- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2021Fourteen years ago Ember Slove survives a fire, carried out by her mother, leaving her stepfather Phil’s motionless body behind as flames raged and burned their house. Neither the child nor her mother, Karma, missed Phil, “a bad man, who did many bad things.” Ember’s working in a bar now, thinking maybe one day she’ll meet a nice guy, one who’s the opposite of Phil. But it’s not Brent Billows. He is burned alive in an abandoned warehouse. Is it arson? Or a murder? Jeff Jenkins is assigned to the case along with Martin. But there are other deaths. Who is the murderer? A fast-paced read that’ll keep you turning the pages!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2021Lots of twists and turns with this one, clues pointing every which way until the very end. I think that the confusion made it hard for me to like Ember. I didn’t dislike her either, I guess I was hoping for something to point to and say “yes, there she is!” But like with many short stories there wasn’t enough time to get there. However I will say, this is not my typical read, so I could be completely off base with my review. It’s a quick read, so I really suggest you read it for yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2021As with most of the author's stories, this is a quick and enjoyable read.
Ember's difficult life and frequent heartaches lead to multiple deaths. Who is the murderer? Ember isn't sure and certain signs lead the reader to believe it could be her. But is it?
Jeff, the detective assigned to figure out the truth isn't prepared for what he finds.
This is a fascinating novella for those who enjoy murder mystery with a twist.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021I've been enjoying this series, and this is another great addition. Ember grows up with fire: it plays a big part in her life story. Bad men died in fires her whole life. She remembers a hero who cared for her when she was a child. Did she meet another hero now as an adult?

4.0 out of 5 stars SNAPPY AND SNAZZY
Snappy, snazzy tale of Ember, a serial killer (traumatised by a childhood incident), and her pursuing policeman. Ember is always looking for her 'hero', and thinks she may have found him... Full of wit, suspense, and dark wackiness. Quick, stimulating read.
