About the author

R. A. Meenan was born in London during the golden age of science fiction, and learned from the best and brightest authors of that time (though if you asked her, she'd call this "college" or "getting a degree" or some nonsense).
Now an adult, she uses her incredible imagination to ride-hop intergalactic military spacecraft, comb the outer reaches of space and time, and write science fiction and contemporary fantasy stories based on her experiences. She's also hoping to find the perfect cup of coffee and a better way to grow dinosaurs. Her books tell the experiences of anthropomorphic and furry military personnel and race driver shifters.
She lives with her wonderful husband and the pair have four furry children (which are really cats, but don't tell them that) and one human child named after a video game character. She also spends her spare time teaching essay-writing haters, molding them into people resembling Actual Students and Lovers of English.
She may not win the hearts of stiff military men or students who want good grades for no effort, but she certainly captures the spirit and imagination of time travelers, magic users, nerds, Students-In-Training, and fantasy lovers.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2016I've been reading this series with enjoyment. This kind of furry fiction isn't really my thing, but the author does a good job of selling the worldbuilding. After White Assassin, I had a very poor view of Neil. I went into Tanned Hide not expecting much good from him--I mean, in White Assassin, he's a manipulative jerk who basically ruins Trecheon's life.
Anyway, I was sucked in from the first page. Neil actually lands his magic hit--the one hit against a Bad Guy which will redeem all his other kills. Except this might just be a sting. Neil is put firmly in his place by the end, leaving me aching for him and wishing for the story to continue. Very good read!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2023Fans of The Zyearth Chronicles ought to enjoy in this short book, featuring one of the series' main characters and another one in a supporting role. The author chronicles a side story involving these two to help flesh out the worldbuilding of the greater Zyearth saga. Main character Neil dragged his service buddy Trecheon into the dirty business of assassination back in White Assassin, keeping his conscience clear seeking after that "magic hit"--the one assassination that would save multitudes from misery and suffering. They find one such, or so they think. The hit goes off without a hitch, or so they think. Neil comes to realize too late that if you play with snakes, sooner or later you're sure to get bit. And in so doing, he will endanger the very parents and beloved younger brother he had gone to great lengths to protect (though this reader found how it all went down somewhat contrived.) Readers can expect a heart-wrenching end to this piece, establishing Neil's character and motivations for the rest of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2022Well-written but short and ends on an unsatisfying cliffhanger. It also seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the other books of The Zyearth Chronicles, despite what it's called.
