5.0 out of 5 starssolid bookBy Andy Tolbert on March 7, 2008Format: PaperbackThis is another good one from anthony barbera. Norton is just a regular kid that likes to play ball but has some tough family issues. The role percy hawkins plays on helping norton out is awesome. It is another one of those books that keeps the reader turning page after page... Highly recommended.

From the Back Cover

The Ryder family insisted on keeping themselves tothemselves. Theresa and Jeffrey Ryder's marriage started out perfectly, untilabout the second week; then it began a free-fall spiral to hell. It took awhile, but eventually it completely unraveled. Jeffrey's 12-year-old son,Norton, was caught in the maelstrom. No one in town had an inkling that Theresahad left Jeffrey, not until she'd been gone for almost a week. That somethingwas amiss should have been obvious to everyone in the small town. Jeffreyworked all hours, was never at home, and if he was, he seldom made a lastingappearance. Bills clogged the Ryder mailbox. Theresa was a notorious shopper, andJeffrey juggled their creditors as long as he could.

Their son, Norton, well, he wasn't exactly the reasonable,well-adjusted kid one hopes for: an only child, perhaps his sullen manner piledup onto their great difficulty. The Ryders were just too busy making money--orspending it--to pay any attention to Norton.

How in the world Percy Hawkins, Hall of Fame wide receiverfor the Cleveland Browns, ever became entangled with Norton Ryder is truly anextraordinary story. Their relationshiptranscended race, social level and age, until a terrible mistake almost ruinedboth of them. What happened in Duram,California never should have happened, but it did. What Percy received for hissacrifice changed both of their lives forever.

Anthony Barbera is a novelist and composer with a lifelong passion for both storytelling and music. He began his creative journey as a film and commercial composer, earning his bachelor’s in music composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and later pursuing graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, where his work was performed by the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra.

Yet it was storytelling that ultimately captured his heart. After guiding a group of young writers and actors in their first film, X Marks the Spot, Anthony turned to fiction with a focus on deeply human, faith-driven stories. His published novels include 'Catching Baby Moses', 'The First Rains of October', 'Jonah: In the Time of the Kings', 'Assurity: A Space Thriller', and 'Izzy the Bernese Mountain Dog'. His latest release, 'Elijah: Fire from Heaven, captures the courage and calling of one man who stood alone for the Living God.'

I had so much fun this summer reading books by Anthony Barbera. Catching Baby Moses, the third book, was more than I expected! I wasn't sure what to expect from the title of the book, but I was pleasantly surprised. I love the game of football (waiting for August can be rough for me!). This book was full of football! The main character is a teenage boy whose life you wouldn't give to your worst enemy. Through no fault of his own, he is left to basically fend for himself. The hero is a former professional football player who takes him under his wing (although reluctantly) because the boy can play football! I love the lessons each of them learns, even the most difficult lessons! (There are some lessons that make you very proud of this young man!) As with the other works by Anthony Barbera, one is drawn into the lives of each of the characters. This book is so good you wonder why someone hasn't made a movie of it yet! This is a story of honor, strength, and the intestinal fortitude of both the young man and his football mentor. I cried at the end. GREAT BOOK!

This book won my heart over. The characters were developed and described so well, I felt that I knew them. This was a can't-put-it-down read that left me the reader feeling a sense of happiness for justice and caring to win the day.

Life is terrible for more people than we would care to admit. And by that I mean that we are aware of their trouble but do not act on what we know. What if we actually did the right thing and put the needs of others above our wants. What if we made sure that our neighbors had food and their lawns were mowed when they couldn't do it themselves?

What if mean people were denied the ability to be mean because nice people did what they could to help out the people the mean people were being mean to in the first place?

What this man did was not exhaustive it was just simple kindness. All of us have some of that that we could spare.

I really cried over the life of this child. I was beyond angry at the innocent man being accused. I was angered that he was likely to be found guilty when we all knew he was innocent. How could all of this actually happen? How often does all of this actually happen?

The idea that he shared with this young boy of catching baby Moses was absolutely beautiful to me in relaying the importance of what he was looking to achieve. We are to do all things as if we are doing them for God and the simplicity of how this man lived was being shared with a young child who needed that truth and proof that he was valued and could really succeed in what he was naturally talented in doing.

I loved this book. I loved the characters... even the mean ones... because they were real and made the story matter.

I read the book in one day. I laughed and I cried and I even held my breath a few times. I highly recommend you read it. It will stay with for quite some time... at least I hope it will.
