- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2012In The Arms of Danger by Marie Higgins was an entertaining romantic suspense. Yes, I have not been on the edge of my seat turning kindle pages like this since Roxanne St. Claire's Bullet Catcher Series & Pamela Clare's I-Team Series! This was my first read from author Marie Higgins & it will definitely not be my last! I was truly impressed with her writing and story telling. The story sucks you right in from the beginning & takes you on a non-stop ride filled with suspense, twist and turns, betrayals, lies, misunderstandings, action, and did I mention hot sexual tension? ;)
Amazon provided a well-summarized product description of In the Arms of Danger therefore, I will not regurgitate it. What I will say is that this novel was well-written and I enjoyed every page of it. It was fast-paced, filled with great characters, a good storyline and a great plot. This was not one of those novels where the reader automatically knows "whodunnit." No, Ms. Higgins teases, packs in twist & turns & suspense that makes the reader hold on until the very end to find out "whodunnit" which is what I think romantic suspense should be. Overall, I highly enjoyed this entertaining read. Author Marie Higgins is definitely an author to look out for in the Romance genre! With that said, yes, I highly recommend this novel. Romantic Suspense fans will not be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2016I love this book and I completely felt that Taylor and Cory were a couple in love. We don't get to see their time in Bermuda which probably has a lot to do with why some may feel that it's more lust than anything. I didn't see it and I'm more open minded. The whole back and forth between them about whether they're good or bad was necessary and believable for me. Cory took guarding Taylor as a job and he didn't kill her the first chance he got, I think deep down Taylor knew she had nothing to worry about. It was more her using that as an excuse to remind herself why she shouldn't get involved with him so she didn't get hurt again. The same thing applied to Cory, he knew that she wasn't involved in his attempted murder, but he kept telling himself she was so she couldn't hurt him. His thing was that he thought she abandoned him. I did enjoy how everything came to light though and appreciated that the author took her time in bringing them back together again. That's one of my favorites things about her. She doesn't rush anything and it makes it that much more sweet to read.
Taylor's daughter was not an issue in the book and early on its clarified who her father is which was no surprise as its not the primary conflict. Although I don't think that her father would have been able to deduce that she was automatically his without it being confirmed by Taylor herself. It could have been anyone and just because she looks like someone or has similar traits to them doesn't mean that she's his. I would have like to see more doubt because he accepted her too easily without making sure she was his first.
Taylor as a whole, I loved her, she has a huge heart and does her best to try to please everyone around her even though she doesn't want to. Although reluctant at first, she accepted that she needed help in protecting herself and her daughter. She had her faults but by no means knew she was perfect and her daughters safety was always first priority. Cory was amazing, he's completely selfless and always looking out for others before himself. He's a natural protector at heart and the best for the job. He's incredibly forgiving and an undercover softy. Taylor and Cory together were just perfect. I would have liked to see some flashbacks or a couple of scenes when Cory and Taylor were together in Bermuda though. I think it would have added to the story seeing what they were like four years ago before when they were single and had no responsibilities. I only wish the story would have been a little longer but the storyline worked well as it was.
Some small things that weren't a huge issue but just a little awkward were the pet names and some dialogue. Not a huge deal, I could replace them with something else in my head. It just sounded very awkward when the male characters besides Taylor's father referred to her as darling, my dear, and honey considering they're supposed to be young and modern characters. They're very dated terms but because Marie is more of a historical fiction writer I can give that a pass because it's probably habit. The dialogue is done well but like the previous statement her historical fiction voice shows a lot in a modern day book. The formality in which the characters talk to each other sometimes makes it hard to remember that this is modern times. Again these things are minor to me but may be a problem for others who can't overlook dialogue that meshes together two different voices. Me, I'm just focused on the story and it delivered.
Now the one thing I felt that took away from the book is very minor but at the same time major for me. I understand it's the author's prerogative and she's recently decided to now exclude sex scenes when writing books. Nothing wrong with that, but I read a version of this book before that did include the smex scene and it made a whole lot of difference for me. It would be different if the book was completely clean and there was no sexual tension in this book but there was. It was building and building all the way up until...nothing. I was looking forward to that part and it just didn't happen. To be fair, the author did inform me beforehand that this book was retitled and cleaned up. Then I saw an Amazon reviewer said she felt this was too racy and that it wasn't her idea of a clean romance. I took that as ok this still has the smex scene in it which is what I wanted. But it didn't and that left me somewhat disappointed and a little cheated because I think it added to the story so much after giving you all those intense scenes where it makes you think it's gonna happen but doesn't. Like I said, if it was just clean I can get over the no smex scene. But it had some sensual scenes that felt they were teasing for what was to come and for it not to deliver, it took away from the book for me.
Above all I did love the story, the characters, and appreciated the book. There was only one major thing I didn't like with the book which I can't really fault the author for because she did let me know before buying. It's just more personal preference I guess and because I know what the story was like with a certain scene added. The other things didn't bother me just made it a little awkward reading so I'm giving four stars for this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2021This is a fast moving mystery with lots of action and suspense. The plot was original and the book was well-written. The characters were amazing, imperfect, and likable. The ending was unexpected. If you like action, suspense and clean romance, you will love this novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021A great book. Clean romance with mystery. Had you on pins and needles trying to figure out who was involved and behind all of the attempts on Taylor, Maggie and Cory’s life. Well written. Can’t wait to read more books of Marie Higgins.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2012In the Arms of Danger was an okay read, but the plot direction was obvious, the dialogue was a bit unnatural and stiff, and the characters' actions were baffling at times.
Taylor has a high profile father who has recently received death threats. In order to protect Taylor and her young daughter he hires a bodyguard. (To which she is furious because she wants independence???) Turns out the man he hires is the same man she had a torrid love affair with in Bermuda 4 years ago- Cory (What a huge coincidence!). However their affair ended quickly due to a bundle of misunderstandings, misdirection, and deceptions (You get this early no spoiler). Now Taylor has put her and her daughter's lives in Cory's hands if they want to catch this madman.
For me, I find it annoying when an entire plot concept is centered around miscommunication- where just the simple act of hashing something out with that person and getting to the truth will clear it all up. I was convinced that Taylor was a complete dough-head...especially when there are a billion clues that you might be mistaken...to think gee maybe I should talk about what happened in Bermuda. Also annoying is the fact that Cory did not really act like a PI, FBI Agent, or Bodyguard. With the exception of patrolling upon occasion I was not really convinced; his actions constantly belied that he was skilled. I don't want to be told he's capable, I want to be shown. I think Meggie, the little girl, was the best and brightest of the bunch and had the most believable dialogue.
Lastly the ending was completely rushed and their actions in the last 25% of the book did not make sense. This was a huge disappointment because I guessed who the culprit was at about 50% through the book so I was at least hoping for an exciting conclusion. Nope, didn't happen. My three stars go out to little Meggie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leichte Kost

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
A reasonable book to while away a rainy afternoon, but it certainly didn't live up to the product blurb, I think it could have been so much better. For me the characters were not entirely believable, and although obviously they had history I felt that this was not explored enough and was rushed in towards the end of the book
The finale when it finally came was a bit of a letdown and although there was a HEA, I felt I had been robbed.

1.0 out of 5 stars So so....
This book was okay. The story could have been really good if not for all the typo errors which can change how a sentenced sounds or is meant to be, she chucked instead of chuckled had me laughing, does anyone proof read these books? I also lost count of the times the words 'growl' and 'growled' were used. I'm glad I didn't pay for the book as it needs some work on it.
