Sniper!: A Natalie McMasters Mystery (The Natalie McMasters Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

A crazed sniper. A loved one wounded, in danger of death. The unforgiving Fake News media. And a hidden villain more loathsome than any that Natalie McMasters has encountered before.
Nattie’s in the crosshairs as a series of seemingly random shootings terrorizes the city. She must fight to keep her polyamorous family from disintegrating, her emotions from running wild and her personal integrity uncompromised. This would be a formidable task for anyone, much less a twentysomething college student who just wants to graduate and get on with her life. Nattie must rely on old friends and new, but how can she even, when friends can become enemies in the blink of an eye? As Nattie nears an emotional meltdown, society collapses along with her, as the sniper’s depredations take their toll on the city.
Sniper! is a twisted, sexy, absolutely gripping descent into darkness jam packed with nail-biting suspense. Don’t miss it!

Burns has come out with another taut, gripping mystery about Nattie McMasters, a young, attractive student/sleuth with a mixed up sexual identity and a heart full of passion and courage. This time Nattie runs afoul of the university, the media, the government, politicans and a murderous sniper who's stalking the city. No surprise--her hard-edged attitudes and freely expressed opinions land her in bureaucratic hot water. Reading the story I could feel my own blood boil as she confronts arbitrary regulations that attack her spirit, identity and personal freedoms. Readers will find themselves rooting for this protagonist who has to fight the system and her own demons because of who she is and her love of family. Exciting, fascinating and relevant, Sniper is a great read.

This is the second Natalie McMaster’s book I’ve read by Thomas A Burns. Both were the same. No, no, wait...I mean each was as good a read and as exciting as the other, not a replica of one another. Natalie McMasters is a Private Detective and a pre-law student. She’s an “in your face” kind of person and lives in what some might call an unusual living arrangement.
I like all of Burns characters. They each have his or her own place and are created to fit in a very difficult puzzle. This book deals a lot with people and their views on gun control as well as your normal crappy political games. Around all of it winds Burns story involving Natalie and her family.

This is a sort of gripping book with 2 plots. It makes you want to solve one while constantly wondering what is happening in the other. Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t a story that switches from one POV to another. It’s very clear just full of tension and suspense.

I must say there is one thing that began to make me yell at Natalie. Rather as if you’re sitting on the couch yelling at a football game on tv. I got tired of Natalie’s constant striking back at everyone. Sometimes in person; sometimes in her mind. It’s just that the subject seemed to go on and on. Sort of an “They started it” theme.

However, let me say something about all of this. An author who writes well enough to evoke enough emotion to get you yelling at the pages (or e-book) has a way with words, doesn’t he?
Waiting for the next Natalie McMasters book.

I enjoyed the change of scenery in the last few books, but Natalie McMasters is at her best on her home turf. Sniper! has everything we've come to expect from the series, with a "ripped from the headlines" feel that hits disturbingly close to home at times.

The settings may be familiar, but there are new enemies, and a new ally I really hope becomes a series regular. Not to spoil anything, but if you're a fan of 80's martial arts movies, you'll definitely want to check this one out.

The new installment of Nataly McMasters saga doesn't disappoint. Nattie's life is full of love, excitement and danger. After escaping from the couples retreat in Georgia, she settles down with her wife Lupe and her husband Danny to try and live peacefully as an unconventional family. What can go wrong? Everything! The author raises important issues of gun control, political corruption, and prejudice while delivering an interesting plot full of twists and turns that will keep readers spellbound from the first page to the last.

“You are not who you think you are.” Few of the characters in Thomas Burns’s latest, Sniper, are who we think they are. True, Natalie McMasters is back, along with her wife, Lupe, and her husband, Danny, but most of the characters have hidden agendas.

A relentless pace propels the reader on a trajectory of violence, terror, and betrayal. A sniper shoots up a gun buyback event at Natalie’s college campus and sends her on a path which could lead to physical and emotional destruction. Her friend and psychotherapist is shot before her eyes. Others are killed without any seeming pattern. The body count rises in a series of random attacks. Natalie turns to the wrong people for support, a move which leads her to a series of television interviews, each more damning that the previous one. Natalie takes on a self-imposed challenge to stop the sniper before she is next.

Tight plotting, strong, well-developed characters, and a pace which rarely subsides make this a read impossible to put down.

Is this a thriller, a drama about personal and relationship growth or a ripped from the headlines commentary on contentious issues? It does all three very well while playfully incoroprating classic tropes like the wise Asian master and villains of Moriarty quality. What ever your viewpoint on contemporary controversies Natalie will probably annoy you off as she combines a devotion to the second amendment with living in a loving bisexual throuple. And the action is very intense.

Another gripping psychological episode in the life of Natalie McMasters! Building on the previous stories, we get some resolution and some new tidbits. Sniper! is not for everyone but if you like well written characters and plots & stories that keep you turning pages (and usually guessing!) then it is for you. Thomas Burns hits on some hot point issues and does not disappoint Nattie's fans with this 5th installment in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb addition to the series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2020
With yet another line up of disparate characters, a plot in tune with reality, and a narrative delivered with absolute skill, Sniper without any doubt is the best so far in this series. The author touches on various issues, each one of current concern, while weaving a story to keep one guessing until the very end, but moreover leaving the reader stunned and gasping for breath. An excellent read, a superb addition to the popular Natalie McMasters series, and a series I for one, sincerely recommend

I loved this installment of the Natalie McMasters series. Dealing with real issues relating to firearms it was both harrowing and thrilling. Full of suspense I couldn't put it down. Natalie is a character full of courage and snark but even she was pushed to her limits in this story. A well written story full of surprises, thrills and many mixed emotions. A must read!
