A J Saunders is two friends writing under one name. Pat loves reading – Jo loves writing. We met at work and hit it off immediately. Our bond for reading and writing brought us to create our books. Looking for storylines and characteristics we wanted to read, but couldn’t find, we decided to write our own.
We both live in the Loire Valley in France where we meet up regularly to continue our writing journey.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2024I am a big fan of the author and have enjoyed several of her books. This one is the best yet! A page-turner I thought I had figured out only to change directions several times. I have read others that explore special familial relationships and connections, but this one is unique and creative, going places others have not. The writing style is engaging, the storyline is rich with feel and texture. I won't provide a spoiler, but I implore you to read this book! Kaylee, Abby, Alex and the supporting cast are characters you will love getting to know. This roller coaster of a read (ride) includes corkscrews, sudden stops, and directional changes that leave you breathless and perfectly willing to go again and ask to be in the first car.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2025Oh my! I found this paranormal thriller unputdownable. Adley J Saunders blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural with atmospheric writing that explores familial bonds and grief as Kaylee struggles to understand her twin sister Abby’s mysterious disappearance.
Saunders brings the characters' struggles to life, making every shadow, whisper, and fleeting glimpse of Abby tangible. Another narrative twist increases the suspense as you think you’ve figured it out.
The magpies add an eerie symbology to thought-provoking questions about memory, trauma, and the nature of belief. However, the jaw-dropping ending lifts this supernatural mystery into a conclusion that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about the story.
The Whispering Magpies is a haunting, unforgettable novel. Read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2021The Whispering Magpies, by A J Saunders ending, was a surprise like the Thomas Covenant series. With that said, I found the description well done. The story flowed naturally. It had some great suspense. I wanted to know more until the last chapter.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2024I enjoyed reading this book. From the start I was hooked. The wording was wonderful and the storyline kept me coming back. The genre of the book was one of my favorites. I love crime, mystery, thrillers. My favorite part about this book was it took me almost the whole story to figure out the twist. I usually figure the twist out at the halfway point. However this book kept me guessing until the last 13 pages.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is there was a few spelling errors in names.
Definitely a recommended read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024This is the best book that I've read in a while!! It really drew me in in the beginning, and I couldn't turn pages fast enough. Kaylee has an uncanny connection with her twin Abby, who has been missing for 2 months. Kaylee tells Alex, her boyfriend, that Abby comes to visit her; and Kaylee is the only one who can see her. Is she a ghost, or is she real and in need of rescue?? Together, Alex and Kaylee, try to find out what happened to Abby. An ending that I never saw coming, still can't wrap my head around it. Amazing book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2022I really enjoyed this story of twin sisters, Abby and Kaylee. I'm not generally a fan of supernatural or ghost stories, but this was so much more. The relationship between twins is special, so I can understand how Kaylee was the only one who could see or interact with Abby. The author added mystery and intrigue to the story, and the surprise ending was satisfying. It was well written and easy to read. Overall, A really good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020The characters are believable and the story flows well. A page turner as the mystery unravels with a few twists and turns.
Easy to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2023Clear your schedule. Once you start reading this action-packed paranormal thriller you will not want to put it down. The reader hears from coma-bound and missing Abby throughout the novel as her twin sister works feverishly to find her and solve the mystery of who attacked her. There are subplots that add to the suspense. The book takes an immersive approach placing the crime victim into the investigation via her paranormal appearances and communications with her sister in spirit form. The story played out in such a way that I did not know who to trust throughout the plot and the ending took me completely by surprise. This is not an ending with a twist; it’s a roundoff double backflip!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love loved it
The writing is so exquisite that it almost seemed like I was witnessing a work of art unfolding before me. A.J. Saunders' characters are so well-developed and believable that I almost felt like I was a part of the story. I was so absorbed by the unpredictable atmosphere that I couldn't help but be drawn in. The language was clear and descriptive, and I found myself enthralled by the story and deeply invested in the outcome - it was like I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling paranormal thriller
The first thing that struck me about The Whispering Magpies was the sense of atmosphere: on the surface it is an ordinary world full of ordinary people, but the way the world is conveyed really fits the mood, making it full of darkness and fear. This, I think, was down to a clever combination of a strong opening segment, dark and terrible themes, and a strong emphasis on the emotions of Kaylee and her family, and this is what made me really enjoy this book.
Whilst the story may be told from Kaylee’s perspective, you get to really understand the misery of her family following the disappearance of Abby. In particular, I felt for her mother and her father, who desperately try to rationalise and understand their daughter’s appearance, but after time has gone on, even they are starting to feel the strain of defeat. Through the clever use of first-person, we even get snippets of the missing girl Abby herself, and listen to her internalised thoughts and worries as she tries to fill in the gaps of her memory. These were the stand-out segments of the book - her experiences and thoughts evoked a real sense of fear and really chilled me.
The paranormal elements of this book were excellent, starting off slow and then really ramping up as the story progressed. My only criticism was that the earlier ones were fairly standard for the genre (a sighting here, a dream there etc.) but as we learn more about Abby we start to see the author’s imagination really come into her own. I also liked the introductions of characters - each one was introduced slowly and gave me time to really suss them out, and by the mid-point of the book I was suspicious of everyone. This created the question in my mind that I needed an answer to, and is what really kept me ploughing through this book.
The Whispering Magpies by Adley Saunders is a riveting read for young adults and fans of the paranormal. I really could not recommended it enough. I feel I have found a real gem here that many more people should read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A touching story
The story follow Kaylee as she tries to find her missing twin sister Abby. The beginning is a little slow but the story picks pace as we move along. The ending will haunt for a while after you finish reading. A good read. Definitely go for this book.

A nice palette of characters where each person could be the suspect. And that last chapter. No one could imagine that!! And I mean NO ONE.
For days after, I still couldn’t stop thinking about that last chapter. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a bit like ‘The Sixth Sense.’
I enjoyed following Kaylee and Alex in their mission to discover who was Abby’s attacker, and I would definitely recommend this book
