The Little Girl in the Moon: The Big Idea Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Every night the little girl in the moon watches the earth from afar just like the earthlings gaze at the moon and wish upon the stars. One night she sees so many wishes not quite reaching the stars and she tells her mommy how it worries her. She wants, with all her heart, to help the wishes get to the stars so they will come true. Her mommy whispers a secret to her that sparks the little girl’s imagination. Before long the Little Girl in the Moon gets a ‘Big Idea’ and she and her Moonling friends write a song to go with it. All the moonling families gather to sing the song and something very special happens. The “Big Idea” works! And, for a moment in time, there is peace and harmony in the universe.

“This is a very special project that touched my heart. What I love most about this book is that everything is done by Diann with such love and care.”

This is an adorable book about a little girl who lives on the Moon being very concerned about her fellow children back on Earth, and some of their hopes and dreams which aren’t quite making it to the stars (that is where they are acted upon). Her mum advises her to sleep on it, and suggests that by the morning she will have figured out a way of generating more moonbeams to carry these wishes out to the constellations.

As it happens, she did have a wonderful idea, and enlisting the other moonlings, managed to generate a whole whack of extra moonbeams through song, and the stars became brighter and the Moon turned blue for a time.

The beautiful illustrations by Diann Floyd Boehm immediately reminded me of that other heavenly book, “The Little Prince’. It’s a story about hope, generosity, compassion and love, and it would certainly make an awesome, inspirational gift for any children aged 2-7.

Beautiful story about hope, selflessness, imagination, teamwork and harmony by working together for others through music! In this story a little girl in the moon wants to send moonbeams to earth to help the extra wishes from the earthling children reach the stars. But how? After sleeping on the question and a secret from Mommy, the little girl gets all her friends together to write a song to create more moon beams – because happy music filling the universe makes moonbeams! Soon all the Moonlings, young and old, sang - and as they sang, the moon became brighter and bigger drawing the attention of all the Earthlings! This gave hope to everyone that their wishes would be heard and maybe even come true!

What a wonderfully happy story filled with positive messages for all kids (and grown-ups, too)! I love how the story ends asking the reader what he/she would wish for. Ask your children – I’ll bet you’ll get some interesting answers! Then teach them the differences between material wishes and more altruistic hopes. What would you wish for?

This book leaves a positive feeling as it is filled with many wonderful messages for kids. I liked how it starts with a little girl raising a concern. Instead of solving it for her, her Mom encourages her to find a solution. It is good to see teamwork and music being used to solve the problem.

It was great to see the variety of wishes ranging from material wishes to ones that just wished for other wishes to come true. It reminded me of the time when my daughter had a school homework about writing 3 wishes. For the first two, she wrote about two material things she wanted and then she stalled. She asked me if it's okay to simply wish for a good life. Of course yes, I thought. That's when I realized how little kids are confused about wishing for abstract things. This book shows them it is possible to make many different types of wishes.

It is charming in many ways and a great read-aloud, possibly a good sing-along too.

I like that it shows that the girl in the moon cares about others, and the book sends a positive message about thinking of others before yourself. I think the idea of the moonlings working together for the greater good is a powerful message. The overall theme that music brings people together is so important and relatable. The illustrations work well with the story and emphasize the author's message.

The moon’s inhabitants, Moonlings, love the earth’s children and care a lot about them. They want to help the Earthling children convey their wishes to the stars by sending moonbeams, and they have a secret plan to make this happen.
This story gives children hope that their wishes will be heard and come true. The prose is almost poetic, and we are treated to a space song!
The author’s creative illustrations of stars and moonbeams whirring around in space inspire wonder and leave room for children to imagine what the stars and Moonlings are like!
I can see that this charming story can be read to children falling asleep, or any time. Maybe they too will make a wish on a moonbeam.
I received a complimentary version of the book, and have voluntarily written this review.

Diann continues her focus on bringing peace and happiness to the world! Using moonbeams to carry the wishes
of children creates such a happy feeling. The use of music to increase the number of moonbeams carries the power of singing to create happiness throughout the world. The blue moon brings in a creative science element for children to learn about how they, as well as moonlings, can see this moon.
