The monsters never rest. They lurk, waiting for me to go to sleep.

Already, I have lost everything in my fight with the monsters that haunt my dreams, but my nightmares become a reality when I am kidnapped by a shadowy government agency called the IDA.

Drafted into the IDA’s army of dreamers, the monsters become more real than they have ever been before. I am beginning to learn who, or what, I am—and the responsibility it brings with it.

It’s a fight between good and evil on a plane between worlds. We learn to shift into the warriors we need to be to slay the demons of the underworld. Everything rests on our shoulders.

This is a fight we cannot lose because if we lose, we lose EVERYTHING.

If you enjoyed Ready Player One, Assassin’s Creed, and The Mortal Instruments, then you don’t want to miss this haunting paranormal urban fantasy.

Dreams. Some would say it’s the nightly escape from the ordinary routine of the day. Almost like a door to another life for a brief time. What is seen amounts to nothing more than pieces of our reality from the day, splashed with memories from the past, tinged with hidden fears we attempt to bury, and mixed with hopes rising to the surface for the future. Somehow the mind tries to order it all into some coherent story to play out in an overnight drama. However, sometimes dreams are something much more powerful, more real than could be imagined. At least for Darren Marshall they are. His dreams leave him exhausted because each night is a new battle to be waged. When a strange agency takes an interest in him and his dreams, a bad situation turns worse. The creatures from his dreams seem to take on a new life, one where they’re no longer satisfied to terrorize only one’s dreamstate. With Darren leading the charge, the dreamers will wage a war on never before imagined battlefields against hideous creatures that are what nightmares are created. We’re taken on an action-packed, heart-pounding adrenalin rush a moment at a time by Cox as each battle leads us to the ultimate showdown. There’s comfort though because one can wake up from a dream, right? Unfortunately, some dreams don’t play by those rules, and waking up is when the true nightmare starts.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this up, but I've really enjoyed Toni Cox as an author in the past, so thought I'd give it a try. Even if I had had any preconceptions of what I'd be reading, I probably would have been wrong! The story starts off quite generically: a young man, suffering from bad dreams, who needs to move in with his parents because he's unable to hold down a steady job or really care for himself. Then, suddenly, it feels like we're in a "Men in Black" movie and he's being whisked off to secret bunkers. And from there, the pace really picks up. What I really enjoyed about this story is that every time I thought I knew what was going on or why things were happening (or thought things were feeling familiar), I was wrong! Ultimately, it's a good vs evil story played out in the dreamscape - and it eventually spills over into the world - and it turns out that it's not only things that were not as they seemed, but people too.

Pick this up if you're looking for action, twists, and a creative storyline that will surprise you. If you're after multi-layered characters and deep, meaningful relationships or lots of romance, then you probably want to give it a miss.

This was an interesting premise and I liked it. I felt the book could have developed the characters a bit more. It starts off throwing the reader into the action and keeps it coming. There were some good twists and surprises in the story.

What can be said about a Cox book that hasn't been said before?

I was so glad to pull myself out of a reading slump with an urban fantasy story that made me want to hunt her down, steal her characters and keep them safe in my pocket.

Cox has this uncanny ability to really tap into your emotions and make you feel what the character is feeling. Keep you on the edge of your seat, her plot twists are on point and leave me gasping at one in the morning as I finish "one more chapter."

Ranking as one of my favourite authors, Cox weaves magic through all her tales and I have yet to encounter a book of hers that I do not enjoy.

Dreamstate is a highly underappreciated book that deserves way more than five stars.

I liked this story with its off beat premise and mix of mystery, oddness and a dash of a roll playing game without the rolling stats update that are usually included in the story. It has a simple yet complex idea where dreamers fight demons but adds in the mystery as to why people Dream. It was really hard to put down as the main character comes in and whips everyone together as they all try to figure out what is really going on. Just a good story that was both interesting and entertaining at the same time. The battles were fun and easy to picture.

Dreamstate is one of those stories that for me is very difficult to pigeonhole into a single genre. In fact, had reading a Review Copy not been suggested by an author whose books I’ve really enjoyed I might have missed this story. I’m so glad I took the opportunity to get a review copy through Booksprout because this story was very entertaining. From the start following Darren’s story was fascinating and the action that is woven throughout the story line certainty keeps you on the edge of your chair. I would love to see this turned into a short series to follow these characters on a few more adventures.
