The Debutante and the Duke: A Sensual Marriage of Convenience Regency Historical Romance Adventure (Seductive Scoundrels Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 929 ratings

All she wants is her freedom. All he wants is her…

Rayne Wellbrook shouldn’t be living in a luxurious London manor. She shouldn’t be the step-niece to a powerful duke, either. And she most certainly shouldn’t be sneaking into the neighbor’s gardens—even if the house is unoccupied. Or so she thinks until a rakishly handsome Scot startles her one morning. Though she’s wary of men and even leerier of nobles, this man with his too-long hair and piercing blue-green eyes sends her heart to frolicking. When he insists on an introduction, Rayne flees but can’t get the enigmatic new neighbor out of her thoughts.

Fletcher McQuinton, Duke of Kincade, is only in London long enough to put the finishing touches on his new business ventures, and then he intends to head straight back to Scotland. His meddling English mother has other plans, however—namely finding him an appropriate blue-blooded wife to become the next duchess. Fletcher has vowed to never take an English aristocrat as a wife, but when he comes upon a delightfully intriguing woman climbing his garden wall, he begins to reconsider his reluctance.

Can two polar opposites who are so perfectly wrong for each other overcome all that stands between them? Only one thing is certain. The road to happily ever after is about to get very bumpy…

From the Author

Dear Reader,

I adore Scottish Regencies or Regencies with a Scottish main character. They combine my two most favorite genres. If you've read the other books in my SEDUCTIVE SCOUNDRELS SERIES, you've seen Rayne mentioned a few times. For those who might be concerned about the historical authenticity of her given name, Rayne dates back to at least the fifteenth century.

In THE DEBUTANTE AND THE DUKE, Rayne tells Fletcher her name means song. That is the Scandinavian, Israeli meaning of the name. More commonly, you'll find references to the name in the medieval era and is derived from
reine or "queen." In Old French, raine meant frog, and in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, there is a place called Rayne, which means a strip of land.

As it often does, my muse knew more about her than I did. When I decided she'd love singing because her mother had been an opera singer, I didn't know the name Rayne meant song, amongst other things. That happens so often in my writing now that I have to believe a higher force is guiding me. While Rayne is not the outgoing strong, independent female lead, she is courageous and intrepid in her own way. She doesn't feel the need to prove herself to anyone, and I admire that in her.

Fletcher is the quintessential hero, in my opinion: confident, sensitive, and possessing a flirty sense of humor. I tried to create a believable conflict between him and his overbearing mother. People who have warm, loving parents can struggle with understanding dysfunctional child/parent relationships or a parent portrayed as a villain. Unfortunately, they are all too real and far more common than any of us want to believe.

I've mentioned several other characters you'll see in future books in the series too.

Love,
Collette

"He was, she had to admit despite her discomfort, quite the most perfect display of masculinity she had ever seen... shoulder length black hair, his big hands splayed on lean buckskin-clad hips.. " Oh my and a Scot to boot!! (plus he wore a gold earring!)

Rayne (love that name!) had climbed over the wall of the next door neighbor home which had been vacant, to sketch and read, which was her habit. But who did she find? None other than Fletcher McQuinton, Duke of Kincade, who had leased the house! Their first meeting was enchanting can I say? He was a little smitten although he told himself "She's nae for ye. She's English. A Sassenach." Well he was half English and the attraction was mutual.

Can I just say I absolutely adore Collette's writing? There is so much to look forward to... her humor that has me laughing out loud (yes the dinner, a carrot and peacock is all I can say), the phrases, description and romantic prose. sigh. I could not read fast enough to see how these two would come together and honestly? Simply magical.

Will interfering persons or past pain tear them apart ...

After a disappointing read, I needed something to cheer up my mood.
And I knew this author would not disappoint.
There is not much in term of hardship as both main heroes have let it behind but theirs left scars tattooed in their soul.
Rayne is enjoying her day to day life with her remaining relative, even if she would like to partake less in ton’s events. She is not even sure she wants to enter the marriage mart. She prefers a more quiet approach of life. Thus how she finds herself trespassing her home’s walls to gorge herself in the unruly garden bordering hers.
Fletcher is in need to put some distance between himself and the woman who brought him to life. Thanks to her, he saw the devastating effects of the worst to expect from a badly matched marriage. Why he vowed to himself to never make the same mistake. A scotsman needs a lass, not a simpering English rose.

Their chemistry is immediate, and while they are torn between their doubts and inner wariness, not a moment do they second-guess their feelings.
They just need a little nudge in the right direction and it will come from the most unexpected source.
The epilogue is much lovely and completes perfectly this sweet read.

Rayne Wellbrook dislikes living in London. She's attracted to the untamed garden next door to while away her time sketching and singing. Steps on both sides of the wall separating the two houses makes it very convenient. Unfortunately the house is no longer empty. Scotsman Fletcher McQuinton, Duke of Kincaid, isn't looking for an English bride, but his encounter with Rayne in the untamed garden of his leased house forces his emotions and his brain to think otherwise. The opportunities present themselves. A man can always change his mind about marriage. Fletcher, responding out of character, pursues Rayne to make her his Duchess. A charming romance with laugh out loud moments and a beautiful epilogue.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book gifted by the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Novella with no real plotline, characters are all dukes
Reviewed in Germany on October 21, 2022
This was my first book of the series so I didn't know any of the characters. Getting the dukes sorted took some time, then I had to laugh: so many dukes, all of them of the same age and close friends with eachother, their wives friends as well, are just too many coincidences.
It was love at first sight for the MCs and after meeting her for about five times he proposes, no longer conversations, strolls, or dances to get to know each other. It was just not believable.

Rayne Wellbrook is convinced she will never find a man she would not be repulsed by - and Fletcher McQuinton, Duke of Kincade arrives to prove her wrong.

Rayne and Fletcher are attracted from the beginning and soon find that their care a lot for each other.

However , an ambitious mama seems to separate them.

Their love story is sweet and is more than just their story - its an chapter in the seductive scoundrels series !

    Romance Level : 3.2/5

I definitely liked the MCs, and the vivid descriptive details such as the gardens and clothing were lovely. But somehow the storytelling itself seemed a bit choppy, so it took some effort to follow the relationships with all the friends & relatives named.
