About the author

Mark Cassell lives on the south-east coast of the United Kingdom with his wife and many animals. His jobs have included baker, lab technician, driving instructor, actor, and was once a spotlight operator for an Elvis Presley impersonator.
As the author of the best-selling Shadow Fabric mythos, he’s written under several pen names with over 150 stories published in magazines and anthologies. Though his passion remains embedded in dark fantasy and horror, he’s written steampunk, fantasy and sci-fi, and regularly crosses the blurry lines between genres.
Most recently he’s seen publication in the children’s market. In particular, a Would You Rather game book series that has proven popular, and a successful range of pirate activity books. Mark often says how the “Pirate Thing” is a latent interest that will always astonish him.
A proud addition to his bibliography is through Caffeine Nights Publishing with the horror novel, Parasite Crop. Since signing that contract, he remains humbled in the knowledge he now shares the same publisher as one of his literary heroes from the late-1980s, a bygone time when he sneakily read novels at the back of school classrooms.
Incidentally, Mark never got caught.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2021I enjoyed reading these stories very much. Some were sad, while others carried a sense of utmost hopelessness. Good writing
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2021The author mixed two genres to make a wonderful, horror and SF connection. Inspiration were ordinary events that turn into supernatural. Characters experienced karma and lessons for sinister behavior.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2021“Six” is exactly what you’d think. Six creepy short stories from the twisted mind of Mark Cassell. This will be a short review and it is a short book, a quick read but it does not skimp on quality. The quality of these stories is top-notch and full of terror, and chills. “Skin” completely creeped me out as I read about Gloria’s discovery in the basement, in her frantic search for her husband, after hearing a scream rise up from below. In a marriage plagued with troubles, she is still caring and compassionate and wastes no time in going to her husband's aid. She was not the least bit prepared for what she found.
Dinner at Grandma’s will never feel the same for me after reading “All in the Eyes.” Young Bobby was not comfortable around his grandma, never comfortable in her presence, especially when she stared at him with her deep, black eyes. He always felt like she was trying to see into his soul, and he never felt the same after. After reading this tale, I recalled receiving a few of those stares myself, from my own grandmother and broke out in chills.
“In Loving Memory” takes us on a walk down memory lane as a man recalls his childhood friend and a terrible accident that had happened. How far would you go for a friend, especially when they call on you after twenty years, of being in the ground?
“The Space Between the Spaces” was naturally my favorite as it tells a cleverly creepy tale about my idol, Mr. Edgar Allan Poe and his neighbor as the neighbor answers the questions set to him by the Insector, after Poe’s untimely demise. The writing was spot on, exactly as I imagine one might have spoken around that time and the tale was every bit as creepy and tense as “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Very well-done, Mr. Cassell. You have my continued admiration for this story, alone.
“On Set with North” is a story about disaster striking a movie set as a new actor and his driving instructor appear on location, to get North ready for his make-up and into costume. The instructor, solely along for the ride in hopes to get an autograph for his wife, finds himself pulled into the chaos that is unfolding on set, chaos that was definitely NOT in the script.
The last story tells us about a pair of siblings, Anna and Mick, going through their parents' things, at their childhood home, after the death of their mom, while the world is in the throes of a slow demise as a result of a virus. “Don’t Swear In Mum’s House” takes a creepy turn for the worse when an old friend shows up to play.
Four solid stars for a short but satisfyingly creepy collection.

Their childhood imaginary friend turns out to be very real. And not very nice.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2021This is a great little book of six short stories of varying degrees of horror. I loved the first one, Skin, especially. Vividly written, I couldn't put it down. Great for when you need a quick fix of terror.

In the shadows of this ghost story it's not just the world that's a dangerous place, the danger lies within, our homes, our lives, our friends. This short story is a griping tale of shock, horror, science and ghost. This tale grips the reader in multiple fashions with a mix of crime, thrill, ghost, science, and paranormal activity, a fast pace thrill ride parallel only to the twilight zone. Susan, Mac, mick, Sophia, anna, Jason, North, necrotech, CC, and mister face all help to sin this tale into our nightmares in mark cassel's six.
I give this book a 3 out of 5
I have high expectations when it comes to watching a horror film and more so when reading a book of horror. Mark cassel's six embodied all of those elements but that was it. Cassel had many great ideas with this book, he is a creative author but with an uncontrolled perspective the author brutalized this lack of control with the first ten pages.
Cassel has good writing skills but they were shorted in this book this book being only 77 pages after barely getting an understanding of the story, the book abruptly goes into another story with different people and a different situation, to read good writing is enjoyable. But its sad to say that you are continuously searching and griping for details trying to pull together the fabrics of the book, constantly trying to connect the life and death to the story, which only aids in getting you to the final chapter.
So I give this book a 3 out of 5, because the author is good, but not only did I feel he was rushed, I also feel he got lost in the details and instead of weaving a good story, he complied details and ideas or combined an archive of short stories and old ideas with a careless desperation.
Mark cassel's SIX.

4.0 out of 5 stars Six Spine Tinglers
A chilling collection of stories. A woman is shocked by the happenings in her basement. A man sets out to buy his wife an anniversary gift only to experience death and mayhem. Some experiments are gory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of darkness to enjoy
Thoroughly enjoyed this collection from Mark Cassell. He excels at keeping the reader enthralled, and compells them to turn the page with the dark, tense suspense, and these stories are no exception.
I really enjoyed In Loving Memory, and the idea of what a lightning strike can do. But I think On Set -with North was my favourite. True horror at its finest, but definitely not for the faint-hearted or the squeamish. If you like the dark gothic, Victorian writing style of the likes of Poe, then The Space Between Spaces, which I love for its otherworldly, dark intrigue.
There's much to enjoy here. This is also a good introduction to Mark Cassell's work, so if you haven't yet tried his dark delights, this is a good starting point before you tackle the Shadow Fabric novel and the myriad stories surrounding the mythos. I can't recommend Mark's writing enough. He has a defined clear style that I really enjoy reading.
