Accepting love after rejection is a journey of its own.

From the Author

By the time I'd finished my debut novel, "Desire of my Heart," I knew I had to tell Singing Bird's story. A strong Arapaho Indian, she captured me with her internal beauty.

Singing Bird's past is full of abuse and loss. Her tribe misjudged her because of her quiet, almost hidden strength and intelligence. She soon realizes this is not enough, so she seeks a savior to help her and her young son. She thinks Pete is the answer but learns of her need for the true Savior through the kindness of friends.

Writing this book had me confronting my personal loss and the yearnings of my heart.

I trust you will enjoy the adventure.

From the Inside Flap

Will Pete be able to accept God's will for his life, even if it means losing the woman he loves?

Pete desires a wife and family with all of his heart, but waiting is hard. Then the woman of his dreams reenters his life, and his hopes soar. Love and happiness, however, seem to stay out of his reach. All the while, Pete must keep up with some challenging interruptions.

Charlie wants adventure. But life on the Missouri prairie in 1860 is not the stuff dreams are made of. Charlie wants to go his own way and is struggling to submit to God's plan. Then suddenly, Pete's biggest interruption becomes Charlie's greatest adventure.

While you read the twists and turns of this remarkable journey of faith, you'll realize how alike we all are in our resistance to accepting needed change in our lives, even when it leads to a better life.

Stories of conscious kindness
Mimicking the quick settlement of the frontier, the second book of the Shumard Oak Bend series brings in characters thick and fast. Fortunately, all are intriguing with well-developed backstories and clear motivations. Pete Manning originally moved to the western frontier while running from the law. Now, his name is cleared, and he longs to make his house a home. The one thing he's missing is the woman he met two years before and never forgot. But she and her people, the Arapaho had moved on. He'd missed his chance. When his independent niece shows up unexpectedly, Lizzie's desire to live outside of society's norms injects new energy and goals into Pete's predictable life. Instead of simply surviving, performing daily chores, and ingesting barely edible food, Pete is pushed to make something of his land and his life. He even contemplates seeking Singing Bird, the woman he loves, and offering her his heart. The story of The Shankles, from book one of the series, continues as they grow their land, their family, and their extended circle of friends. Despite the outside conflicts of racism and sexism, The Shankles make it clear to everyone who crosses their threshold that not only does their family believe the Bible's teaching that we are all of one blood and that all people are made in the image of God, who has no regard of race, they put that belief into practice. With All My Heart is a refreshing anti-racist book set in the antebellum U.S. The interwoven stories of the characters offer a rare glimpse of true Christianity played out on the frontier.

If you love Christian historical fiction authors like Julie Klassen, Kristi Ann Hunter, Pepper Basham, and Tamera Alexander, I think you’ll love this historical fiction series by Heidi Gray McGill.

With All My Heart is the second in the Shumard Oak Bend series. I recommend reading them in order (and if you subscribe to her newsletter, you can read the prequel…it’s good, too!).

The writing in these books is superb. I love the way she develops characters, I love the dialog, and the plot keeps you turning page after page. It’s hard to stick to my bedtime when I read her books.

As far as I know, other than this series, Heidi has written one other historical fiction book, A Bride for Harley, which is also excellent.

Heidi’s books should be at the top of your TBR list…they are so good!

This continues from book one telling the story of Charlie & also about the family friend, Pete. Multiple other characters are updated from book one. It can take a log to follow who's who as the cast of characters continues to grow. All the families continue to grow along with their adventures. It's worth reading.

Charlie is almost 18 when Lizzy arrives at her uncle's farm. We assume she is near Charlie's age but it is not specified. These two are constantly at war with each other so of course they are going to wind up falling in l9ve. Singing Bird and Pete likewise have their fiery relationship.. I accidentally read book 3 first, so now I need to scan through it to get to the final outcome. This has been an excellent series.

I really enjoyed book 1, Desire of My Heart, so was glad I could borrow this one through Kindle Unlimited. It picks up right after the end of book 1, so you'll want to read book 1 first if at all possible. The characters are great, and the plot twists kept me reading. I like the spiritual lessons woven into the story. Now I'm into book 3!
