BLINDSIDED
SoCal natives, Nate and Cody have been friends since childhood. Both knew they were different—and the same. At seventeen, a stolen weekend in the Florida Keys drove their connection deeper and hotter than either could imagine. They were meant to be together. Then, for reasons only Nate knows, suddenly they weren’t.
They’re still friends. Best friends. But they’ve moved on and found other partners. The yearning remains, however, despite the long-ago secret that drove them apart, and when tragedy strikes, both men find themselves in the dark. They must grope their way back to who and what they are...which they will find in each other’s arms. Sometimes, losing one’s sight can open one’s eyes—and heart.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2017What would you do if you suddenly lost your sight? This is what happens to Nate but it affects him so much more because he is a sculptor with rapidly rising fame. His current boyfriend is a model and he does do his shallow, minimal best to deal with a man who has to learn a new way to live his life. Fortunately, Nate's best friend since childhood, Cody, is right there by his side, giving his loyal support and encouragement. Despite a brief teenage liaison, that ended almost as quickly as it began, they've maintained a strong friendship.
Susan Mac Nicol has done a stellar job of depicting a man struggling to regain his sense of self-worth. She developed a somewhat similar theme in [book:Love You Senseless|23350137], so I was confident of a well researched experience. It's not a depressing story, in spite of the tragedy. Nate does move forward with learning the skills he needs but has little faith that he can practice his art. Much of the book follows his recovery, his struggle to overcome doubts about ever being independent, and dealing with additional personal and emotional troubles. He doesn't wallow in it or throw pity parties, so the story develops an uplifting storyline.
Cody is a marvelous character, who has his own burdens to bear where Nate is concerned. He owns an art gallery and with that expertise, as well as knowing Nate for so long, believes he can eventually return to creating his art. It's an uphill battle at times but Cody has such a positive outlook and patient disposition. The secondary characters are done well, including Suzanne (hmm, wonder where that name came from), Nate's therapist/trainer for the blind. I like having a strong, positive female representation in a MM book. There's also Dev and Blu, who have less predominant roles but still add needed elements. Unfortunately there's also homophobic parents creating heartbreak and trouble.
The story is also far less steamy than most of Susan's books. It detracts nothing from the story and I honestly didn't miss extra scenes. It did have lots of love and warmth with wonderfully developing friendships. I can recommend this for lovers of second chances and hurt/comfort.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017Nate, an artist, is blinded due to an accident. His best friend Cody swoops to help and support him, while Nate’s shallow and vain boyfriend, leaves when the going get rough. Nate is unsure if his life will ever be the same, while Cody tries to convince him that he can do anything he wants. Their strong friendship covers over one glaring secret, they are in love with each other but are afraid to show it in case the other doesn’t feel the same way. These feelings are no secret to their friends, who have figured out just what the two of them mean to each other, even if they can’t see it themselves. Eventually, their feelings and the secrets behind them are finally expressed.
‘Sight Unseen’ is one of those rare stories that transcend the characters portrayed in them. The two main characters, Cody and Nate, are two young men flawed by their pasts, unsure of themselves and the people around them. More importantly, for much of the book, they deny the feelings they’ve had for each other for the last twelve years, and the secrets that have kept them apart. This book, while a M/M romance, could work well in any type of romance fiction. The story is universal: a friend in trouble and the best friend coming to help steer him (or her) through the rough patches, both harboring feelings for the other but unable or afraid to express them, until the truth comes out and they wonder what took them so long. A must read for anyone who is a romantic at heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2021This book is about journeys and people who are in our lives forever, even if they paths diverge and meth up over and over again. Not just a romance, but a love story between two individuals who were always meant to be together.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017First serious kudos for the accuracy of the storyline. The research was clear throughout the story. Having said that this is also where the story fell flat for me.
Nate and Cody are incredible, for all intents and purposes an old married couple. But they’re not a couple, though both really want the other.
Their story is a popular trope, best friends, unrequited love, with a small twist. When tragedy occurs and Nate shuts down, Cody is there to help.
Of course we have shallow crappy boyfriend we have to get rid of and boy does he make it easy. Then the two MCs have to actually TALK about what they feel.
The sight loss was almost a small side story. Once Nate pulled his big boy pants up everything just flowed for him. Having no financial concern made it possible for him to have the luxury to sulk as well as having all of the assistive options within his reach.
The reason the two of them were pulled/torn apart was just bleh. Nate’s family is a typical “evil” rich family, their interactions with Nate were horrible. The belief that Nate was still so concerned with their opinion of/power over him was a stretch.
Cody and Nate are sweet together and so much humor, their HEA is one I enjoyed reading. Not a life changer for me, but definitely brought me some laughs and smiles.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2024I'm rounding this up from 3.5. I enjoyed reading the overall story but there were a few things that didn't work well for me.
I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2017Loved, just loved this.
Loved the language, loved the story, and loved the way life goes on, only differently.
So happy to see that there were no quick fixes, and no miraculous come backs, only a hard-earned struggle to make life work again.
Kudos, author, you did a great job. We need more books like this one.
Simply loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS BOOK..
Wow.. This Fantastic. I loved this book, Ms Susan and Nicholas has done it proud especially with the research going into this. This book is a best friends to lovers story. Imagine loving someone for so long knowing all you'll ever be is a friend well except a hot weekend when they where 17. Nate and Cody certainly pulled my heart strings.
