From the Author
I never know what interesting tidbits I'll come across while researching and writing my romances. One of the things that frequently is asked of me is why I choose to use the specific Scots-speak that I do in my Scottish historicals.
I attempt to insert just enough to give the story the flare I want without bogging down the tale. I think of it like seasoning when I cook. A little enhances the flavor, but too much is unpalatable. I also defer to my editor's suggestions since producing the best book possible for my readers is of utmost importance.
Broden and Kendra appear for all the world like they can't stand one another, yet beneath their outward hostility, attraction sizzles. It takes Kendra saving Broden's life to force them past the walls they've barricaded to protect themselves.
As you'll find for yourself when you read their Highland adventure, the story contains a dash of intrigue and suspense and a pinch of humor, too.
Happy reading!
Hugs,
Collette

Scottish HighlandsMid-January 1721
Clenching the wadded letter tightly in his fist, Broden pivoted on his heels and tramped the reverse path across the smooth flagstone floor. His boot heels rapped dully off the book-laden shelves and the dark paneled walls of the masculine chamber acting as his library, private sitting room, and study.
His heartbeat whooshed in his ears, a peculiarly muffled tempo, like someone striking a drum covered by a thick pile of blankets.
The fire in the hearth sizzled as occasional droplets of rain survived the treacherous descent down the chimney only to splutter to a quick death. Outside, a deluge poured from the contemptuous pewter-gray clouds as the biting winter wind assailed everything in its path with unrelenting resolve to pummel and saturate.
He supposed he ought to be grateful it wasn't snowing.
A particularly powerful gust buffeted the sturdy rectangular stone house, causing the windowpanes to rattle and the unremarkable man sitting at Broden's desk to cast a wary glance out the rain-splattered glass.
No doubt, Mr. Philibius Oswald, Solicitor, worried about his return journey to Eddleshaugh.
As well, he should.
If the weather remained this dismal--a savvy chap would wager on it--Oswald would be obliged to take a room at one of Eddleshaugh's inns. After he and the sorry nag he'd arrived upon had slogged the almost two miles to the township. At this juncture, the much-traveled tracks to Edinburgh and then London would be impassable if the torrent kept up. Given the ashen sky, that seemed certain.
After all, this was January in the Highlands. One could expect rain and snow. Snow and rain. Then more of the same.
Every bit as certain as the intractable weather's continuation was another simple fact: Broden wouldn't extend his hospitality and offer the attorney a bed for the night. Or two or three if the tempest lingered. Not after learning why Oswald had stupidly--Sassenach idiot--braved the storm and called unannounced.
An entirely different sort of storm brewed within the cozy study, though no less fierce or ruthless in its fury. As Broden struggled to accept the life-altering news he'd just received--Goddammit to hell--anger and disbelief vied for supremacy in every pore. Pores humming and pulsating and expanding in a silent, but raucous chorus of strain and vexation.
And the news... A groan of despair almost escaped past his meshed lips. News he'd never conceived nor expected to hear; not in a hundred--no, a thousand--lifetimes.
God's hairy ballocks, he swore irreverently to himself.
Surely, it was a gargantuan mistake. An enormous, colossal error. A careless clerical blunder or a misprint on some long-ago faded, forgotten, and fusty kirk registry. Someone, somewhere had to have made a mistake.
He could not be--most assuredly did not wantto be--the next Earl of Montforth. Plowing his free hand through his hair, he dislodged the ribbon that kept it tied in a queue at his nape. Earl or not, he wasn't donning a ridiculous curling wig or powdering his hair for anyone.
He was not a mincing fop.
"There's nae one else to inherit?" he demanded of the solicitor, aware but beyond caring that the man simply performed his duties.
Dinna kill the messenger and all that twaddin' shite.
The silent reminder to himself did nothing to lessen his ire. His helplessness. The acerbic frustration. The unequivocal feeling of being trapped. Ensnared. Imprisoned.
He jabbed a finger toward the man of law, idly noting the dirt packed beneath his nails. Earls didn't have dirty fingernails. Or hands. Neither did they muck out stalls, move rocks from grazing and farm the land, or chop their own firewood.
"Ye're absolutely--without a single doubt--positive ye havena made a mistake?" he asked.
Oswald vacillated for a long blink, his Adam's apple rapidly cresting and sinking like a miniature boat caught upon the tidal surges of a massive, violent storm. And his tiny ship was about to flounder.
"There is another distant English cousin," the fusty attorney reluctantly confessed. His eyebrows--wiry copperish things with minds of their own and with an unfortunate proclivity to wriggle about on his forehead--huddled together over the pronounced bridge of his beaked nose.
"Aye? And?" Broden encouraged, grasping at even the weakest straw. Anything to keep him from plummeting into the loony world of the aristocracy.
"In truth, he's already contacted me in anticipation--" Oswald faltered, realizing he'd disclosed confidential information, and his nervous gaze bounced about the room, landing everywhere but on Broden.
So, the other chap thought to inherit.
Interesting.
Convenient?
Could such a blessed thing be arranged?
Suddenly finding the well-thumbed documents before him of acute interest, Mr. Philibius Oswald cleared his throat. "But you, my lord, are indisputably the next in line. I informed him as much, unequivocally. You needn't fear he'll supersede you."
"How did he take it?"

