Editorial Reviews

Review

"I got goose bumps reading this. It was as if I was Jonah, and I was in the presence of God. Wow!" Pastor Taylor Overbey

"Jonah is imaginative, exciting and wonderfully
written. Very easy reading; both Biblically and
historically well done. Bravo!"
Father Healy
St. Anselm's Catholic Church - San Anselmo, California

From the Author

"Jonah In the Time of the Kings" is historical fiction taken directly from the Book of Jonah, with the addition of many biblical records in addition to historical documentation from the Assyrians nations. I visited many of the locations where Jonah walked, experiencing the excitement of the holy lands and taking a full two years to research the project before ever beginning the actual writing. I hope you enjoy this novel about Jonah as much as I did writing it, and that you learn more about one of the Bibles most misunderstood prophets.

Anthony Barbera is a novelist and composer with a lifelong passion for both storytelling and music. He began his creative journey as a film and commercial composer, earning his bachelor’s in music composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and later pursuing graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, where his work was performed by the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra.

Yet it was storytelling that ultimately captured his heart. After guiding a group of young writers and actors in their first film, X Marks the Spot, Anthony turned to fiction with a focus on deeply human, faith-driven stories. His published novels include 'Catching Baby Moses', 'The First Rains of October', 'Jonah: In the Time of the Kings', 'Assurity: A Space Thriller', and 'Izzy the Bernese Mountain Dog'. His latest release, 'Elijah: Fire from Heaven, captures the courage and calling of one man who stood alone for the Living God.'

I really enjoyed reading this book!! Anthony takes characters that we know in the Bible and brings them to life, making them relatable. He seems to have done a great job with his research and it was very eye opening to get detailed descriptions of what it actually looked like during that time for battles to be waged and for cities to be under siege. I feel like I have a much better understanding of what the time period was like and helps me to understand the story on a deeper level. I can't wait to read the next book Elijah!!

I really enjoyed reading about Jonah. I realize that it is fictional, but little is known about the Prophet. I
enjoyed learning how Jonah might have ended in the belly of the whale. Through the messages from God, Jonah is able to change the hearts of kings. The historical and biblical events of those times show God's love for all people.

Wow! It’s so good! Not only did this book get me back into the habit of reading again, but took me on a wild adventure from Gath Hepher, to the sea, to the desert. I know the story of Jonah backwards and forwards; it’s one of my favorite Bible stories. However, this version gave me a different view of the story. It explored Jonah’s character, his family and friends, added depth to the story that most of us only know from text, and reminded me the trip from the sea to Nineveh was not easy for Jonah even if the Bible didn’t mention what the trip was like. It also reminded me that Jonah was never alone, not just because of his fiancé and his friend Amos who was also a prophet, but because God was involved and was protecting him all the way through.
On a personal level, this book reminded me the need I had to pray continually at a time when I wasn’t praying that much. It also reminded me that God is not about to leave me in the dust; He’s got me and is going to protect me, just as He did Jonah (hopefully fish aren’t involved this time).
It was so good a story that I felt sad finishing up the story. I highly recommend this book. Even if you know the story of Jonah already, like I did, this masterpiece is worth it. Reading it, you’ll either feel like you’re back in the Bible times or that the Bible has come to life around you. God bless you Anthony Barbera, and to all you readers, may God reach you through this story.

I've always loved the story of Jonah and was thrilled when I found this audiobook. However, there are areas where the narration is distorted with what sounds like issues with the narrator's microphone so there are certain words you don't hear and strange microphone sounds. I tried getting a refund but according to audible they don't grant them.

It was a good novel if you like gory war stories. It definitely took a lot of liberty with things that aren't in the Bible. It could have done without some of the profane language used in spots...after all, it is a Biblically based story.

This is my first novel by Anthony Barbera. I found it informative, easy to read and true to the story in scripture. I love the reflections on God’s goodness and willingness to forgive, despite some of the despicable acts of the Ninevites. This is such an important message for all believers.
