Editorial Reviews

Review

"Venal sin is not new to the Catholic Church, but inVictoria M. Patton's engaging crime novel, CONFESSION OF SIN, it goes to aheinous, new level: a serial killer of 'failed' priests is on the looseand homicide detective Damien Kaine and his partner Joe Hagan must battle notonly a deeply disturbed killer with a surprising background but a secret-holdingCatholic Church which only hinders solving an escalating wave of priestkillings. Patton brings her patented skills in forensic crime to thispowerful and rare tale of how belief can become murderous. It tests allKaine's powers in a read that is at once involving and shocking. Highlyrecommended."

Victoria M. Patton uses her time in the Coast Guard and her Forensic Chemistry degree to craft the perfect murders. But since she is averse to wearing orange and being in prison, she keeps her murderous sprees between the pages of her books.

She has several published novels which include her Damien Kaine thriller series and her Derek Reed paranormal thriller series. She describes her books as dark, sexy, edgy mashups of CSI, Motive, and Criminal Minds.

Inspired by her cat Pumpkin’s advice on storytelling, her novels are not cozy mysteries and not for the faint of heart.

Murder novels set in the Catholic Church make me queasy - it's so easy for authors to go overboard and preachy (to either side). This is a well executed tale with horrific murders, nicely developed characters and a bit of hot sex to spice up the recipe. Everyone took a firm step forward from book one and it's nice to read an author who is building a universe with legs.

The second book in the series is better than the first. Probably as much swearing, profanities and sex, but the story is better developped and suspenseful. I blew through it in one weekend. The characters are likeable and more realistic than many other hero stories.
Improvements would be to get the correct translations for the Italian language used and the characters don't need to drink alcohol every day of the week. Some additional editing would not hurt, correct use of commas and such.

Lieutenant Damien Kaine and Detective Joe Hagan are trying to have lives outside of their work, but when priests in Chicago’s Catholic diocese start dying by truly gruesome means, finding the person responsible takes priority.

To complicate things, the VCU, led by Damien, is also on the hunt for several families who have gotten sideways of a drug cartel. The clock is ticking to find the women and children before the cartel does.

This is a fast-paced story filled with intricate, gut wrenching descriptions of the murdered priests. Victoria M. Patton is genius at balancing the vivid descriptions of the murdered victims with the necessary comic relief at exactly the time the reader is beginning to consider fasting as a lifestyle. And, Coach the Cat is still capturing our hearts.

This is a highly recommended read for anyone who enjoys crime fiction.Very much looking forward to future offerings of this author.

The theme of the book is violent, good if one likes thrillers/mysteries. The language is beyond foul and takes away from the storyline. A well placed curse word is understood , but this is over the top. A “devout catholic” which can’t have a sentence without cursing is beyond belief. Also, she is living in dreamland as to the sexual escapes.
