- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2022It’s well done. Earlier iterations were rough around the edges, but a good editor makes ab heck of a difference. It’s nice to see sci-fi written in this on going tense. Like reading a movie. The nuanced sprinkles of comedy are a nice touch as well.
The author has a path before them that I believe will only brighten and improve with each release. It’s there, and it’s worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2021Action-packed for sure. No time to rest or get comfortable when reading this one! Very fast-paced and engaging. Some formatting errors as others have noted but nothing to get upset about. Recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2021Strong female lead? Yeah! Overall promising story? Yeah! Good horror book for upper grade students but first, it needs a serious editor who can cut down on the run-on sentences, the proper use of commas and a good spell check. The formatting of the book is awful and needs help as well. You might consider this a diamond in the rough.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021When you read this novella, you will find a lot to like, but then you hit a sentence that just doesn't make sense or that meanders into what should have been two or three sentences. I'm all for playing with the form and structure of the written word, but I don't think that is the intent here. The strength of the characters, particularly the female lead, makes it worth the read, and there is a really good story at its center, but this book sure could use an edit pass to make it more consistent.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2021Don't get me wrong the author is very promising. The protagonist is very likeable and thought out in my opinion. Overall this book needs a lot of work qhen it comes to sentence structure. It's almost annoying because the storyline is there ot just needs a polish
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021This book is a decent quick read. With a little more polish/editing/crafting, it would be a 4 or 5 star book. The story is well thought out and kept me engaged despite where the narrative meandered.
Overall, it is a quick read and if you like isolated rural horrors, and you've got the time, you might want to pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Mulch: The First Thrilling Novella from Maniacal Realms by Alex Mac is a gripping story set on a quiet tobacco farm in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The McLendon family—Roddy, his wife Misty, and their twins, Clem and Shem—live a simple life until one terrifying night changes everything. A loud crash shakes their home, and strange things begin happening. With no phone signals and no way to call for help, the family is left to face the unknown. Alex Mac does a great job of building suspense and keeping the reader hooked from the very first page.
The best part of Mulch is how real the characters feel. Roddy’s obsession with his TV, even during a crisis, adds a touch of humor that makes him relatable. Misty is strong and protective, doing her best to keep her family safe. Clem’s bravery and Shem’s innocence make you root for them as they face whatever danger is coming. Their reactions feel natural, and it’s easy to imagine being in their place, which makes the story even scarier.
The tension in the story keeps growing as the family tries to figure out what’s happening. The way the house shakes, the loud noises, and the eerie silence afterward create a sense of fear that sticks with you. Alex Mac paints a clear picture of the chaos, making it easy to feel the panic and confusion the family goes through. You can almost hear the strange sounds and feel the ground rumbling under your feet.
Mulch is a thrilling read that blends suspense, family drama, and unexpected moments of humor. It’s the kind of story that keeps you turning the pages because you need to know what happens next. If you enjoy a good mystery with a touch of horror, this book is definitely worth reading. Alex Mac has set a high standard for the Maniacal Realms series, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
