A RITA® Award Finalist for Paranormal Romance
A BookLife Prize Semi-Finalist

Does a ghost from the past want the man of her future? Callie is thrilled when she inherits a house in the small town of Shadow Valley. The house is old and creaky, but she’s not afraid of hard work. Unfortunately, no matter how many repairs she makes, the strange noises won’t go away. Cold spots appear. Lights flicker. Footsteps sound down the hallway. Her nerves are soon so frayed that she resorts to calling the one person in town she hasn’t been able to get along with, bullheaded police chief Carter Landry.

Carter doesn’t have time to investigate things that go bump in the night—although, with Callie, the idea is tempting. He’s busy dealing with a rash of petty Halloween crimes. He knows that Callie’s house isn’t haunted… no matter what town legend says.

Still, when her distress call comes in, Carter is quick to respond. He may not believe in ghosts, but someone is intentionally scaring the sassy blonde. And he doesn’t like it. As he investigates, the friction between the two of them ignites into passion… and the strange occurrences in the house subside. But could Carter’s presence be the reason? Callie fears that her sexy cop may be the one the ghost has wanted all along.

I really enjoyed this one!

I really enjoyed this one!
I really enjoyed this novel! It was witty, fun and engaging - and everything in between. Calina "Callie" Thompson inherits an old property (the Calhoun Place) through a distant deceased relative and she's absolutely delighted. Unfortunately, when she finally arrives, she realizes that things aren't quite what she expected. But Callie is ready to ignore all of the small-town gossip and pesky, strict (aka HOT) police officers, because she has her very, own house. Except...the longer she stays, the less it seems like the house wants her. "She'd only taken a step away from the door, though, when the handle began rattling." Between the angry house and the hot police officer, what's a girl got to do? I liked this one! It was fun, endearing and sweet. I was really hesitant going in because I'm generally not a huge fan of the romance genre and this one does have some explicit content (and I am much more on the YA spectrum of romance) but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I grew to enjoy this one. The romance developed naturally - though, there were (of course) a couple of scenes that felt a smidge odd (i.e. Callie visits the Police Chief and ends up massaging his shoulders, leading up to a steamy...well, you'll have to read it to find out). But for the most part, I was honestly swept away by the plot - so much that whenever Mr. Police Chief and Callie were making goo-goo eyes at each other, that I wanted to be all, "Shush! Can't you see there's a mystery going on? Sex later, plot now." Definitely a fun little adventure in the romance section (and can I get a hallelujah when the novel's plot really holds despite being in the romance dept?).

I read a lot of romance, and a lot of ghost stories, so I'm always delighted to find both in one book (there aren't nearly enough haunted house romances in the world). This was a fun, sexy read. Hot hero. Steamy love scenes. Spooky haunting. All the good stuff. If Ms. Dean writes more ghostly romance novels, I'll read them.

This was a great book. I loved the story between Carter and Callie. Loved the paranormal story of Adelaide Calhoun, especially how she connected to Callie. And loved the history of Adelaide and the Underground Railroad and then the story of the convict, Morton. Loved how it all melded together. All of it was great. But and it’s a big BUT, I didn’t love the graphic, explicit sexual content, so that is why I gave it 3 stars. I just don’t like all of that in books I read. It was the perfect book, except for that. Thank you to #NetGalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read and give my honest review.

She’s on her way to see her inherited house. She’s excited to have her own home and doesn’t want to see a cop car behind her. She stops, he tickets her for driving over the speed limit. He’s not excited to see her coming to town. She’s pretty, blonde, and looks like trouble. And she drives like a demon. She gets another ticket the next day when she parks next to hydrant. She’s really beginning to dislike the police chief…

This author writes a good ghost story. She makes it sound reasonable and even gives the ghost a motive for her actions. She also adds some danger to the story to keep you reading. Her writing style is smooth and easy to read. I enjoyed this read.

The first thing that Callie discovers is that there’s something odd about the house. Not just the fact that it’s run down and needs repair, it seems to have a reputation. But no one wants to tell about it. That is, no one until she goes to lunch and the two old ladies working there are happy to share the gossip. The house has a ghost. A ghost from long ago. Callie decides if there’s a ghost there, she’ll try to befriend it.

With a boy the police chief doesn’t like helping her, she starts to put the place back together again. She thinks the boy is OK. The chief just sees all the trouble he’s been in. He is a good kid, he just experiences things he can’t understand or explain. He sees ghosts…

With a creaking rocker, a bedroom door that locks itself, and other oddities, Callie begins to feel afraid in the house herself. There’s a good reason for that. There’s one more secret about the house and it’s become the most dangerous thing in town.

The antagonism between the chief and Callie suddenly disappears and they realize they are attracted to each other. Is that a good or a bad thing? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

This review is written voluntarily after listening to the audio version of this book.

Ghost stories aren't my usual genre but something about this book appealed so I decided to download it and listen. I am so glad I did because I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Callie writes a syndicated advice column, Quick Kate, and can work from anywhere thanks to the wonders of the internet. When she inherits an old house from an aunt she didn't even know she's thrilled and decides to make her home in the small town of Shadow Valley. The house may be old and in need of work but she’s not afraid of hard work. But she wasn't prepared to be sharing the house with one of her ancestors, Abigale the lady who originally had the house built. She hears strange noises and experiences cold spots. Food disappears, lights flicker and footsteps sound down the hallway and the lock on her bedroom door keeps sticking, or does it?

One night the terror she feels is just too much and she resorts to calling 911 who immediately send to her aid the one person in town she hasn’t been able to get along with, police chief Carter Landry. Carter doesn’t have time to investigate things that go bump in the night—although for Callie he's willing to make an exception.

I'm not going to say more about the book, no spoilers from me - what I will say is the story flows well, has some wonderful characters and held my attention from beginning to end. This is a book which I have no hesitation in recommending. The narration by Susan Marlowe is well done and enhanced my enjoyment of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good ghost story romance!

It's my first read by this author, but I loved the way she combined the ghost story element with the mystery element in the novel. Sometimes, it was hard to tell, even as the reader, was it the ghost or not???? I don't want to describe anything about the plot as I don't want to give anything away. But along with the great mystery/ghost story, the romance blends in beautifully. A solid 4 1/2 stars.
The one thought that nagged me at the end though, was what happened to the house? I had the impression that she and Carter would live in the house his grandfather had built, but if so, what happened to her house?
