What She Saw: a gripping psychological tale of lost memories (Beyond the Veil Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 3,612 ratings

Imagine waking up on a train with no recollection of how you got there. You have no idea who you are--no name, no memories, no life. The only thing you know is, you cannot tell anyone, especially the police.

By chance or by fate, leaving the train in a beach town, this young woman runs into someone who knows her and gives her a ride home. There she finds two IDs, two sets of keys. One face, but two separate lives.

Claudia Rose, Detective Joel Jovanic, and Dr. Zebediah Gold from Sheila Lowe’s Forensic Handwriting Mystery series play a vital role in helping her uncover a devastating past and learn what she saw that robbed her of her memory.

From the Author

I wrote What She Saw when I was between publishers. The idea of amnesia has always fascinated me, as well as another theme in the book that I will leave you to discover. I didn't know at the time that this book would turn out to be the prequel to my next book, Proof of Life.

What She Saw is a Great Prequel to Proof of Life.
5 out of 5 stars
What She Saw is a Great Prequel to Proof of Life.
"What She Saw" is a Prequel to "Proof of Life" which will be available for purchase May 7th 2019. They are Books 1 & 2 of the "A Beyond the Veil Mystery" series. Sheila kindly sent me a copy of What She Saw to read before I read Proof of Life. I read both books, in one weekend, and I enjoyed them very much. What She Saw is a psychologically thriller exploring what it is like to have no memory. A great read before Proof of Life, but not required if you want to focus on the more spiritual book Proof of Life. Because I had received Proof of Life first, I had opened the PDF and read the prologue. In the prologue Sheila had describe a NDE which had enticed me straight into the book and I very much wanted to read it, but I wanted to read What She Saw first. So I waited for the PDF of What She Saw and I read it in a day on Saturday and followed that with Proof of Life on the Sunday. IE: I think that both books fit into the category of "I have to read the next page, I can't put it down". Proof of Live Review. I was privileged to have an advance PDF copy of the book to read in exchange for a review on Amazon. Since I am not able to review on Amazon yet here is my review of Proof of Life. In the opening prologue the main character, Jessica, experiences a NDE, though the author doesn't name it as such, I guess, it's because Jessica does not know anything about NDEs, so we the reader along with the character get to explore the results as Jessica develops into a Medium. In this marvellous book, the main character after her NDE, has a closer connection with the afterlife, and she becomes a developing Medium. As a reader we get to journey with her as she comes to terms with what this means, and what the choices are around these new abilities. I have been fascinated with the afterlife for many years, and I have very much enjoyed this well researched novel exploring the spiritual side of life. The experiences Jessica goes through are accurately portrayed, similar to what I have read about other real-life Mediums. As someone who is interested in the afterlife, NDEs and Mediums, I found that I wanted to find out what happens next, which lead me to read the entire book in a day. Even without the spiritual elements it is a great story, with a fast moving plot and well rounded characters. I highly recommend both books for anyone, if you already have a interest in spiritual matters, you will enjoy the portrayal of someone learning to be a Medium. If you currently don't have any interest in spiritual things, maybe this book will ignite a spark that will encourage you to learn more.

    Although you may see or hear the character name, Claudia Rose, in this book, What She Saw, is not part of her series... This diversion, in my opinion, just may be the best novel Lowe has published and has a distinct freedom from handwriting that could be Lowe's hurrah as she takes a step away from her specialist series... I applaud this free-standing psychological mystery entry as one of the greats from this now seasoned writer. This novel is loooooong on suspense and terror without much in the way of character expertise in forensics. The story is creepy, scary...and without a clue for readers as to who the heck the main character is! Two different styles of writing, genre development, and a future opening in the psychological suspense genre which could only be slightly improved with a little romance...LOL

    I think I might be one of the few who began reading Lowe with her very first book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm hoping her series will continue but this diversion, preferably, will be just one of many, many more. This story was not only unusual and a big piece of weird good stuff, but we amateur bedside detectives just will not be able to get a break. Her clot is tight, extremely well written and she keeps beckoning us with her finger to keep following, turning those pages, until she finally says, OK...here it is! One wrapped up brilliant and delightful package that we get to unwrap one page at a time!

