The Silver Stallion (Catalan Chronicles Book 4) Kindle Edition
Luca Baldi has some very prestigious enemies – the emperor’s wife, the Queen of Thessaly, Dario Spinola (the richest man in the eastern Mediterranean), the Duke of Athens, and the entire French aristocracy. This is a remarkable achievement for a landless, penniless peasant. Unfortunately, they all want him dead, along with the rest of the Catalan Company.
Luca and his mercenary companions have no allies, no money and no land, and as their many enemies close in on them, it appears their days are numbered. The scene is set for a final apocalyptic battle that will decide the fate of Luca Baldi, the Catalan Company, the Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Thessaly and the Latin lords of southern Greece.
‘The Silver Stallion’ is the final volume in the Catalan Chronicles series – the adventures of Luca Baldi and a band of Catalan mercenaries in the Byzantine Empire at the beginning of the fourteenth century.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2023I read all four books and was surprised at my ignorance of this piece of Medieval history! Unique and well written, giving personal characters the stage to tell their stories. A very good read.........

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2021I really like historical novels that explore little-known remarkable people and events. This series on the Catalan Company is an excellent example of that genre. I am familiar with certain mercenary companies that played significant roles in the history of western Europe, but I was unaware of the Catalan Company's extraordinary exploits in the Eastern Roman Empire. What this small ragtag army of misfits accomplished would be remarkable for fiction--but that it actually occurred in fact is truly astonishing.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2021Very enthralling to read. The main story is entertaining and the simultaneous historical info is very fascinating, without making the narration boring. I accidentally read about the Catalans and their main battle and subsequent history on Wikipedia “article is the day” a few days ago but this book still delivered in spades.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2021I didn't know this would be the final book in the series going into it but the battles and strategy were very good. Sad to see everyone go off into the sunset but I suppose all things must end. Nice series Peter. And enjoy your watery grave Spinosa!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2021Wish to know more of the Catalan company. This is great human interest with real battle scenes. I will look for more Darman.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2021Sorry to see the story of Luca Baldi and the Catalan Company come to an end. The characters were richly drawn, the pace perfectly set, and the battles all encompassing. Kudos for a great series!
