- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2017Historical fiction done right. Home of the Brave covers a period of Naval History often overlooked. Prouty did his research and did a good job of weaving hard historical facts with a fictional narrative that tells a wonderful coming of age story. Home of the Brave is the kind of book that should be in every history teacher’s class room. Historical Fiction is a great way to get young adults interested in history if even to try to challenge them to separate the fact from the fiction. Speaking of young adults, while this book is in no way geared towards the YA audience, it would work really well for a YA reader. I mention this because even in YA novels there are many things today’s “adults” might find objectionable. While this novel does have violent scenes and touches on the issue of slavery, Prouty does a good job of keeping everything PG-13, if not PG. Don’t worry even though this is a naval novel it is not watered down. Prouty was able to write and engaging and exciting novel with very little if any profanity. Even if you are not drawn to Historical Fiction or are not a fan of Naval History, the coming of age story might be just what you need. Minus younger readers, I feel like this book has wide appeal for a wide range of readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2020Well written, minus a few typos and typesetting errors, of the period between the revolutionary war and the war of 1812 and a young man coming of age in the young naval service of the United States.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2019A sweet pleasant nautical novel geared toward adolescent males. The author took a few moments of history , may have read some sailing stories coming up with this publication.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019This was a very satisfying read. The author does not go into great detail, but tells the story of a boy becoming a man in the first few years of the U.S. Navy. No great sea battles, but the daily routine of an armed schooner battling French and Barbary pirates. The main character, a young cabin boy named Clyde, reveals his fears, yearning for "his girl back home", and his learning lessons of life at sea and growing into a fine young midshipman. He makes several references to his growing Christian faith, but is done matter-of-fact, and
doesn't preach. Dear friends are lost, and others are made. Very little profanity, and even that is mild. Battle scenes are vivid, but not gory. I really enjoyed reading, and would not hesitate to recommend it to my teenaged grandkids.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2019This one was full of action adventure, but seemed to have that "feel good" story about it. I will read the next story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2017Dave Prouty knocks it out of the park with Home of the Brave. Based on historical events and characters, Home of the Brave is crafted in the 1700s, as a fledgling US Navy is quickly evolving into a powerful fighting force. Dave very keenly weaves thrilling sea battles, interesting and courageous characters and even a bit of youthful romance into a fascinating tale. The book is a real page turner- I just didn't want to put it down. Can easily see this story morph into a Master and Commander level movie. Outstanding work Dave! Bring on another one!