    She didn't know where she was or who...but she saw her fellow passengers start pulling their things together and heard the conductor call out for Ventura station. She would try to get off and see if she recognized anything...But she just kept sitting there until a man approached her to see if she was alright and she hurriedly fot off, looking around and finally just set off. Seeing the Crown Plaza and the beach, she thought about going in but what could she say--they'd think she was crazy... just as the voice in her head kept telling her...

    She saw a sign for
    Downtown and
    kept on walking, even though she saw a couple of street hustlers who were already pointing and calling to her. One came to her and started the come on, but then they saw the cop car heading their direction... When she saw it, she was more scared of it than the thugs! What was that about?!

    The sound of rhythm and blues spilling into the street drew her and she paused to watch the band performing on a tiny stage in the Bombay’s front window. The husky-voiced singer was named Joe Wilson and the song he was belting was called Bad Behavior. That piece of information earned a triumphant little fist pump just before despair overwhelmed her again. How could she know these trivial things, but nothing about herself? More pressing was the setting sun, whose dimming rays were rapidly bringing dusk. What the hell am I going to do? “Jen! Hey, Jennnnna!” She hesitated for a beat, then started walking again, he couldn’t be yelling at her.
    ~~~
    He had been calling for her even though she didn't know him...but he did seem to know her and know enough to lead her
    home, though when she got there, she didn't recognize it as the place where she lived. She started with a tour, getting to know the place, and then saw a computer--surely something on there would help her... She discovered that he was apparently Zach Smith, her upstairs neighbor and he seemed like a nice enough guy so she was glad to meet him, even though she wasn't sure that she really was the Jenna he thought she was! But at least she had a place to rest before she continued to figure out what was going on.
    All she had to do was walk over and switch on the CPU. The renewed dread the prospect raised was not in her imagination. You are so chickenshit. Not yet. Turn it on! It can wait. Maybe she was just making another excuse, but there was something else Jenna needed to do before exploring the computer.
    First, she needed to face herself. Drawing a long, calming breath through her nose, she held it for the count of four, releasing it gradually through her mouth. Where had she learned to do that? Closing her eyes, she reached up the way a blind person might, and touched the landmarks of her features with her fingertips. The skin was firm and young, the cheekbones prominent. Feeling as prepared as she was likely to, Jenna opened her eyes and crossed into the bathroom...
    What was behind the anguish reflected in those cool blue windows to her soul? Her mind skittered away from the question as fast as a cockroach exposed to sudden light...
    ~~~

    One of the first things she found was a employee photo:
    According to a laminated employee photo ID badge in the purse, Jenna Marcott was an employee of BioNeutronics Laboratory in Oxnard.
    She also found a card for an appointment with a psychologist and a small ripped paper that said:
    I’m warning you, Jen, back off. Now!!! You’ve got to give me more time.
    All she could think was about what she was supposed to back off from... Of course, nothing came to mind!

