To Love a Highland Laird: A Passionate Enemies to Lovers Scottish Highlander Historical Mystery Romance Adventure (Heart of a Scot Book 1) Kindle Edition
Mayra Findlay's hand was pledged in marriage to a stranger when she was an infant. But it's not until she meets an irresistible rogue she can't stop thinking about—or secretly meeting—that she realizes just how much she doesn't want an arranged marriage. She'll only marry for love. And if she has to concoct a risky, bold scheme to force her fiancé to call off their union, so be it...
Laird Logan Rutherford returned to Scotland to find little more than a near-bankrupt estate and Mayra's demands to dissolve their marriage contract. He knows he should give her the freedom she craves. But then he has a chance meeting with the intriguing lass, and he realizes that letting her go is the last thing he wants to do. Too bad he can't afford to tell her who he really is...
Mayra never intended to find a fairy tale, happily ever after ending with Logan. But will she want her Highland Laird when she discovers his secret?

From the Author
TO LOVE A HIGHLAND LAIRD is book one in my 9-book Heart of a Scot Series. When I decided to write a series set a century earlier than most of my other books, I knew I'd need to conduct extra research.
So, I toddled off to Scotland and learned as much as I could so that I could present an authentic tale. Yes, I sampled lots of shortbread, all in the name of research!
Mayra and Logan's story is a sweet romance of two people forced into a betrothal as children. Forced betrothals (those too young to make a decision themselves) and arranged marriages were the norm, particularly between families of station.
My favorite scene in this Highlander romance is when Logan arrives at a ball, attired in an ill-fitting suit of armor, but determined to win the hand of his lady-love none the less.
I hope the story makes you smile!
Hugs,
Collette

"Logan, my boy, ye sign here." Artair Rutherford pointed to an empty space below his and Laird Roderick Findlay's bold, slanted signature.
Och, cow turds.
Despite his frustration, Logan obediently propped his battered toy sword against the table's leg. After carefully dipping the quill into the inkwell, he lifted his uncertain gaze to his father.
"My full name, Da?"
"Aye, Son."
"And when I do, it means I must wed her? When I'm a mon?" He pointed the quill at a wee lassie in an elaborate wooden cradle, gnawing on her wet fist.
"Aye, lad." Inclining his head, Da patted Logan's shoulder, the gesture more prodding than reassuring. "She'll be yer wife."
Logan sucked in his cheeks and crimped his mouth, mutinously. "I dinna want to marry her."
What need have I for a wife? Da disna have one.
"Ye're no' actually marryin' her right now, Son," Da cajoled gently. "Ye're just agreein' to later, when ye're both adults."
That brought Logan a little relief. "I still dinna want to."
"It's a good match. A brilliant one, truth to tell." Bending over a little, Da put a hand on Logan's shoulder and peered intently into his eyes. "But more importantly, Son, the union benefits Scotland. Ye should be proud."
Findlay, Dunrangour's giant of a laird, snorted loud as a draft horse and shook his shaggy blond mane. "So say some."
Craning his neck, Logan gulped and took a reflexive step backward.
"Ever heard such a colossal jobby before, Fergus and Hamish?" Findlay bit out, his jaw muscles jumping and huge hands clenched into powerful balls.
Such a pile of shite?
Which part?
The stupid match or the benefitin' Scotland part?
A pair of Dunrangour clansmen acting as witnesses, their flinty gazes unyielding and faces granite hard, grunted and smirked their agreement.
"Nae, canna say I have, Findlay," the one called Hamish said, giving Da an evil scowl.
"And of course, Mayra's dowry--particularly the land portion--be of nae interest to ye, be it, Rutherford? But, ye canna touch either yet, can ye? No' until our children actually wed. And then it'll be the lad's to do with as he pleases, no' yers. How that must set yer teeth on edge and stick in yer greedy craw."
Findlay's low chuckle, more sinister than humorous, filled the tense silence. Satisfaction, or mayhap even gloating, tinged his words and ignited his vivid blue eyes.
Viking eyes.
Ruthless and cold and unforgiving.
Da said Dunrangour's laird was descended from the barbaric Norsemen, and Logan could well believe it.
His sweet-faced wife didn't join in his mirth. If anything, she hunched deeper into her chair, more distraught.
"Asinine requirin' me to provide half of the lass' marriage settlement now. Reeks of extortion." Findlay's hefty glower encompassed Da and Mr. Hyde, the king's agent.
Logan scrunched his forehead and mouth, gazing between the wrathful laird and his gentle lady.
Didn't they want this stupid troth thing either?
As a lad, he couldn't disobey Da's order, but they were grown-ups. And adults could do what they wanted.
Why didn't they just say no then?
He'd be well-pleased if they did.
He looked at the slobbering baby again and couldn't prevent his lip curling.
Reddish brows drawn into such a severe vee they almost touched, Da glared hard at Findlay until Logan's tugging on his coat finally drew his father's attention.
"What's a cowry, Da?"
"Dowry." His father's stern features softened a wee bit. "It's a legal token promisin' ye and the lass will wed."
A sneer curled Findlay's mouth as he crossed his thick arms and planted a bulging shoulder against the fireplace. "I'd call it extortion and a forced match between a wee six-year-old lad and an infant lass. Neither of which have any say in their futures."
"Give careful thought to yer words, Findlay. Some might consider them and yer attitude treasonous. Ye wouldna want a hint of anythin' untoward to reach His Majesty's ears, would ye now?" Mr. Hyde, tsked disapprovingly, his eyes gone squinty and suspicious. His pointy nostrils even twitched in reproach.
Like a giant wharf rat.
Logan pinched his nose and pointed his face away. Reeking of dirty feet, stale sweat, and rotting teeth, the agent stank worse than Leith's docks.
Lady Findlay had raised her handkerchief to her nose several times as well.
"Go ahead, sign, and be quick about it," Da urged Logan. "We need to be on our way."
Rebellion pounded against Logan's ribs, and he thrust out his lower lip.
Something about this didn't feel right--made him slightly afraid and his tummy waffy.
Like when he awoke during the middle of the night and the castle was too quiet. Too ghostly and strange. And he lay alone in his chamber with only his sword and a carved dog for protection. Too scared to move or rise, but just as terrified to stay buried beneath the weighty bedcoverings.
"Why do I have to wed her? Why canna someone else?" Logan veered the fretting bairn another troubled glance, and leaning toward Da, whispered, "She's no' verra bonnie."
"Yer king asks it of ye, lad. As do I." Da indicated where Logan should sign again.
So he must marry a strawberry-faced, drooling baby for a prissy king he'd never met?
Unfair!

