First In: Cheeky with the Fire Chief (The Mixed Six-Pack) Kindle Edition

What happens when a feisty volunteer firefighter gets cheeky with her fire chief? Sparks fly, donuts melt, and cheeks burn.

SOPHIE

I was sure I had the fire chief job locked down. Until Nick West, AKA Mr. April from the hot fireman calendar, strode into the department. I can’t decide if he looks better in his uniform or in that picture wearing barely more than raindrops. I hate that he’s so attractive. I hate that he stole my job. But what I hate most is that what I feel for him may not be hate at all.

He gave me a paycheck. He gave me a purpose. And, I accidentally let him give me my first orgasm. Now things are messy because I'm wrecking his career and he's breaking my heart.

NICK

I’m used to women literally dropping their panties for me. What I’m not used to is having a woman be completely unaffected by my looks or my charm. I’d like to think that at least I have Sophie's respect, but she's clearly not happy having to call me her boss.

The surprising part? She sees the man beneath the looks and swagger—and that is addictive. Nearly as addictive as her sassy mouth and giant heart. Working so close together in tight quarters, I forgot why I took this job and I mixed work with pleasure. And now, it looks like I'm going to lose both.

First In is a steamy, contemporary romance and the first stand-alone book in the Mixed Six-Pack series. If you like off-the-charts chemistry and enemies-to-lovers tales that end in a satisfying HEA, you'll adore Danika Bloom's emotional—and funny—love story.

Wow this book was really well written and the characters of Sophie and Nick were amazing. Sophie being short she took no prisoners, she is fiesty and has been through a lot. Nick comes into town and take the job right out from under Sophie. This is a great emenies to lovers book. This has romance, action, misunderstandings, even some humor. Great story. This is worth reading. I loved the story.

First off, Danika is obviously talented and I loved her writing style. It flows very well, there are no clunky attempts at metaphors or similes that drag me out of the story, and her dialogue is top-notch. I frequently stop reading books within the first few pages if the writing style annoys me and I don't tolerate poor grammar/poor editing. There are so many books to choose from and I won't waste my time on something that turns me off immediately. I've stopped reading some authors completely, no matter how interesting the plot sounds, because the writing style is just so flip and cheesy and self-consciously "cool" that I can't stand it. So---I have high standards for writing style, and this book met them.

Secondly, I love that the main characters in this book are more "real" people, i.e. not billionaires or social media influencers or silly things like that which are so common in plots these days. Sometimes it feels like half of the plot of a book is just a recitation of designer outfits and fancy restaurant meals, and this one isn't like that at all. The heroine is a strong woman in a non-traditional career and I found that very interesting. I learned about how volunteer firefighters work, but not so much that it gets bogged down in unnecessary details. I did feel like the central conflict was a little frustrating (it bothers me when the whole thing could be unraveled if the main characters just had a conversation like grown adults and then the conflict would be resolved) but obviously that was not enough of a problem to stop me enjoying the book. (And I realize there has to be conflict and appreciate when it's not something like "I fell in love with the guy who's trying to take over my father's billion dollar company" LOL.) The hero is compelling and his inner monologue rings true to me and doesn't sound like what a woman would think a man would say to himself.

On the down side, there were a few times when I was waiting for a big scene, e.g. the characters had thought to themselves that they were going to say something to the other, and then...it just didn't happen, or it happened "off-screen" and I was a little confused about how we sailed past that plot point. For instance, I was hoping for a big, satisfying confrontation between Sophie and one of her siblings (can't say which one because I don't want to reveal any spoilers) but that didn't happen.

Lastly, I really enjoyed the Canadian setting and this glimpse of small town life. It's refreshing to read something set in Canada and not in Manhattan or LA or Chicago etc. like a thousand other books.

I almost never buy books unless they are from an established favorite author of mine---I will try new authors as freebies or from the library but in this case, as soon as I read First In, I immediately bought the next in the series. That is a rare occurrence! I'm sure the third one will also find its way into my Kindle after it's released.

Nick and Sophie are vying for the same chief of the fire department job in her home town. He is career so he gets it and she is second in command now. After just having her dad die, this is another major letdown. Her brother puts her through the wringer with a court case and the Sophie secret - one you will not believe. The romance stops for a while but comes back with strength. Suspense and surprises hit as a dear friend says bye. So many tear jerker moments and good hardy laughs. Loved the action and situations. Very well done.

Nick and Sophie grabbed my attention from page 1 and I finished this book in one sitting! The characters were relatable and well rounded. The events kept me turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning, too engaged to put it down for something so trivial as sleep.

Sophie and Nick are great together and have tons of chemistry. What got really old really fast was the lack of communication between them. It went on way too long. There were tons of opportunities by a slip of the tongue or a small comment that should have started the clarification conversation but the writer just kept dragging it out longer and longer. The twist at the end was a surprise and they do finally have their HEA.

