To Woo a Highland Warrior: A Passionate Enemies to Lovers Scottish Highlander Historical Mystery Romance Adventure (Heart of a Scot Book 4) Kindle Edition
Baron Liam Mackay lost everything he ever loved. Now, he protects his heart behind a carefully constructed wall of indifference, refusing to actually feel anything. He'll focus instead on making sure his feudal barony is prosperous and simply avoid all marriage-minded women. Then he saves a lovely temptress from certain death, and all his well-laid plans completely fall apart...
Hired assassins don't target illegitimate orphans. Or so Emeline LeClaire thought, until it happened to her. But when a handsome Highlander steps in to save her, she can't help but feel that perhaps fate brought them together. Perhaps she can help save his wounded heart and soul just as he saved her life...When a flash flood strands them together, can Emeline convince Liam to trust in love...and in her? Or will they remain star-crossed forever?

From the Author
Every once in awhile, when I'm writing a book, the characters touch me emotionally more than usual. TO WOO A HIGHLAND WARRIOR is one of those romances. Don't get me wrong; I adore ALL of my characters. However, there was something about Liam and Emeline that deeply affected me.
Perhaps it was because they are such wounded, broken souls, and yet at their cores, both are generous, giving, and hungry for love. My stories are character-driven, meaning my heroes and heroines choose their paths, the direction the story will take, and how they arrive at their happily ever afters.
Liam and Emeline took me down a few turns I hadn't seen coming, but I think their love story is all the better for it. I hope you do too.
You get a sneak-peek at Emeline in TO REDEEM A HIGHLAND ROGUE and TO SEDUCE A HIGHLAND SCOUNDREL. You also meet Kendra MacKay and and Broden McGregor in TO WOO A HIGHLAND WARRIOR. Their romance, TO ENCHANT A HIGHLAND EARL, is next up in my Heart of a Scot series.
Happy reading!
Hugs,
Collette

Scottish Highlands
Early September 1720
A hair-raising scream rent the late afternoon's soggy air, wrenching Liam MacKay, Baron of Penderhaven, from his melancholy musings. He snorted in derision. When, in these past five years, weren't his reflections melancholic? Macabre even?
Astride Deri--so named for the gelding's metallic-shaded coat--he reflexively clasped the dirk at his waist as the pulverizing wind caught the merest wisp of another frantic cry. Pulling his spine straighter, all of his senses acutely alert, he squinted through the deluge pelting him and methodically scrutinized the surrounding woodlands.
From whence had the shout come?
Close by, for certain.
Eyes narrowed, he scratched his beard and made a thorough, circular study of the area once more. The tangy scent of sodden earth and the sharp, almost pungent, odor of the shrewish tempest met his flared nostrils.
With the furious squall buffeting the thrashing trees and the torrential rain hammering the drenched ground--not to mention the periodic deafening booms of thunder hard on the heels of each lightning streak illuminating the heavens--he couldn't quite discern the person's location or gender. Another incandescent purplish flash divided the bruise-colored sky, immediately followed by an earth-shaking explosion in the firmaments.
God's teeth, what a gale.
In his one and thirty years, he didn't recall a more sudden or violent thunderstorm. The ground was still hard and arid from an unusually warm summer, and water gushed down the craggy hillside eager to reach the riotous, brown river below.
More than once, Deri had slid on the slick slope. If there'd been lodgings to be had this past hour, Liam would've sought its refuge straightaway.
Traveling in this sorry weather was stupid, plain-and-simple. But halting and risking the elements might prove worse with the trees snapping like kindling all around Liam. Unrelenting stinging rain pellets lashed his face, giving no hint of reprieve anytime soon either.
For the past three hours, the powerful thunderstorm raging overhead had battered the Highlands. Which explained why he'd chosen to ride beneath the flailing branches above rather than chance the open road a few hundred yards away.
Quite simply, there was far less risk of lightning striking him amongst the trees than upon the unprotected track paralleling the river. However, in these woodlands, a much greater risk of being taken down by a falling tree existed.
