Review

Greg's Fifth Adventure in Time is the fifth book inthe 'Adventures in Time' series, reaching readers ages 9-16 who relish sci-fitime travel and historical fiction with its delightful adventure mystery.

Greg and Rose are now sixteen years old, but theirtime-travel adventures haven't stopped.

Rose observes that Greg
"constantly strives to provehimself better than anyone at every challenge we are given", a habitshe both admires and finds annoying. She provides the introductory chapters totheir latest time travel adventure, insisting on being the first to chart theirpath.

Greg's point of view begins in the fourth chapter, when thestory is well on its way to proving captivating. He admires Rose's abilities, which seem far beyond the capabilities of most girls:
"Rose is so mucha tomboy. She can ride, shoot, fish, etc., better than most boys and manymen."

As young readers gain insights on Greg and Rose throughtheir own actions as well as their friendship, they receive the foundations ofconnection that power their time-traveling mishaps and encounters with elementsof history and mystery alike.

Some of the characters in the prior time travel encountersreturn, here; but no prior familiarity with the series is necessary in order toquickly absorb the concept of this time-traveling duo, their familyrelationship with parents who also travel into history, and their latestmission.

From 1898 Skagway to a plot which could change WesternCanada's history, readers receive a vivid story that centers not just on thetime-hopping experience, but the circumstances that Greg and Rose struggle to change.

As the search for pivotal characters Nick, Nate, and Jesseheats up, young readers will appreciate the twists and turns which blendmystery with history.

The history is injected throughout the story as backgroundinformation Greg and Rose must learn:
"Hey, Dad, what's this AlaskaHighway?" "Ah, a feat of construction during a difficult period. It was builtduring World War II to connect the lower 48 United States with the Territory ofAlaska by roadway. Construction began in British Columbia, at a town calledDawson Creek. The highway runs to Delta Junction in Alaska. It's also calledthe Alaska-Canadian Highway or ALCAN. It is now paved along its entire length.""Will we be taking it to Dawson City?" "Greg, answer the question for yourself.Find Dawson on the map and see if it is on the Alaska Highway." "Always has tobe a learning experience, doesn't it, Dad?"

Greg's Fifth Adventure in Time is a vivid time traveladventure that educates and entertains simultaneously. It's highly recommendedfor new readers and prior series fans, especially those who enjoy historicalfiction and time-traveling sci-fi action. - Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review. Older kids are in for a wild ride with award-winning author Connie Huddleston’s final Adventures in Time series installment, “Greg’s Fifth Adventure in Time.”

And to be honest, this adult reader was just as intrigued by the historical fantasy encompassing a royal encounter with an old-timey Scottish monarch mashed up with dastardly villains in the Yukon’s 18th-century Gold Rush.

I want to be part of the Smithsonian Time Travel Training Investigative Unit. Oh, to be able to prep with these young travelers for their time jump to the Moose Creek Lodge --- especially wandering the STTTIU wardrobe room to experience delicious period clothes for their journey, like straw hats, corsets and high-button shoes!

The author meticulously sets out historical aspects of the team’s time-tripping adventures. She weaves period factual details, so readers feel they’re alongside the team and the Canadian Mounted Police in hunting down baddies during the Gold Rush.

I like the way characters “talk” to readers and take turns tossing storytelling duties between Greg and Rose for different perspectives. Best, the story is written as a book within a book as Greg authors - wait for it- a series of time travel books!

A list of characters in front of the book helps readers new to the series keep up with long-time fans. The glossary at the back reinforces historic references and cultural terms for everyone. Highly recommend this tale to engage older tweens and YA readers in adventures, history and fantasy.

This is the fifth installment of Greg's adventures. It neatly wraps up an ongoing storyline and starts Greg and Rose on their life paths. I am currently reading the Outlander series as well and this book (coincidentally? ) tied into that series, which was interesting. Some parts were a little too explain-ey for me, but I am older than the target audience. It's a fun book and I enjoyed reading it.

I have to admit, I started backwards reading, author C.M. Huddleston's last book in her series, "Greg's Fifth Adventure in Time" first. Now I want to go back and read them all. You'll feel the same way if this is your first book of this series.
I enjoyed the immense research, Ms. Huddleston did, taking readers on a trip with excitement and well thought out characters and scenery. The wardrobe room and the detailed information about all the period costumes were fascinating to me.
Enjoy your travels with Greg, Rose, and so many other wonderful characters.

I loved and would recommend "Greg's Fifth Adventure in Time." It was packed full of action and new, interesting characters. I very much enjoyed reading about the places Greg and Rose went. They were very interesting. I loved this book.
