Leaving Hope (Golden Terrace Colony Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

If Anya doesn't marry the guy her parents choose, this generation will be the last with pure Euros.

She can live with that.

They might not let her.

The trouble is, that guy (the one Anya’s parents like) wants to be ship captain. That means staying on
Hope. When there’s a new world within reach, waiting to be explored…

Anya doesn’t know if she’s smart enough or strong enough to be part of the colony team that will get the planet ready for humans to live there. But she's sure creating a new world will be as exciting as molding light sculptures.

Two activities her parents despise almost as much as they despise her talking with anyone other than “that guy.”

Yeah, Anya’s life stinks.

But her parents are powerful. And her father’s sometimes violent.

Which is probably why Anya hates conflict. Maybe she should just go along with her parents’ plans…

And be stuck, friendless, living other people’s dreams.

But what’s the alternative?

"Leaving Hope lends a warm comparison to The Little Mermaid, but in space; a girl who has dreams and aspirations beyond her position, going against her father's wishes." --Dr Who Online

About the Author

R. L. S. Hoff is a writer of mostly young adult sci-fi and fantasy. She lives in a multi-cultural household where she often has to remind one child that he must learn English because it's important for life in the US and the other two children that they must learn Mandarin because it is and always will be their brother's native language. R. L.S. Hoff and her family feel lucky to live within view of the Rocky Mountains. However, instead of hiking with her husband, kids, and dog,as any reasonable person who lived in such a gorgeous place would, Hoff enjoys the panorama mostly from her car and her upstairs windows. When she's not writing or working at (so far) more profitable gigs, R.L.S.Hoff enjoys reading, gardening, and baking bread.

R. L. S. Hoff is a life-long book lover who grew up as a modern nomad, with roots in five states. Once she graduated college, she took her travels abroad. After about a decade living in China, she has now settled in Colorado with her three kids (one adopted, two bio), her dog, and her spectacularly supportive and brilliant husband.

She writes mostly young adult science-fiction and fantasy. When she's not writing, editing, tutoring, or parenting, she hangs out with friends from church or dabbles in gardening and baking. Her favorite thing to grow is rhubarb, and her favorite thing to bake is kringle. Her favorite stories (to read and to write) have strong female characters and amazing new worlds to explore.

Anya is a pure blood euro who’s family has illegally betrothed her to a green of their choosing. She is a quiet rebel at 15 1/2 and only wants to leave hope to go ahead to colonize the planet they are all going to land on eventually. She wants to be in the 1 st group and done everything she can to be ready. Her betrothed wants nothing to do with colonization. She has some heavy choices to make in a big hurry. Choices that can change the colony and the Hope. Is she big enough to make them ,strong enough to follow the pain that comes with growing up and making adult choices. If I could I would give this book ten stars. It is riveting.

This author has written a chewy sci-fi story of young aspirations. Anya hopes to create her own life amid uncertainty and pressure to conform. The main character, Anastasia Cartier (Anya), tries, really tries to do what is expected of her by her influential family but finds no simple way to openly rebel against her betrothal, arranged for political gains. As she seeks ways that would enable her to join an advance exploration team to a distant planet, she learns to use all her skill and wiles to keep negotiating for her own goals, without alienating herself, or eliminating her from the competition. A fine book from an accomplished story-teller.

I am an avid reader, and am always looking for new authors and new stories. This book introduces us to a new world, in the future far from today and we meet Anya and see her grow as a woman. I had trouble putting the book down, even when reading it the second time! And I can’t wait to read more about Anya and the new colony. I highly recommend!

I had a hard time getting into this book, but I am so glad i did. This book turned into a riveting story about a young girl trying to make her way onto a team going to a colony on a planet after being on a ship for years. It was interesting to see how life on the ship Hope was described and even more interesting to read about the tests she had to undergo to try out for the colony team. I was halfway through the book and I couldn't put it down wanting to see how it turned out. I was very happy that even though this was just book one that there was a real ending with no loose strings. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I would have given it 4.5 stars had they given me the option to.

I found the characters engaging and the science fiction understandable and relatable. Although this is the first of a series, it has some satisfying closure in the plot. I would read book 2.

Admittedly, it was a bit hard for me to get into this book. Anya doesn't make for the best narrator because her thought process is a bit scattered and it's hard to follow at times. On top of that, the story starts off slow. Was almost a DNF for me, but I decided to see it through to the end.

I'm actually glad I did because it got better the further along (as though the author hit their stride). Anya becomes more quirky than annoying, and I actually do think the author did an excellent job with worldbuilding. I might be back to check out book two at some point.

Leaving Hope is an amazing and wonderful Sci-Fi world set far in the future! We are taken on a journey alongside Anya who is doing everything in her power to not only grow into an amazing woman, but to earn her place on the group that will be sent down to recolonize Earth. It is filled with romance, hardships, friendships and so much more. I had trouble putting this book down once I started it!

I am honestly dumbfounded on how this book has not received more buzz since it's release! I am DYING to know what happens next, and literally can't thing of anything I disliked about the story. The main characters had amazing character development to where I felt like I understood why they were doing things the way they did. The only exception on character background was her parents, whom I am interested in seeing if the author dives more into detail on why they act they way they do (you'll understand once you read it as I don't want to spoil).

Overall, this was an amazing read that I can't stop gushing about! I can't wait to read what comes next in this journey!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!
