Vella: Cupids & Cowboys Series Book 3 Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 134 ratings

In a town where independence is a dangerous dream, she dared to hope for more. Until three orphaned souls turned her quiet life upside down.

Vella Givens has never wanted what other ladies in Cutthroat desire: marriage and babies. She craves adventure, purpose - and opening her own school. But her dreams crumble when she discovers three orphaned children stealing to survive, targeted by greedy men bent on selling them off for profit. Vella knows she must protect them, though shielding runaways could ruin her reputation.

There's only one person who might understand: the new marshal, Baird McKiernan. Yet Baird is duty-bound to enforce the law, which would send the orphans back to misery. Vella resists trusting him with their secret, fearing his honor might prevail over compassion.

Little does she know Baird dreams of being a doctor, not a lawman. He respects Vella's independence and intelligence, drawn to the light that most Cutthroat ladies lack. Baird wants to aid the children as much as Vella, if only she'll give him her faith.

The orphans, Dewey, Jess and Nedra, have their own plans. They've chosen Baird and Vella to be their parents, and they'll matchmake their guardians together whether the pair likes it or not.

But in a town where obeying conventions is life and death, can two dreamers defend three lives, trust in love - and forge a future free of Cutthroat's iron chains? Against all odds, they'll fight for the family they were destined to become, or pay the price of freedom in shattered lives and broken hearts.

Hello and welcome to my author page. Let me tell you a little about myself, as that seems to be the main purpose of this profile. Believe it or not, I began my fiction career in the third grade when I told my class that a little sister I never had died of a black widow bite. I also wrote books through my teen years, always about a girl whose mother mistreated her by making her wash dishes, sweep the floor... you get the idea. Never finished any of those stories. But the idea of writing a real book and publishing it never occurred to me. It was a particularly vivid dream that drove me to drag out a portable typewriter and go to work on my first novel. In 1990 my second completed book, Tender Touch, brought me a first place win in a writing contest and the following year became a Golden Heart Finalist. That won me an agent and a contract from Kensington who published five of my western historical romance novels. My books have placed or won in other contests as well. Forever Mine received a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award nomination. I've always loved the Old West and I believe my novels reflect that emotion through their depth and vibrancy. I am always working on a new story. I hope you try my books and enjoy them. Follow me here on my author page and on my website at https://charleneraddon.com & get a free book.

The series will be multiple stories by various authors, but each story will read well as a stand-alone. The story is a clean western historical with a touch of history. The story is a spin-off from this author's book featured in the Bachelor and Babies series. Chase Givens will be one of the men who will adopt and raise the triplets born on the ranch, and after their mother left. Chase will marry Jessamine and raise Vella.

The story picks up in Cutthroat, Montana, in July 1894. Vella is the schoolteacher and lives in town near the school in a small house. She is buying food when a young boy snatches her market basket. With the aid of Marshall Baird McKiernan, they catch the culprit, a dirty little boy, but there is also a little girl with him. There have been reports of food items taken, and maybe this crime is being solved. As Baird and Vella talk, the miscreants take off, but not before, it is guessed that they are run-away orphans for the last orphan train.

The story is full of mystery, angst, suspense, secrets, revelations as Vella learns more about herself and her brothers, all from a comment from a stranger. It will have a preacher who doesn’t walk the walk, a former madam who becomes a friend, and three orphans who keep several people on a merry chase.

It is a town Marshall who made a deathbed promise against what he wants to do in life, trying to decide what is best for him. A school teacher who has compassion and goes out of her way to rescue these orphans with the Marshall's help.

The good, the bad, and the evil all play their roles in this tale. It includes three cleaver orphans who devise a plan to try and bring Baird and Vella together. Maybe it is the kids who need to pick out their adopted parents!

“We ain’t intelligent people,” Dewey said. “We’re kids who need parents and a home.”

I love how Vella was raised to not look down on people, care about them, care for animals, and give. She doesn’t look at the former soil doves as beneath her; instead, willing to teach these ladies how to read and write. When it comes to three orphan children, she is compelled to aid them with food, clothes, shelter, and love. If there is any way she can work it out and give them a home, she will do it. This new ordeal will open her eyes to the plight of her mother and help her understand.

Baird is a man who comes from a background of lawmen, but it isn’t his calling; it was a deathbed promise. What he wants to do is become a doctor. He also agrees with Vella on the future welfare of the three orphans. That family is essential, and it isn’t fair to break them up.

By the end of this story, I was laughing and crying happy tears. Sometimes stranger make the most perfect families when brought together by love.

“I love you so much. I think God must’ve led you to us ‘cause he’s bound to be please with how things turned out. I am.” --Jess

I really enjoyed this romance about a young schoolteacher who felt no rush to get married. Then she became aware of three orphans. First she had to find them. Then she had to convince them to trust her. To keep them from those with nefarious designs, she had to find a way to adopt them. That is when the orphans took matters into their own hands. Good characters, an action packed plot and some funny scenes. A fun read.

I'm smiling a silly smile. Through many trials and tribulations our sweet crew made their way to an extremely happy ending.

So what do you do when a trio of runaway orphans decides they want you to adopt them, even if you're an unmarried school mistress and a marshal who is discontented with his job? Read Vella and find out! I loved Vella and Baird, and I adored the orphans! The villain was deliciously creepy, the setting rang true, and I cried at the beautiful ending. What more could you ask for in a western historical romance?

This is another enjoyable book by one of my favorite authors. I loved the storyline and the main characters along with the secondary characters. My heart was sad reading about the orphan train and the three little runaways. Biting my nails at times, but as with all of Charlene's books, there's always a HEA. JudyE

I've read so many of Ms. Raddon's books and enjoyed them all. She has a style that digs into the characters and tells a real tale you get wrapped up in on page one. Vella is her latest and I think my new favorite. The story moved so effortlessly and all the intriguing events formed a truly heartwarming romance - with the signature surprise ending.
    You will enjoy this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Vella's grown up story. I first met her in the Bachelor's and Babies series, so I looked forward to seeing how her life turned out as an adult. I was not disappointed. Her story, along with her family members, the orphans and the Marshal kept me reading to see what was going to happen next. It's a beautiful story to read and I highly recommend it.
