Whiskey and Ink (Fia Drake, Soul Hunter Book 2) Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

The hunt is on: who is the predator; who is the prey?

Convents, crossbows, and creeps—all in a day’s work when it comes to hunting damned souls. Quick-witted and always on the go, Fia Drake’s whole life has revolved around independence.
Now that independence is being threatened. First it was a fiery phoenix breaking through her window. Now, it’s a shimmering winged being beckoning her back to the community she left in her teens. Worse yet, she is asked to become a mentor to a new generation of soul hunters.
If it were up to her, she would just skip town.
Unfortunately, two complications prevent her from leaving:
Complication #1: A message from the tarot reveals someone close is plotting against her, and the best way to uncover a traitor is to stand by their side.
Complication #2: The drummer in her bed isn’t going away. Max Hawkins, her unrelenting knight in scuffed sneakers, refuses to let her fight alone.
With a shot of liquid courage and a blessed tattoo, can Fia work out who’s hunting her—or will it all end in flames?

Editorial Reviews

Review

Whiskey and Ink is emotive, sometimes sexual, and as with its predecessor, packed with mystery.

Fia Drake is the kind of heroine who punches you in the gut and you gladly ask for more. Whiskey and Ink, the second installment of the Fia Drake, Soul Hunter series, delivers that gut punch from beginning all the way to the end, which leaves you begging for book three.

About the Author

What began with a princess captured by a pirate and rescued by a dragon has developed into D. Gabrielle Jensen's lifelong fascination with stories of the unexpected and unexplored. She has dabbled across many styles and genres, but whether through startling, staccato works of pulp horror or the dirt and grime of urban fantasy, she always finds her way back to speculative fiction. An award-winning bestseller, D. is built from drum-beats and hot asphalt. Even as an imaginative child in the rural mountains of Colorado, she felt pulled to the chaos and clamor of The City-any city, every city. With this in mind, she aims to infuse her work with mortar and music. Her favorite views of any city are from the rooftops and the side streets. She strives to show the beauty of both in her stories, urging you to walk the streets with her as she introduces you not only to powerful heroines and antiheroines but to the buskers, bartenders, and baristas who make up the fabric of every city. If writing be her first love, music is the trusted friend D. turns to when that love forgets her birthday. She can sing along with new songs before they've finished playing and set up a drum kit blindfolded. She can't remember a time when she didn't know how to play her parents' vinyl records. She has one Spotify playlist (out of many) that can run for two full days without repeat and an active hatred for paperless concert tickets. She works that love of music into her writing through allusions to lyrics in imagery, characters named after songs and musicians, and behind-the-scenes playlists. She will even write to a metronome if she needs to give a scene just the right cadence. D. loves things that begin with the letter C-coffee, cats, cities, conversation, concerts-and things that don't-airports, humans, macrophotography, urban decay, macro-photography of urban decay, and the beauty of flaw. She encourages everyone to join her across social media and on Patreon. Strike up a conversation. Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

From the time she was old enough to form such bold opinions, D. Gabrielle Jensen has loved good music and robust storytelling, hated the sound of her government name, and yearned for the commotion and serenity of a major metropolis. She has won writing awards she forgot about long ago, and college was a string of 4 a.m. discussions and Greek mixers so she filed all of that away as inconsequential.

Out in the wild, D. can be found roaming rooftops and alleyways with her camera, screaming in the front row of a concert, or on the hunt for a damn fine cup of coffee. Or just hanging out at home with her cat. Follow her online, strike up a conversation, and she’ll gladly take all those black jellybeans off your hands.

ARC Review Whiskey and Ink (Fia Drake, Soul Hunter Book 2) by D. Gabrielle Jensen

I am going to say from my point of view if you like the show Supernatural, you will love this series.

The more Fia I get to read, the more I want to know. As we go through this book, we learn more about her as she discovers more about herself. She is forced into many uncomfortable situations that she has fought to stay out of. She finds Max is in it for the long hall which makes her so afraid of him getting hurt. He is trying to be the man she needs and figure out if he can do that himself. She becomes a mentor to young hunters and gets to know the nuns she knew as a child from an adult point of view as she works with them. She finds out one of her allies is way more than she thought. She must find out about the phoenix who broke in, who is hunting her and how to be a good mentor/girlfriend.

There are so many amazing things in this story that I am going to reread it again to see what I missed.

The best part is you can start here, then read Drummers and Demons (Fia Drake, Soul Hunter Book 1) and Mark of the Hunter in Dragon Within: Claiming Her Wings.

    I had access to ARC.
I loved reading this installment of the Mark of the Hunter series, I was so excited for it to finally be available for everyone!
Whiskey and Ink is a perfect continuation of Fia Drake's story which we were introduced to in Drummers and Demons.
We learn more about Fia's crazy past, we see Max dive head-first into a world that he just accepts as totally normal, we meet new characters, and we get to know some "old" ones.
    I highly recommend!

Once again, D. Gabrielle Jensen has gripped my interest like few have. The second book in The Soul Hunter series is clearly better than the first, with more action and depth. The character development is more pronounced and we deep deeper still into the mind of our beloved Fia Drake. The pacing is absolutely on point and I was left breathing deeply more than once. I am anxiously awaiting book three and wish I didn't have to wait so long.

Very exciting story so far! I can't wait to see what happens next. I love how hard Max tries to support and ground Fia. There is a great cast of interesting and well developed Characters. Zari, Father Scott and Sister Agnes are some of my other favourites! Definitely give this series a try!
