A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee PI Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Judy returned to her roots in the Appalachian supernatural thriller Dead Hollow trilogy (Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). Now she's back at work on the next Sydney Brennan book.

Judy writes from her home in rainy East Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SYDNEY BRENNAN: Many authors say their characters are their alter egos, doing the things they've always wanted to do in the ways they wish they could do them. At the risk of sounding shallow, my private investigator Sydney Brennan--with her shoulder-length, curly red hair--is my Hair Alter Ego. It's hard to tell from the ancient, faded, pre-digital photo at the right, but when I was very young I had red ringlets of curls. (And yes, shockingly, that is a book in my hands.) They never grew back after my first haircut, and my mother still laments their loss. The red hue is long gone and as for the curls, the best I can do now is a persistent cowlick and the occasional unruly wave.

A book with lots of character development and a good story. I like that the characters are real and believable. With each book in the series, the character of Sydney Brennan develops further and she grows as a person. I come to understand her mind and motives better. There are lots of reflections and the descriptive passages about the locations, situations and appearances of the other characters add a lot to the story. There are enough plot twists to keep it interesting and unpredictable. The combination of some old characters that recur from novel to novel and new ones unique to the current story are a good mix.The pace of the story picks up as the book progresses. I was able to read the first half at a leisurely pace but once I got to the heart of the story, I could hardly put it down. I think this is the best one of the series so far.

Ms. Walker' s words take hold slowly but relentlessly, never actually letting go after you're finished reading them. I wasn't able to put down the first book until I had finished reading it cover to cover, without stopping for coffee! The final four books in the series didn't disappoint either!
If the Sydney Brennan works are an indication of Ms. Walker's dog's regurgitation skills, Ms Walker needs to keep hitting the "publish" button!
Seriously great storytelling with just enough grit, humour and romanticism mixed together. I would recommend stopping for coffee (or tea) though!

I am in love with Sydney and all the characters, am very sad that I will have to wait for another book, Judy K. Walker is one of my new favorites, her humor reminds me of Janet Evanovich, the kind that surprises me and makes me laugh. I love someone with the same warped humor that I have.

I have now read, and enjoyed, all of the Sydney Brennan books to date, and this is my favorite -- the best so far. Both the characters and the plot are complex. And for us aged baby boomers, we get the bonus of a nostalgic backstory set in the Movement days of the 1960's.

I've read and thoroughly enjoyed all 5 of the Sydney Brennan series, but I think Braving the Vineyard was superb. I love the characters and their complicated relationships, the moral dilemmas, the action. And the nit-picky side of me loves that I don't remember seeing a single typo in any of Judy Walker's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious, hilarious but also serious, I LOVED that book

This is one of the best discoveries these last few years. The plot is great, the characters are awesome, it's totally believable even when it shouldn't be (lots of research), but the best thing is : it's not like anything else I've read (and I've read lots). I wish this series had ten more titles. The books can be read as standalones but I strongly recommend starting with the first one - if it's too much skip the novellas, who are worth four stars, which for me is a lot as usually hate novellas.