"God's hairy ballocks, he swore irreverently to himself. Surely, it was a gargantuan mistake. An enormous, colossal error was all Broden could think with the news the Sassenach idiot solicitor had brought him."
Scottish highlander Broden had inherited and English Earldom of all things! Earl of Montford and could only ask was there not someone else in line? Of course there was distant English cousin, Edwin who could only inherit if he died. Now he was left with an estate, a widow and her five daughters to take care of!
Kendra was taking a ride to the village when, of all people, there he was, "exuding masculine grace atop Sheik, Broden's light chestnut gelding." No, he had hurt her with his comments when she was younger and had such a crush on him. She was determined to ignore how those muscular thighs and wide shoulders affected her. But then Kendra saw a man taking aim and he shot Broden!
The adventure begins and all I can say is Collette Cameron is at her best with her descriptions and words that always bring a chuckle. Her wit is beyond delightful, she truly has no equal, as she expertly combines the serious with the lighthearted to bring about a remarkable storyline that always pulls me, no yanks me in. With beloved characters, the main and additional, there is never a doubt she will leave us with a sigh as we turn the last page. Love, Love, Love.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020I enjoyed how the story unfolded and we are given little spinets how they reacted to each other when they were younger.
This is a couple who got on each other nerves but feelings started to blossom. The didn't suspect the other felt the same so neither made a move until something brings them together and they see each other in a different light.
I must admit, didn't see all the villains and was totally surprised - good job Collette! I love when I am thrown for a loop (no spoiler's). I thought for sure I knew who the villain was, then she slips in a statement half way through and I just knew again who it was!
There is lovemaking, outside of marriage and heat level 1 out of 5. Just enough passion that you knew they loved each other.
We are treated to suspense, mystery, romance that builds slowly, HEA, tad of spice, no cheating and no cliffhanger. I enjoy this series. This is a stand alone, but it was nice catching up with some of the character's from previous stories. The Epilogue was amazing and loved how we catch up with them and their family a few years in the future.
I recommend this story and more importantly this author. (ljb).
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020This story keeps your interest while moving at a quick pace. Broden has to learn how to be an Earl, figure out how to court his best friends sister and figure out who wants him dead. There is humor, sadness and joy throughout the book. It is a novel that leaves you smiling.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2020Broden McGregor, a largely built and attractive Scot, has just learned that he has inherited an English earldom from a non Scottish branch of his rather crooked family tree. One might think he’d be thrilled-what with a new title, properties, and wealth. But he’s not exactly excited, and someone else isn’t either.
Fortunately for Broden, the lovely younger sister of his best friend, Kendra Mackay, happens to be in the right place at just the right time to assist him when he’s caught by surprise by his new enemy. Kendra is lovely, but for years the two of them have been like oil and water, they don’t mix well, despite their secret mutual attraction.
These two, and a group of other characters are pulled into a tale of mystery to protect Broden and those he cares about while determining just who wants him out of the way.
I really enjoyed this light hearted romantic mystery, and read it from start to finish. I recommend it for an afternoon curled up on a couch with a truly fun read. It is part of a series by this author, that’s entertaining as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2023I enjoyed reading this book.
Broken & Kendra were wonderful characters.
I love reading Collette Cameron's books, she has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat.
I am looking forward to reading Marjorie & Keane's story next in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020To Enchant a Highland Earl is book five in the Heart of a Scot series by Collette Cameron. Cameron has become one of my very favorite romance authors. She knows how to weave a story with humor and heartache. Although this is book five in the Heart of a Scot Series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Kendra MacKay is a wonderful character. I liked her vulnerability and her humor. As a little girl, Kendra overheard Broden McGregor the hero make a snide remark about her weight. She has carried the hurt of that insult into womanhood and it has become a grudge keeping him at arm’s length. That situation is so relatable! All of us have suffered wounds as children. And those wounds unless dealt with affect our relationships and our view of ourselves. Cameron does a superb job of peeling back the layers of her characters and letting us see what is actually underneath the surface - vulnerable, empathetic people. I loved the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Earl Enchanted Me
Broden McGregor did not want to be an earl. But he now is one and it is an English title. And he is now encumbered with the care of his predecessor’s wife and her young daughters. As he travels to inform his friend, Liam McKay, he is shot. Liam’s sister Kendra had just met with Broden and manages to take him to her home where he recuperates. Neither had liked each other in the past, but, as Broden recuperates they come to an understanding and become betrothed.
This book is full of action, with one absolutely brilliant scene where one of the villains of the tale is discovered to be a rather nasty person. This takes place at the English seat and it had me rooting for Broden and Kendra.
This is a worthy addition to the Heart of a Scot series, with the usual beautiful flow of the written word that Collette treats us to time after time after time. Another novella worthy of five stars for its plot, full characters, language and jolly good entertainment.

This is another great story that is a delightful addition to this brilliant series. This plot which gets a bit steamy towards the end is full of amazing characters, and has a bit of a thriller about it.
