Don't Forget Your Sweater, Girl: Sister to Sister Secrets for Aging with Purpose and Humor (Sister to Sister Series) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 63 ratings

I think there's a certain beauty particularly to women as they age. I don't have a problem looking older (Sandy Age 68).

My advice to women as they age is to eat right, don't drink too much alcohol, find girlfriends to hang out with, get a dog if you can, exercise, keep away from the make-up counters and oh yes, be present. Life is short (Shelly Age 72).

I think women are getting to a good point in the world and [equality] is not too far away. When I was born women weren't allowed to vote. I still vote and know I can make things happen by voting (Fannie Age 100).

MEET THE SISTER TO SISTER AUTHORS

TWO SISTERS: Dr. Marilou Ryder, a former school superintendent and current doctoral professor, and Jessica Thompson, designer, and girls' lacrosse coach are the proud sisters and authors of nine inspirational books for women and girls. Through their writing, speaking, and research, they galvanize women to summon their best selves to approach life’s challenges by accessing their personal power. Together, they interviewed women and girls from across the country, mapping the terrain of the gender divide. Their interviews reveal an uncomfortable truth - although women may display self-confidence they continue to possess self-limiting beliefs that prevent them from taking steps forward. To make progress on confidence, we need to challenge negative self-narratives (e.g. ‘I am not good enough / smart enough / pretty enough) and replace them with more compassionate and optimistic self-talk.

Jessica and Marilou are dedicated to Changing the Conversation for Women and Girls.

AUTHOR Q & A

WHY DID YOU CALL THE BOOK, DON’T FORGET YOUR SWEATER, GIRL?

We took one of the Wise Woman Tips that resonated with us and decided it would make an engaging title. It starts out back when we were children… our mothers always made us remember to wear our sweaters. Then when we became mothers we did the same thing, always reminding our kids to wear their sweaters. Now that we are older… a sweater seems to be one of the main items we need to have with us… We get cold… we need the sweater. We get hot, we take it off. The problem sometimes for us is that as one ages, we tend to get a bit forgetful. We either forget to bring our sweater or if we do remember, often we have a tendency to leave it behind on a chair. Don’t Forget Your Sweater is a life metaphor for a woman as she ages.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM WRITING THIS BOOK?

Growing old and facing each decade can be a struggle and challenge. As women age their world becomes smaller; fewer friends and contacts. This is true for me being 70 years old. Hearing the stories of other women, helped me realize that I am not alone. I am not the only one struggling with aging. It was good to know that there are other women out there like me. I also learned that aging doesn’t have to be a negative experience if approached with some HUMOR and STRATEGY. All women in the book had challenges. And all of them were optimistic and tried not to dwell on getting old. Even the two 100-year-old women said their advice to other women was to just keep on living. Each decade seemed to be more difficult than the prior decade mostly due to physical constraints or health issues. These women were able to deal with loss and ease into each decade, each still having hopes and dreams for the future… be it ten more years or one day of life. This book is mostly about women being optimistic, feeling freer than they ever have, and staying in good MIND, BODY AND SPIRT to keep living a good life as long as possible. They never look back.

Editorial Reviews

Review

My sister and I decided to read this book at the same time and share our reactions with each other. We both laughed so many times as we recognized ourselves in the stories. The women are brilliantly real as they share their stories, insights and advice about healthy aging. At 57, it made me realize that I still have so much to look forward to in my 60s and beyond. A great read, and if you have a sister or bestie, buy two and read it together! (Rebecca Summer)

LOVE this book! It is packed with humor, real life stories and very uplifting tips about aging with grace, humor and style. What a great read for all women of all ages. Once I started reading it, I simply could not put it down. This will be one that I will pass on to all my friends.

Don't Forget Your Sweater, Girl is one of the best books I've ever read about mature women! I would highly recommend this book to all women! Young and old! So welcoming to finally know I am aging just like all our sisters out there! The contributors in this book were all so honest and genuine about their lifestyles! This book made me feel so much better about myself knowing I'm living the "new mature normal"! Thank you to the authors for reaching out to women like me! This book will be around for a long time and is a must read for everyone! Great Gift Too!!!

These sisters have created a masterpiece for all of us who are 60+. The women they interviewed are very forthcoming with what makes them happy and able to get the most out of life at our age. As a result of reading it I am now weeding my junk, walking more and doing what makes me happiest every day. Congrats to Dr. Ryder and her sister on a great read! (Tamera Smith)

If we're lucky we will grow old. Reading this delightful book made me realize we don't need to "be old". The authors have compiled the vignettes of women who give their insights into enjoying this stage of their lives. It's lighthearted and yet profound. You will feel like you've had a conversation with a good friend. Get comfortable and enjoy!

Reassuring to read how others are facing aging gracefully. My one reservation about this book is the prevalence of the opinion that staying active and using one's brain will stave off Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Good habits can mitigate age related memory lapses but dementia is a group of physical wasting diseases that can hit anyone. I have not completed the book yet but so far have seen no such clarification from the author.

I bought this book as a Mothers' Day gift for every mom in my family. It is hysterical and made me laugh many times while reading it. As a woman approaching 50, I will be taking the advice of all of the women interviewed in the book. Got a text from my mother-in-law yesterday and she said she's laughing and enjoying it too! Cheers to you two. I will keep active and not give up wine :).

This book made me reflect on what is important at this stage in my life and it provided me with new perspectives on everyday goals and the way some women are dealing with aging.
Although I would guess written for the older woman in mind, women of any age can benefit from the insight of those who were interviewed for this fast paced and entertaining book. I found it utterly enjoyable to read.
