The Golden Lion (Catalan Chronicles Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 747 ratings

‘Luca Baldi is an illiterate peasant, a scrawny wretch who has a seditious streak and who under normal circumstances would have been hanged or burnt at the stake long ago. However, fate, or God, has seen fit to smile on his miserable existence.’
And not only on Luca Baldi. After their stunning victory over the Romans, the Catalan mercenaries have become kings in the land of the enemy. Luca and his friends are enjoying the spoils of victory and basking in their new-found status. But dark clouds are gathering on the horizon and soon Luca, and the Catalan Company, will be sucked into the maelstrom of power politics. Old enemies with grievances to settle will target Luca himself and the Catalans will come up against a new foe – the daunting Empress Irene.
Fresh battles beckon for Luca, the Almogavars and the Catalan Company in ‘The Golden Lion’, the third volume in the Catalan Chronicles, the saga of a mercenary band that brought the Byzantine Empire to its knees at the beginning of the fourteenth century.

Historical fiction can be hard to get into as the overall plot is already fixed. This series is however very well written, with enough fictional characters to handle a fictional story within the overall events of history. The author does an incredible job of also describing how things were in the Byzantine empire at the time, and keeps the whole narration engaging. He does ascribe on rare occasions thoughts and philosophies unlikely to be indulged in by people at the time, especially peasants and illiterate soldiers. These comments are relevant to today’s stupidities, but overall, add to the book’s strengths given it is fiction.

Hope the next book is fun and not overly tragic; looking forward to it.

So well-written that you feel like you are transported back in time to the period. Excellent story-telling with richly developed characters. I cannot wait for the next installment! This is a page-turner and a do not miss! Highly recommend!