Sophie has worked for the fire department as a volunteer and put in for the chief position only for it to go to a man from a different city. There is an underlying issue with the story about the city not wanting female firefighters, also has to deal with her eight siblings who want her out of the house after the father passed who she took care of and then there is the attraction to the new chief which she has never felt before. This is a good story with excellent characters which help move the story along a good read.

This story was hot in many ways, which is great since it was a fire-fighter romance. It was steamy which was good. When Nick and Sophie get together and ... it is hot. But it is emotionally hot as both of them are navigating real issues that they have to work through to get past emotional difficulties that could get in the way of them getting to one another. And it does not help that the competition is hot as they are in desire of the same job. Good story that has me wanting to read the next one in the series.

Sophie has had enough. She has been in this town for two years and it's longer than she wanted to be here. She has had disappointment after disappointment and it seems none of it is her doing. She didn't get to finish her nursing degree, her fiance left her and now the one position she's been wanting has been handed to an outsider. What. The. Hell? What's next a romp in the sheets with the man who stole my dream job? Nick arrived into town, saw a problem, jumped in to assist and heard a woman yelling. But not in pain, nope, this little lady was pissed. What's her problem? A excellent reading experience by Danika Bloom. Remember if you want to read a book you can't put down, you have to pick it up first.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and this is an honest review.

Wow! I loved this story about Nick the chief at the firestation and Sophie a volunteer firefighter. At first there was friction between them as he got the job she was expecting but that soon changed as their attraction for each other grew. Sophie was a strong and feisty character who was the youngest of 9 children. With the exception of her father, Sophie did not get much love or support from her family. Nick was also a strong character, a great leader and very supportive. He had a complicated family life but got on well with his brothers.

I loved all the characters. I really loved the slow burn and the banter between Sophie and Nick. The chemistry between them led to many steamy encounters (fanning myself). There was a lot of drama both with the other firefighters as well as Sophie's family, and unexpected twists which made the story even more exciting. The only thing I was puzzled about is why Sophie's siblings treated her the way they did.

    Highly recommended!

I enjoyed Danika's articles in Medium.com online magazine, and when she mentioned she had books too, I promptly checked them on Amazon, I saw the cover of this one and its description page and thought "A book of that genre, hmm, not my cup of tea..." but liking so much her articles and stories I had to check it out, I betted it would be nothing like the standard ones, and yes, just for starters "a genre" sizes too small for this book.

All in all it is a clever, engaging, imaginative, imprevisible and well told history, and I enjoyed every page.

I read time ago 50 Shades of Grey, out of curiosity about what was having the feminine genre so crazy over, to better understand the "enemy"...
And I actually enjoyed that history, but I just had to skim over the sex scenes, because that ones really bored me, although it have not been the case with the ones in this book, besides being interesting and inspiring, they have too a real life feel, relatable even.

It is a history about firefighters, and besides enjoying it, they will be able to read it too without having to raise a single brow, because the author is a former volunteer firefighter, and her husband a pro one I think, and certainly she knows the trade she is talking about.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh Canadian voice in romance
Reviewed in Canada on August 22, 2020
I admit I’m a sucker for a good Canadian romance. I love my homeland and I’m unabashedly proud to be Canadian. Of course I’ll take England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, or any other foreign country. I love my American friends but I don’t believe those readers won’t venture out of their comfort zone. And we’re just their neighbours to the north – plenty similar.

I also liked the book was set near where I live, the beautifully picturesque Howe Sound and the highway that runs from Vancouver to Whistler. For those who watched the 2010 Olympics, yes it is as beautiful as it was made out to be. And yes, the locals are as friendly as they seem.

Okay, so once I was situated in the book, it started with a car accident that set the stage for the conflict to come. I got to meet Nick and Sophie who would come to know each other quite well. The conflict was there from the start – they’re both competing for the same job.

Sophie is a local who loves her hometown and wants to make a home there. Her father, whom she nursed during the last years of his life, is gone, but she still wants to stay. The problem is that prices are astronomical and she can’t stay in the family home because all her callous siblings want to turf her. Because she wasn’t written into the will, she doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on.

Nick is the outsider. He was a fireman down in the big city of Vancouver but he wants to make progress in the career ladder and the best way to do that is to get management experience. The town might be small, but they have a solid volunteer force. So what happens when two strong personalities collide? Well, there are going to be hurt feelings and, well, sparks fly.

I will say that those hurt feelings were set aside in favour of the pursuit of physical pleasure and it’s not long before Nick and Sophie are making a fire of their own. A misunderstanding burns that relationship to ashes, and I worried they might never overcome the animus. Was it a little extreme? Perhaps. And a conversation would have cleared it up, but that wouldn’t make for good drama.

In the end I did get my happy ending, so that pleased me. The book also set up the next in the series which I plan to read next. Like I said, a fresh new voice that I very much look forward to hearing more from in the future.
