unsettling, uncanniness of retro futurism.
Nick graduated in Media- and Culture studies at Utrecht University in The Netherlands. He is currently working as a freelance creative writer and author. He also frequently works on projects in the Dutch indie-film industry, putting his talents to use in art-direction, set-dressing and of course screenwriting. His first novel, The Swansong Conspiracy (book 1 of the Eldritch Twins series) was released at the end of 2020 by Parliament House Press and is well received. The book series offers a unique blend of coming-of-age comedy, supernatural horror and mystery.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020Like some of the other reviewers, I started this book intending to just read and comment on the stories submitted by Dan Alatorre, as he had given me a Beta copy to read and check for errors. Although this genre is not my "go to" choice when looking for a new book, I have loved everything that I have read that Alarorre has written. So, I agreed to read at least his submissions and comment on them
That went out the window as soon as I finished 2 of the stories he wrote. I decided i would just read "a couple" of the other stories to see what i thought. Of course, I read them all! These are well-written short stories and they all fit well with the book's title.
The more I read, the more I was reminded that I used to read lots in this genre. I was reminded of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories and poems when reading some in this book. Other stories made me recall reading Alfred Hitchcock, having also watched his television show and most, if not all, of his movies. Still other stories in Spellbound reminded me of all of the Stephen King books I have read through the years. I think that the stories in Spellbound could easily hold their own in comparison with many famous authors' horror sfories.
These are not stories that will necessarily give you nightmares. But, you will get a shiver reading many of them.
I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2025A wonderfully scary collection of authors and stories. There are many stories I enjoyed consisting of authors I was familiar with and some new ones. Here are a few examples, “I watched as his arm changed into a wing, large as an angel’s, black as onyx. The other followed, and he transformed into a grotesque thing, unnatural and twofold. Half man, half swan.”—The Most Valuable Skill by Christine Valentor. “I woke to the sound of my own shrill screaming. The same nightmare, the one that constantly haunted my dreams when the climate control was out, now entrenched the strange images in my head. I was staring out a window, unable to breathe, as my parents’ bodies drifted through the cold, dark space.”— Holly and George by MD Walker. “Today was the day. In all technicality, it would be tonight, but that didn’t matter. It had been a month since the last time. The Beast was clawing at the walls to be free once more. It would get its way tonight. It would only have to be patient, twelve more hours. I would bide our time until then.”—The Killer Wolf by Alana Turner. “Some one comes. Yes, yes. No, not mistress. She is gone. I told you she is beyond our reach. Be quiet! They come. They will see us. Back. Back.”—Mirror by Adele Marie Park. Here’s the one that still haunts me with its stark reality, “The emperor’s main advisor, the High Priest of the capital city of Cusco, addressed the deity. ‘The mountain gods are angry and need to be appeased before they will send rain and restore life to our crops. A Capacocha ceremony is necessary. You must advise the chiefs to bring their sacrificial offering to the city at once and I will arrange their distribution through the empire. I will lead the ceremony at which the purest and most beautiful children will be offered.’” —Death is About Choices by Roberta Eaton Cheadle. This is a good anthology for those who enjoy short horror stories where you get sixteen different styles presented to you.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2021Spellbound gives you 27 different stories that many captivate and leave you wanting more and others were just, meh. But to get all of these together in one book makes it a great deal.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2021I agree with everyone that left a good review. I love horror stories, my husband things I’m sick. I enjoyed every one of the stories in this book. Do not hesitate to buy this book. It is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Scares
The stories in Spellbound are all fantastically written. Each one takes us on a different journey, some over the rainbow, some deep into the woods and even up a high mountain which is not what it seems. This collection shows the talent and imagination which are out there in the minds of independent authors and I look forward to reading more from these authors. Fantastic read and I would recommend this highly.
