- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021“The Sins of the Past” is a delicious Victorian horror of a Lovecraftian bent. The characters are incredibly detailed and well-developed. The settings are lush, and fitting with the time and era and the storyline is vivid and immersive. Even the cover is absolutely perfect, gorgeous and unsettling at the same time. It has everything that a great book needs to have in order to tell a great story and it fully delivers on that promise. I found myself completely swept away to another time and place as I read this story of séance's, spiritualists and a desperate race against time for answers before an old evil is given free reign over the world of men.
Well-known skeptic, Ephraim Godwin, searches for answers to his family’s disappearance and has turned to the world of spiritualism, only to discover that its full of frauds and tricksters, until his path brings him to the doorstep of Zona Whitlock and her brother, Zachariah, both of whom seem to be the real deal. An unexpected disturbance at a séance, plunges Ephraim, and his good friend, Doctor Livingstone deep into the world of the supernatural, along with Zona Whitlock as they race to stop an old evil from being unleashed on the world. At the heart of the mystery is a man named Jonah Cook who harbors a personal vendetta against Ephraim himself.
This story is a beautifully written tale of terror and intrigue that will not disappoint. It spans countries and beliefs and combines supernatural and cosmic horror in complex but delicately woven layers. I am very much looking forward to the next installment in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2021This novel has a stamp of authenticity as it deals with spiritualism which was popular in the high class of the late Victorian period. Also, one of the central protagonists is Dr David Livingstone, explorer and missionary. Hell was unleashed in colonial Africa and now hell is catching up on its perpetrators. This is my favourite passage as it encapsulates the entire theme of the book.
The mass was no longer moving and the doctor had five
distinct piles. Ephraim dried his hands on a slightly soiled towel
and Kimbell stood by. Livingstone turned to the men and
frowned.
"I have no idea what this is as a whole," he said with a
touch of defeat in his voice. "But I can tell you there are at least
four humans and a number of rodents, felines, and canines mixed
together in this mass."
"Good God," Kimbell said his voice barely a whisper.
Ephraim turned to the inspector, "At this point, I don't
think we are dealing with God anymore."
The novel starts off in Agatha Christie style, with many of the protagonists in a spiritual trance in a room, when a pistol goes off. This is followed by one gruesome death after another of all the people somehow connected to the atrocities committed in colonial Africa. Much of the back story is told in the form of dreams or hypnosis. The author manages to create John Carpenter type tension of “The Thing”, as everyone knows that they can be the next victim and they don’t know which one of them is the culprit. Add to that a Bram Stoker type supernatural persona of evil incarnate and you have a combustible mix. This book is a must read for aficionados of horror stories for which it deserves a five star rating. It is suited for a Clive Barker type film, but that’s the problem, it would turn off many who find this material, vodoo, gore, etc abhorrent because it is quite overdone at times.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021This book.... this book! Incredibly well crafted, well researched, immersive and thoroughly obsess-able! I’m going to start by saying that I love the Victorian Era! The clothing, the customs, architecture, and the fascination with spiritualism. I’m choosy when it comes to books in this era because, if not researched well, they can be a mess. Eric Butler weaved a perfect tale that sucks you in, holds on and won’t let go!
The main character, Ephriam, is searching for the truth regarding the disappearance of his wife and son. After no luck, he searches out spiritualists to bring him answers. For the most part, he’s met with charlatans conning the vulnerable. However, Zona Whitlock and her brother seem to be the real deal. When Ephraim becomes inexplicably connected to Zona after a particularly eventful seance, an evil entity escapes the circle, bringing carnage into this realm. Ephraim, Zona and the lovable Dr. Livingstone must hunt this being, discover its origins and determine how to stop it before it wreaks further mayhem and threatens all of London!
Overall, this was a superbly written story by an up-and-coming master of horror! My only wish is for a book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Victorian Occultism seeped in Holmes and Cthulhu mythos
Butler transports you back into Victorian England as a man desperate for answers reaches out for answers beyond our world. Tired of outing the spiritualist fraudsters and quickly losing belief, Godwin’s life changes when he meets the Whitlocks. An evening séance sends them on a blood soaked race against time as something ancient and evil escapes.
Written true to style, Butler has created both loveable/hateable characters in an authentic Victorian setting. He fuses the worlds of mystery, occultism and horror with style. Having read his previous work The Shadow Within and Pope Lick Massacre, I was a little dubious about how he would settle into this sub-genre. Don’t worry, he nailed it.
If you enjoy a good Occult mystery splashed in blood, Holmes with a Cthulhu mythos, you will absolutely love this one.
