Don't Forget Your Lipstick, Girl: Sister to Sister Secrets for Gaining Confidence, Courage, and Power (Sister to Sister Series) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

One of the things I admire most about my boss is when she speaks to me, she acts as if I matter. I want to be like her and make people feel important just by listening (Victoria).

I used to say, I'm' 'just a' mother or when I was working, 'just a' director. I have learned to embrace who I am and avoid negative self-talk. Now when asked I say 'I am a proud mother of two' (Anita).

Learning to take a compliment was a huge undertaking for me. I had to pause and think when someone would compliment me on my weight loss. I used to negate the compliment by saying something like, 'Oh I still need to lose more weight.' Now I simply say, 'Thank you with a smile.' (Sarah).

MEET THE SISTER TO SISTER AUTHORS

TWO SISTERS: Dr. Marilou Ryder, a former school superintendent and current doctoral professor, and Jessica Thompson, designer and girls' lacrosse coach are the proud sisters and authors of nine inspirational books for women and girls. Through their writing, speaking, and research, they galvanize women to summon their best selves to approach life’s challenges by accessing their personal power. Together, they interviewed women and girls from across the country, mapping the terrain of the gender divide. Their interviews reveal an uncomfortable truth - although women may display self-confidence they continue to possess self-limiting beliefs that prevent them from taking steps forward. To make progress on confidence, we need to challenge negative self-narratives (e.g. ‘I am not good enough / smart enough / pretty enough) and replace them with more compassionate and optimistic self-talk.

Jessica and Marilou are dedicated to Changing the Conversation for Women and Girls.

Editorial Reviews

Review

By MATT SZABO STAFF WRITER LA TIMESMarilou Ryder was conducting a workshop for school administrators in Sacramento when she witnessed something thought-provoking. It was time to focus on mock interviews, and Ryder asked for volunteers. She said that all of the men in the class immediately raised their hands, but none of the women did.

"As I was flying home, I thought, 'Oh my God, it's a confidence thing,'" Ryder said. "The glass ceiling still exists, don't get me wrong ... but I truly believe, through the research I've done and the interviews, that for women it really centers on that confidence factor. It's the ability to think that they're not just a teacher, they're not just a mother, that they can be anything they want to be."

This experience was the genesis for the Huntington Beach author's latest book, released in May. Ryder co-wrote
Don't Forget Your Lipstick, Girl: Sister to Sister Secrets for Gaining Confidence, Courage and Power with her sister Jessica Thompson, who lives in Naples, Fla.
The book focuses on helping women harness their inner strength. It's a follow-up to last year's
Don't Forget Your Sweater, Girl: Sister to Sister Secrets for Aging with Purpose and Humor.

Ryder, 70, is now a professor of doctoral studies at Brandman University and public speaker. She has written five books, including
The SeXX Factor, which was published in 2003 and focuses on breaking the glass ceiling.

Navigating a career path especially as a young woman can be challenging and scary at times. There are many barriers that prevent us from achieving our full potential, but many of these barriers we place on ourselves. What would happen if we stopped apologizing, took risks, and faced these fears head on? I found myself trying to answer these questions for myself as I read how other women did it. While those who shared their stories all had different career paths, they highlighted that women’s stories are intertwined and together we can teach, motivate and encourage each other. In addition to the key takeaways or “power tips” interspersed throughout the book, it also defines key terms such as mentor versus sponsor, both of which are key for women throughout their career. I intend to reread and practice these tips in my own life, as they have proven to be successful. Becoming a woman of influence can be learned- it is time we embrace our potential and become the best version of ourselves as we take that seat at the table with our male colleagues!

“Don’t Forget Your Lipstick, Girl,” is a fun read of stories told by women about their life experiences on how to gain confidence, courage, and power. The book includes interview of ten women varying in age, race, profession, and sexuality. It is packed with valuable tidbits called “power tips.” An overriding theme in the book is the value of a mentor as well as women promoting women. I recommend this book, especially, for women as they prepare to enter the workforce. Well done Dr. Marilou Ryder and Mrs. Jessica Thompson!

Many books dealing with such a heavy subject as gaining confidence, courage and power for women tend to be quite serious and frankly, boring to read. This book is lighthearted and at times really funny. All women (especially our young women) can gain bits of knowledge for their personal and professional lives with this book. From taking a compliment with grace to dressing with style to limiting the use of F-bombs at work….all of the tips will work well for any woman. Easy to read, upbeat and worth the investment.

Sisters Marilou Ryder and and Jessica Thompson nailed it in this whimsical narrative of how women can be recognized and heard as they navigate their personal and professional lives. The vignettes and anecdotes really hit home. What a great read for a book club or professional development opportunity focused on helping women master the moves of career advancement.