Nate awakes remembering nothing to what happened with everything in blackness and he starts to panic. All he wants are Jon his boyfriend and his best friend, Cody with him to tell him everything is okay.
Nate wakes for a second time with Jon and a Doctor telling him he'd been in an accident involving a hit and run driver while he was out jogging. The bad news of not being able to see hits Nate hard. Nate's a passionate sculpture artist and as long he has Jon and Cody with him he'd be okay.
Jon had been with him for a year and where living together. Cody rushes back from his art gallery when he hears to news of his friend. Cody has been in love with Nate since they where 17 and seeing Nate again he knows he his to be tough to hide his feelings again.. This book is highly recommended for your library its a MUST..

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing story of life, love and overcoming adversity
This was a wonderful story, taking a challenging situation where someone loses their sight and feels like their world is crashing down around them, and making it into a totally heartwarming story.
We get to experience the highs and lows with Nate as he struggles to accept the fact his world has been plunged into darkness, and there is only the faintest of lights shining in the distance, his oldest friend, Cody.
The problem is after a wonderful weekend together in their teens, they both have tried so hard to hide away just how much they still feel for each other. Moving on their lives, neither wanting to admit to the other the feelings which run so deep they are almost afraid to admit them.
Nate struggles to come to terms with his new life, and soon finds that he is facing losing more than his sight as his narcissistic partner Jon, who cannot cope with the fact that he isn’t the beginning and end of Nates world.
As his life falls apart again, the one person who is there for him, throughout everything is Cody, but even before losing his sight, Nate couldn’t see what was right there before him. It takes this drastic change in his life for him to ‘see’ what was right before him.
The connection and love between these two is intense and palpable, it reaches out from the pages and pulls you right inside their world. Cody is the man you wish would turn up on a white charger, or maybe a surfboard, and sweep you off your feet. The moment I realised he had feelings for Nate, which was pretty early on, I was rooting for him. I wanted to pull out my pompoms and cheer him on to get his man.
For Nate not to totally lose who he is in a bout of deprecating self pity was amazing. It would’ve been the easy route to take, but knowing the author, I knew she wouldn’t take the easy route. What this brought us was a wonderfully dynamic character.
As always, the way their world is described you feel like you are there with them, experiencing their lives and living it with them.
With all Susan’s books I form emotional attachments to the characters, they are more than just me on a page, they feel like real people, and that’s a testament to the skills of the author.
Honestly, this book was everything I wanted to read, it had wonderful men, a great storyline which engaged me from the start and let’s not forget the hot sexing. Nothing was overdone, it was all perfectly balanced. It would’ve been easy to go for the obvious clichés with a story centered around a blind main character, but the subject matter, for me, was handled brilliantly.
I am being greedy here, but I would love to hear more from Nate and Cody, to get a glimpse into the future with them. If it happens, I’ll be there, if not, then I was honoured to have followed them this far on their journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A epic lovestory from a wonderful author!
How would you feel if waking up to a nightmare of never ending darkness, scared and alone. The best days of your relationship long gone, at the mercy of a uncaring, self centered boyfriend, who just won't see you as the man you once were. Abandoned 12 years ago for being gay, by the people where would have been supposed to love you the most. The only man never leaving your side, being your rock and light in all the dark, your best friend since childhood days. If there just wouldn't be the big elefant in the room that could destroy everything even more....
That's exactly how Sight Unseen begins, a epic love story about two men, both are suffering from decision made 12 years ago. This book also is a lot about second chances, second chances in life and love. The other day I've seen a question asked from another author at facebook about second chances and wasn't to sure how to answer. Now, after reading this wonderful book I would say; when life and love are giving us second chances, who are we then to decline something that could lead to be the best thing of our life.
Susan Mac Nicol is one of the authors on my auto buy list, so I'm already familiar with her writing. This book had been different, though. Personally I think it's the best book she ever wrote and she's outdone herself. Not only had she to write from a blind, gay man's perspective, she also had to write in a complete different slang. Like I already said; for me the story itself had been epic and therefore I can't wait to see it hopefully soon on screen, with Nicolas Downs in the leading role.
Thank you Susan Mac Nicol, for this most wonderful book of yours, which I enjoyed reading emensly!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars – Love is being there when it counts!
“This isn’t the end of things. It’s only the beginning of something new.”
It’s a sad fact that when tragedy strikes we find out who our true friends are. Those that lift us up even when we are at our lowest and lend their strength to ours.
Nate and Cody have been best friends since forever. And Cody has been in love with Nate for almost the same length of time. Resigned to love him from afar, no matter the pain it causes him, there is nothing Cody wouldn’t do for Nate – nothing.
As Nate struggles to adapt to his new reality, Cody steps up to the plate to help in any way he can. I can’t even begin to imagine what Nate goes through mentally and emotionally being robbed of his sight. Yet, Cody’s belief in Nate is both the foundation on which he stands, and rails against:
“Believe in yourself, Nate. I do.”
After all this time, will Nate finally ‘see’ Cody?
I’ve read that when we lose one of our senses, our others become enhanced to compensate. I definitely felt that in the author’s writing of Nate. She really brought his world alive to me – colour even in the midst of his darkness.
I really wore my heart on my sleeve for this book. It was an emotional and heartfelt read. I cried, and yes, laughed my way through, such was my response to the author’s ability to pull me in and fall in love with these characters and their story.
“… love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.”
Isn’t it time we all took off our masks?