Odin's teeth. Damned if he did and damned if he didn't. A no-win situation. Caught between the coals and the cookpot.
Head angled as he strained to hear above the storm, he pushed his saturated hair off his forehead. Another terrified shriek--definitely feminine--echoed through the Scots pine forest, curdling his blood and raising his nape hair as well as causing his horse to sidestep and snort nervously.
"Easy, lad. Shh." He hugged his knees to the gelding's sides, giving him a reassuring pat on the neck. Whoever the woman was, he couldn't ignore her terrified cries. He stroked the horse again. "Dinna fash yerself, my friend."
"Unhand me, vous monstre!"
Monster and in French to boot?
"Help! Help! Mon Dieu. Somebody, help us, S'il vous plait." The last broke on a ragged sob barely audible above the thunder reverberating violently in the angry pewter sky.
What in Odin's toes was a French woman doing in this isolated stretch of the Highlands, in this godawful weather, and screaming for help? To be fair, the storm had developed quite suddenly, and the nearest inn was miles away.
Nonetheless, his warrior's instinct pinged an urgent warning.
And the Frenchwoman had said, "us." Meaning more than one person was in some sort of danger. Hell, anyone outside in this hell-fired gale was in peril.
"Mon Dieu, non. Non." The plaintive wail broke through a pause in the storm's tumult.
Desperate. Defeated. Disbelieving.
Swearing a steady stream of expletives beneath his breath, Liam reined Deri in the direction of the heart-rending plea and put his heels to the horse's sides. At once, the steed surged forward, pounding toward God only knew what. Liam erupted through the towering trees, momentarily taken aback at the bazaar scene before him.
A traveling coach angled across the middle of the mucky road, its door flung wide open. Two men, legs splayed and their bearing menacing, stood near the front of the vehicle. The coachmen?
A pair of dripping-wet women huddled together a few feet away, the taller with her arm wrapped protectively around the smaller woman's shoulders. Even from where he'd exited the woodlands, he couldn't miss the diminutive woman's violent quaking.
One driver gleefully brandished a pair of blunderbusses.
Christ on the cross.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2020To Woo A Highland Warrior is book four in the Heart of a Scot Series by Collette Cameron. I adored this book! I think I fell in love with the braw Scottish hero Liam MacKay. Liam appears in the previous books in this series, so I was thrilled to finally get to read his story. It sizzles! The heroine is Emeline LeClaire. She is also a secondary character in a previous book. I liked Emeline’s gentle personality. The sexual tension between Liam and Emeline is so thick that I found I couldn’t put the book down. I read it in one afternoon. “When he smiled...Lord help her. It was as if the sun dropped from the heavens and lit the room. He transformed from wildly rugged to downright beautiful. It was all she could do not to gawk like a green schoolgirl.” I can’t wait for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2021I was hooked in the first few pages with the description of the rain, thunder, lightning & Liam, a Highland Laird coming upon hired men killing a lady & attempting to murder another. Liam rescues Emeline - they run from a flash flood - must take shelter in a hunting hut for several days. Liam promises he will see her safe & he will figure out who is after her & why. They must go through many obstacles to get a HEA - Liam's past ghosts, Em's danger & mystery threats, and admitting feelings. This was a sweet, exciting, well-written book with a lovable couple that you root for from the beginning. I highly recommend this book & the entire series!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2020Both Emeline LeClaire and Liam MacKay are having a dangerous and busy day. As Liam MacKay makes his way home, he finds Emeline and her aunt being attacked. He is able to stave off (kill) the attackers and rescue Emeline, but is too late to save her aunt. The excitement is not over. Before he can determine what happened and get the mess cleaned up, a flash flood forces them to run for safety. They are stranded in a lodge until the roads are safe to travel. They are attracted to each other. Liam’s tragic past and their current troubles might make romance impossible.
When they finally arrive at Liam’s home, attention is turned to the attack on Emeline and her aunt. Graeme Kennedy brings information that takes them to Edinburgh to seek answers. They are joined by family and a group of friends, all the big hunky heroes from the previous stories in the series. Who wants Emeline dead, and why? This band of determined protective Highlanders are sure to unravel the mystery.