    Had that person already made a failed attempt,
    leaving her with amnesia? Having no answers
    made her want to shriek at the emptiness where
    the memories should have been.
    What happened to me?
    ~~~
    Forgive me for adding a little bit of fun to relieve the tension that you will begin to feel as you continue to read. I must admit that I was getting personally involved with this woman--she was starting to do some crazy things that required a lot of guts.. Me, I think I would have headed to the ER room to see if I had been physically hurt... Instead, using what she had learned so far, she decided to take on Jenna's life, go to meet with the psychologist and also go to where she supposedly worked!
    The visit to see the psychologist made things worse! Apparently she had been to see him for an initial meeting and had told him that she thought somebody was trying to kill her! Of course she panicked, but use the information to find out what else had been said. The doctor explained that she apparently was a danger to somebody very powerful.
    Have to say what happened in this book caught me totally in shock--didn't have a clue where the story was going! Cool, right?! I think, for me, this became my favorite book, so far, for Sheila Lowe. I'm looking forward to watching her expand her wings into other genres. By how I enjoyed this book, I can't wait to see what happens in the future books Lowe publishes! Do check this book out--it's a perfect page-turning suspense novel that, even when the major twist occurs, it only keeps you turning the pages faster! Loved it!
    I really enjoyed this story. It is the first I've read from Sheila Lowe, and it likely won't be the last. My only real complaint is that I felt slightly misled by the subtitle. Yes, Claudia Rose (from the author's other books) is a character, but she is a small one and her part is minimal. Her presence kind of felt superfluous, the story would not have suffered had she been absent.
    However, the story is an amazing suspense thriller. After waking up on a train with no memory of who she is, the young female lead soon discovers that she has two sets of ID, two phones, even two addresses. With nothing to go on, other than her work ID, she charges ahead, trying to discover why she lost her memory, which identity is really hers, Jessica or Jenna, who can be trusted, what is her boss hiding and what is her connection to everything. Does she suffer Dissociative Identity Disorder? I loved seeing it all come together. A really well-written story.
    I do plan on reading more of Shelia Lowe's Forensic Handwriting Mysteries, I enjoyed the Claudia Rose character, this book served as a good hook, I suppose. I really want to know more about how handwriting analysis works now.
    This is a very quick read that provides some twists and turns and intrigue. Some readers may be able to see what is coming, some may be blown away. I was kind of in the middle where I predicted some things and other things were shocking.
    The characters are not very fleshed out, which is not very important for the story. It's not that kind of story as the why is more important than the who The author is an expert in handwriting, and she includes her expertise in the story. However it isn't a focus. I liked that she stepped away from what she knows and explored other subjects. It was clear she had done her research before writing.
    There are a lot of questions in this book. A lot. I was sort of bothered by that, but I also understand the necessity. Some readers may not enjoy reading question after question. There is also some internal dialogue that never gets resolved - I don't want to give any spoilers, but I will say I am not certain who the internal dialogue voices were supposed to be.
    The author uses a lot of convenience to tell her story. The main character conveniently finds her way home. She conveniently finds her way to work. Those are just two examples. Of course that is how the story is advanced, but so many things were just too convenient. Also, the last half of the book could use some cleaning up - some punctuation and word errors exist.
    Overall, a quick read with some suspense and drama. If you enjoy this genre, it's worth it to check it out.
    What a ride! Nothing is what is seems. No one is who you think they are. You are headed in one direction and *BAM* the plot changes course on a dime. I found this to be an incredibly suspenseful story with great characters and plenty of plot twists to keep me glued to the story from the first page to the last. If you think you will just read a chapter to two before bed – you are mistaken. This story is more addictive than Pringles chips. I read along while I listened to the audiobook version of this story and I don’t know if it is just a matter of my book being older than the audiobook, but the audiobook didn’t follow the book exactly. It didn’t distract from the enjoyment of this story but it was quite noticeable. I felt the narrator did a good job overall but I do not understand why so many narrators feel the need to read so slowly. Unfortunately, speeding up the audiobook introduced unacceptable distortion that kept me from listening at any rate above 1.2X. Don’t let that deter you, though, this is an amazing story. I will definitely be looking for more from this author.
    While I did purchase a copy of this book, I did receive a free copy of the audiobook, regardless, I am voluntarily offering my honest and unbiased review.
    Jenna realises she is on a train and can’t remember who she is or what she is doing. She comes to the conclusion she is in some kind of danger but can she figure it out before it is too late?
    I found the story interesting and I wanted to get to the end to find out what happened.
    The characters were well developed and I was interested in their welfare, which is always a good sign.
    There were a few confusing parts but nothing major.
    There are a few typing errors which I felt should have been spotted before being published.
    Overall, a really great read.
