South in the Fall: Book #3 in The Apprentice Serices (The Apprentice Series) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 218 ratings

When 12, Blackthorn Wolfe hid when Comanches killed his family.

But at 17, he accepts any risk to prove he is NOT a coward.

Blackie begged for a chance to prove himself Pascal's Chief Scout.

His test is to lead a mule train from El Paso to Fort Laramie in 1858.

Pascal LeBrun, his godfather, and owner of the mule-train freight business, calls Blackie’s bluff. “If you take this job and fail, I’ll question why I keep you around.”

Failure means Pascal will toss him out with nothing – no horse, no saddle, no weapons.

No one out West will cut him any slack because of his age - Seventeen.

He must stand as a man, leading his team, and keeping them alive while crossing hostile lands.

Will Blackie succeed in Pascal’s challenge or lose his apprenticeship and be left behind?

Frank Kelso grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, the origin of the Santa Fe Trail. Historic sites, monuments, and statues abound highlighting the journey west, including the Wagons West, Pioneer Women and the Indian Scout located on the bluffs overlooking the wide Missouri. Writing western themed books fit in with his upbringing. His parents considered storytelling a family tradition and the taller the tale, the better, when sharing around the supper table. A biomedical research scientist in his day job, Frank writes short stories and novels to keep the family traditions alive. He enjoys living on an island on the Alabama Gulf Coast at the Florida border. Can you say Flora-Bama Beach Bar? Welcome to Paradise Island: sunny days, sugar white sands, turquoise blue water, fishing, and smooth sailing. Come on down, Y’all.

I enjoyed this novel about a young man given more responsibility in a transportation of goods business in the days before the railroad. Roads were rough, trails still needed to be discovered and marked, agreements needed to be made with customers, competitors, and those who claimed the land and didn't want others to cross it. There were several action scenes, a story of saving a sweetheart. The author provided a lot of details about an era not familiar to many. A great read.

I've read several of Frank's books, including all four from this series. Enjoyed them all. I gave this four stars because of so many proofing errors.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a learning experience about the way the untamed west got their supplies from very brave people who brought food, house hold supplies, powder and shot on mule backs and wagons through very treacherous and mountainous territories to trading posts and small towns. Blackie, a seventeen year old, serving as an apprentice to his godfather, Pascal, after being found when he was thirteen after his family had been killed by the Cheyenne, learns to be a leader and many lessons about trading and life. This was an adventurous story with lots of wild moments.

I wait anxiously every time i receive an e mail telling me another book is being released by Me Kelso. His newest writing is superb. His ability to tell a story is amazing. I love the tone and tempo of his writing. I see that the next episode is not due to be released until next April. Please, work harder dear author. That is too long to wait, especially during a pandemic...

I liked the first two books better as they had more complete stories #3 was a good read but didn't build anything to make more stories about . cleaning Blackies wound with alcohol would not have happened for a few years

Unfortunate events lead to a young man being left in the world alone and scared.
God is watching and shines luck on this boy while learning life lessons and compassion. Highly recommended series. Look forward to the 4th book

3.0 out of 5 stars Bogged down in excessive descriptors of daily life on the trail and geography
Reviewed in Canada on November 25, 2020
This is the third in a four book series. I found it tough going at times due to the excessive descriptors of the daily lives of the characters and the daily chores described in minute detail. There is not a lot of action and some of the characters need more fleshing out. I think it would be a better read if more detail was provided about the thoughts and actions of the lead character, Blackie. Book one was the best of the three. I hope book four is less descriptive of the mundane and involves more action for the main characters.