This is an exciting story. Danger, drama, mystery, murder, surprises and revelations. Liam and Emeline make a great couple. They don’t realize it at first, but they need each other. Their adventure in Edinburgh is a breath-holder. Their romance is an adventure in itself.
An intense and captivating story with fantastic characters and a beautiful epilogue to wrap it all up makes this one not to miss.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2023A very sweet, relatively clean and interesting romance. There’s wit, there’s action, an there’s the requisite family villain. A great read when one’s not feeling well.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2024I didn’t think this book would out do book three but it did and more! This is a great series and I can’t wait to read book 5.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2022I give 3 stars in regard to books in general, but in its genre I’d give it 4 stars if not for the reason listed below. The book is good enough: good plot, good story flow, interesting believable characters, enough intrigue, etc.! but every chapter, almost every page/line gives adjectives describing the h’s/H’s eyes: doe, amber, warm dark honey, caramelized sugar, treacle, whiskey colored, gold flecked, brilliant rich-brandy, stunning umber colored, turbulent umber, dark honey (h’s), and several describing the H’s. That was very irritating! I got the point of her (especially) eye color without it being described every single time.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2020I was so tickled to have a new historical romance to read when I got the announcement of Collette’s latest story. I adored Emeline, an impoverished, supposedly illegitimate, young woman living and working with her aunt as a modiste in Edinburgh. And then came along a flash flood, upsetting their traveling coach and killing her aunt, Emeline’s subsequent rescue by Liam, a sad widower baron, and the reluctant courtship between Emeline and Liam as they both healed from sad pasts and tried to solve the mystery of the attempt on Emeline’s life by persons as yet unknown. As always in Collette’s stories, there is a happy ever after ending and I find it hard to wait for Collette’s next story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2020I didn't care how the h didn't seem to be sad over the death of someone close to her. She went from sad, to glad she could live an independent life, in a few heart beats. After all that she asks the H how he got his scar. She just had a horrendous experience and that is what she wants to know? Not who wanted to do her harm? I guess I could contribute it to shock, but this wasn't mentioned. It took me awhile to feel any warmth from the h.
The H had great loss in his life and didn't want to marry or feel close to anyone ever again.
The story really picks up with suspense and intrigue in the last half of the book. So much was kept from the h and it was one twist after another.
I enjoyed the epilogue and we have lovemaking within marriage, heat level 1.5 out of 5, if that. We have no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, some romance and a tad of spice. (ljb)

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful continuation to the series
This is a wonderfully written continuation to this amazing series. All the characters in this plot which gets a bit spicy towards the end, are brilliantly crafted, and the story has an air of a thriller which will keep you engaged all the way through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting easy reading
A bit different from many of the Highland stories. It was a bit slow in places and a bit of an obvious ending but worth a read
- Sandra WReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2020
5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure cloaked in danger, rich in detail & highly charged with warring emotion & seductive allure
This one gripped me in it's vivid detail and zapped me straight into the drama of a heart-pounding tragic opening and kept me riveted with suspense, intimate and raw emotion and touching revelations. Cameron has cleverly crafted a fun, conspiracy led plot that flows smoothly and stays with you a long time after the last word, which I must say, despite loving and being invested to the point of addiction with so many other books, I often find I can't remember much of the tale days after but that is satisfyingly not the case in To Woo a Highland Warrior. Cameron's vibrant depictions keep pleasurably running through my thoughts as if mini movies - the delectable intimacy and heart-wrenchingly touching moments shared by Liam and Emeline in the hunting cabin and the pair's heart stopping first encounter to name but two.
A well thoughtout plot, embellished with dazzling characters that seduce with their kindness, stomach zinging chemistry, wit, resourcefulness, and all-consuming enticement to protect. With the added excitement of danger lurking in the shadows to keep you strumming with delicious tension, this touching story marks a definite favourite for me in this highly enjoyable and much recommended series so far; loved every second of it!!!