Mayra Findlay and Logan Rutherford were betrothed when she was an infant and he was a young boy. They only saw each other a few times after the betrothal. Several years pass. Logan has no plans to follow through on the marriage and Mayra wants to break the contract because of Logan's lack of communication over the years. Upon his father's death Logan finds out the estate is destitute and the half of the dowry given at the signing of the betrothal contract is now gone due to the spending habits of his vile stepmother. He realizes that he has no option but to follow through on the marriage to Mayra otherwise the dowry would need to be returned. His solution is to marry and use the other half of the dowry to rescue his estate. Mayra's father passed away and due to hard times for her mother and herself and others nearby, they cut back on living standards. Mayra hopes if she can get her betrothal contract canceled she can use the portion of the estate set aside for her dower to restore their circumstances.
Mayra was greatly protected through the years and not allowed much freedom. She makes trips into the nearby village, usually with an attendant, and on one visit she meets a handsome stranger. On following visits she manages to further her acquaintance with the stranger. Unbeknown to Mayra, the handsome gentleman she has been seeing is none other than Logan, her betrothed, who assumed the name of his cousin to hide his identity. He wanted to find out more about Mayra and what type of person she had become before he makes the final decision to marry her, even though he knows he must marry her to avoid paying back the half dowry.
Oh, what tangled webs are woven. Mayra ends up falling in love with her gentleman, aka Logan, as he does her. Once Mayra finds out the truth, she needs to resolve what she feels was a betrayal by Logan, and Logan needs to convince her that they are meant to be together. Ms.Cameron pulls it all together and our couple finds their HEA. I do wish the story had been a little longer.

She hasn't heard from her betrothed but a couple of time in her life and she doesn't want to be married to someone who doesn't take time to at least write her back when her parents make her write to him.
How can they make it work???
He poses as his cousin and falls head over heels in love with her and she does him, but she feels guilty because she is supposed to be married to another.
A funny, twist and turns, up and down story that will make you sit and read until you finish it......
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2019When they meet for the first time since they were children, Logan Rutherford decides that the best way to get to know his betrothed Mayra and what she is like is to pretend to be his cousin Coburn. From here the plot gets a little complicated. He should have given this idea more thought.
To Love a Highland Rogue is a heartwarming and humorous Highland romance, a wonderful beginning to Collette’s new Heart of a Scot series. I love the way Mayra and Logan are portrayed. She is a sweetheart, kind and caring. Logan still has a lot of the six-year-old boy in him. The dialogue is sharp and witty. As with all of Collette’s books the story flows along, entertaining from start to finish.

A story of one man betrothed at a young age who finds himself falling for the betrothed he was uncertain of and a woman so desperate to end a betrothal to a man she did not know and thought was a Fop. A good sweet read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2019To Love a Highland Laird is book one in Collette Cameron’s Heart of a Scot series. I adore Cameron’s writing. She infuses wit, hilarious banter and sweetly spiced romance into all of her stories. I loved the characters in this book. Logan Rutherford is the dreamy Highlander promised in marriage as a young child to Mayra Findlay. But years pass and their separation brings Mayra to a state of desperation to end the neglected betrothal. A chance meeting brings them back together again - but Logan deceives Mayra and disguises himself by using another name. “He cocked his russet head, and his eyes, an unusual but enthralling shade between summer moss and toasted almonds, glinted merrily at her. An unhurried smile bent his strong lips, revealing a charming dimple on his left cheek and further crimping the corner of his twinkling eyes.” This is just another triumph for Cameron. I’m looking forward to the rest of the books in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2019Mayra vaguely remembers meeting her betrothed. Now, she must somehow break the betrothal. Unfortunately, he will not respond to any of her letters. Logan must marry and marry soon. He has no wish to honor the marriage contract signed by his father, but, since his father spent all of the money-he has no choice. He meets Mayra and gives her a fake name-the name of his cousin. As the two talk, flirt and fall in love, Mayra is contemplating just how to break her betrothal so that she can marry this man with whom she has fallen in love. Logan must figure out a way to confess to this wonderful woman that he is in fact the dreaded fiance. Fun read with a great ending.

This is a triumphant first book in what promises to be a great series. This plot is one full of emotion and unwarranted fears. It's a story that gets a bit spicy at the end, and has characters who are portrayed with the courage and determination to grab their desires.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but entertaining
An enjoyable story that was too short. There was too much descriptive detail which made the book take longer to read than normal for me. Also, not a lot happened in the story. The ending was particularly rushed - it could have benefited with a chapter about Logan meeting Mayra's family or their wedding. However, I liked the storyline and the characters.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely read more from her.
