Outside the Lines: An Edge-Of-Your-Seat International Forensic Mystery (Claudia Rose Forensic Handwriting Mysteries 6) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 880 ratings

Forensic handwriting expert Claudia Rose has plenty of experience testifying in court, but nothing can prepare her for what happens this time when she takes the witness stand

When she becomes the target of a savage assault that leaves her traumatized, forensic handwriting expert Claudia Rose seeks refuge in the historic streets of England. Her tranquility is short-lived, however, when her path collides with her LAPD Detective partner Joel Jovanic back home.

Jovanic is caught up in the investigation of a deadly mailbox bombing that leads to a group of international ecoterrorists and its magnetic mastermind, Dax Odell. But Claudia uncovers a sinister connection to a powerful chemical company that is manipulating lives, raising questions about who the real victims are.

Pursued by both the London branch of the FBI and New Scotland Yard, she is pushed into a difficult choice between her principles and her partner. As the investigation heats up and the lines between right and wrong blur, she is faced with an unexpected dilemma, where the truth may be more elusive than it seems.

Outside the Lines is an emotionally charged mystery that weaves a web of intrigue and suspense. Fans of Hank Philippi Ryan and Kimberley Belle will be mesmerized by this gripping tale of Claudia’s struggle for justice, love, and sanity.

If you enjoy well-written crime mystery thrillers, you will love Sheila Lowe's unique and gripping forensic handwriting mystery series.

Review

"Full of thrilling suspense, Outside the Lines by Sheila Lowe is a fascinating story of modern greed, betrayal, and revenge. The apparent murder of a housemaid in a ritzy part of Los Angeles sets LAPD Detective Joel Jovanic onto the dangerous trail of ecoterrorists, while on the other side of the globe in London, his lover, Claudia Rose finds herself threatened. In a short time, both situations coalesce, and Jovanic and Rose, a forensic handwriting expert, join forces. The stakes rise to an exciting ending that reveals a long-standing injustice-and a twist no reader will see coming. Enormously entertaining, this terrific mystery is one you'll want to linger with."

From the Author

When I was invited to lecture at the British Institute of Graphology, I was delighted to accept. Not only because England is my home country, but it gave me an opportunity to set a Claudia Rose story there. I've lived in the US for most of my life (since I was 14), but being back in London always reminds me of my roots. I think of my grandmother ("nanny") and the aunts and uncles who are no longer there. The moments are bittersweet. The block of flats where I lived as a child in the 50s are still there. Of course, when I lived there, across the street was a cleared bomb site where we used to play. There were still pieces of broken furniture. I have a memory of finding a jawbone--animal, I'm sure. Maybe some of my love of mystery started there.

The book starts slowly but builds into an exciting plot with some anticipated twists and some not expected. The most significant negative is the author’s utter lack of knowledge about firearms and the protocols and laws concerning them. Perhaps this is understandable since she was born and raised in the UK, where they think guns are like rattlesnakes. But it is not excusable to write with such ignorance because it detracts from the story.

Much as I've enjoyed Sue Grafton's Alphabet Series, this was so much better! Forensic handwriting analysis is a fascinating subject and Lowe's background in the field makes her protagonist, Claudia Rose, all the more compelling. I especially enjoyed the insights provided into how handwriting analysts work and the details of handwriting that provide clues to the writer's personality.

The mystery plot was fast-paced and exciting, reading almost like a true crime case. Unlike other writers, Lowe doesn't need to resort to impossible car chases or gruesome details to ratchet up tension. Rooted in the contemporary world, her plots have plenty of intrinsic excitement.

Nor does she need Claudia Rose to dither about her relationship with LAPD detective Jovanich to keep readers turning the pages. The couple seem like a believable pair that anyone can identify with. They have a strong bond, but, like most couples, have their share of arguments and disagreements. Claudia Rose feels a slight attraction to a key suspect and Jovanich can't help feeling flattered when a hot female scientist flirts with him--the sort of thing anyone can experience without it threatening their relationship.

Lowe's writing drew me in right from the start, and the story still lingers in my mind. I'm looking forward to my next fiction break when I can sit down with another one of her novels. This is a really addictive series. And best of all, you don't have to read the books in order to enjoy them. I felt absolutely at home with the characters.

First, they covered the same ground over and over. I wanted to shout, "Got it, move on". Our heroine struggled with her fears, then she had one holistic treatment and became an adventurer??
There was another place where I was shouting, "The evil guy never clammed up and asked for a lawyer"??? Jeez, today the detective wouldn't get in the door.
I enjoyed the handwriting plot, is it real? But the rest was too quirky.

Claudia testifies on handwriting analysis and her fiance is a detective. She often helped him narrow down suspects in criminal cases. Sometimes the writing jumped to a different subject or person too quickly which was confusing to this reader.

Good book with so much action - so many crimes and bad guys to chase. What made it unique, however, was the detailed info on handwriting analysis and how it is used in forensics.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 18, 2023
This is about a fictitious handwriting analyst and the use of her skill in crime scenarios.
It soon got convoluted and the protagonist becomes involved at a deeper level than just reading someone's hand writing style.
I found this to be very plodding and the idea that a hand writing specialist should have more role than just the writing analysis seemed bizarre.

I didn't get all the way through the book as it became too far fetched with the operative sent across the Atlantic simply to see a person's writing 'in the flesh'.

While I appreciate that analysis is based on physical writing and not a photo, the idea that the person under suspicion should not have written anything by hand which could be accessed by the police is so unreal as to be ridiculous .

Anyway for me, it did not hold attention and interest long enough to see through to the end.
