USN Chief, Ret..VT Town TOP 500 REVIEWER on November 17, 2016Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Imagine the plight of a mother in raising five girls without theirdad? The youngest of them is 'Pipi' -short for Philipa. She is bulliedin school and her two of her older sisters are there to help her. Oneday Walter Spencer 'Wax' takes an interest in her. He is not able toverbalize his feelings for her and they are best friends for a number of years. Until.... no spoilers here.

This book covers a lot ofterritory considering its length. I like the fact that the authorrelates some statistics about the Viet Nam war. Of further interest tome, was the feeling that Pipi has concerning the frequent absences ofher father. For some reason, we normally hear about the other side ofthe coin so this was an incredible glimpse into a young girl's mind forme. It also shows the depth of love that Pipi's mother holds for herand her other siblings. Mrs. Weiner was strong and dedicated to hervery core of existence.

For me, a most interesting story whichdelves deeply into the psyches of both the younger ages and the olderones. Truly amazing how life turns out when least expected.

Most highly recommended.

From the Author

In 1971, our baby boy just five months old, my twenty-one year old Air Force Airman husband left for Vietnam. The experience of saying Goodbye honestly felt like he was swallowed up by the earth. Dramatic, but true. I walked around in a daze for the next year and I say this knowing that as difficult as it was for me and Baby, it was one hundred times harder for my husband.

Forty-five years later, he is finally talking about his experience overseas and what it was like coming back to the US. It took him all this time to tell us that he and his fellow servicemen were spit at as they stepped off the plane at the Detroit airport. The months that followed were a nightmare for him. Unfortunately, he felt compelled to dispose of all of the mementos of that time, his ribbons and uniforms. The only thing we have are photographs I hoarded.

In my story Mademoiselle, elements from my life wound their way in; the house the Wieners live in is the same house I lived in during my high school years, the map of Vietnam on their wall with the stick pins following the fighting was on my bedroom wall. The fear of the unmarked car pulling up to the house was my fear. And gratefully, never realized.

I love the story of the young girl and her dreams of living a certain kind of life and then discovering it is far different than what will bring her joy.

Though a sweet story and I enjoyed it, I felt it ended abruptly. I wanted to know why "WAX" never "hung out" with her during summer vacations (even though he lived nearby) and why he never even asked her for an ice cream or movie date...only school dances. I would have liked the sharing of "sweet nothings" in the hospital towards the end too.
I also had trouble with some typos and grammar slip-ups. For example: lie, lay, lying, lain(people) vs lay and laid(things); then (time) vs. than (comparison). The worst--and funniest typo was "candy stripper"! Whoops! I should hope not! That should be "striper"! K

Intestingly written in first person pov. Interesting charactee and family. Romance weird but quirky but made sense. However I feel cheated. I either lost a whole chapter or I was under a coma myself. The author does a great job of getting you to understabd Pippi and then WHAM! She does an about face and you afre left wondering how she went from C to Z. What happened to get to her happy ending? So yes spoiler here - She went from begrudgingly having to go see her "best friend" who is in a coma to next page married to him! So weird. It would have been nice - and I checked but I didnt see pages missing - to see how she felt when she saw him and how she came to thr realization about her feelings. Apparently its okay to just jump from having no feelings to being married the next moment. Not kidding when I say the chapter went from "Oh they are making me go seee him" to bext page "I'm married now". What happened!? She seemed so apathetic that it would have helpeds see her begin to transition from her being less robotic in feelings. Which is really strange because she has moments where she shows feelings so it would have been nice to see that staet with him. Then the jump to being married would have not been so jarring .

Beautiful, heart touching book. I loved it. A shy girl who has 4 older sisters grows up in the suburbs and a boy from around the corner becomes her best friend on the first day of high school.

I liked the story but the timeline jumped around too much. It would be an easier read if it didn’t. I think the story stayed in one place too long and sped up at the end leaving much to be desired of the characters.

I loved all the characters. Pipi is the main one but we get to know her sisters and mother. They had interesting stories just as Pipi did. I wish I had a large family as they did. They took up for each other.

This was a nice read and I really was surprised at the ending! Suzanne Jenkins gives it her all even when writing a shorter story. I would recommend!

Growing up as a child of the 1950’s I was ripe to experience and realize everything which had been going on around me, especially as I got older the horrors of the VietNam War had proliferated all around me, luckily my family had been fortunate not to have it touch as it did so many others. However, for the gorgeous Pipi Wiener, her mother and her four older sisters it had not, especially when her father had died in it; which had caused her to place such things as love and a HEA on the back burners of her life.

Growing up as the proverbial baby of the family of an all-female household reading Mademoiselle had always been a regular routine, so much so, Pipa had a dream of writing for it once she had gotten out of school. It became a concerted effort for her and her family to be able to move on with their lives having the ultimate horror of the war hanging now over their head.

All is fine; everything had become going as planned until Walter Spencer steps into to Pipa’s life as a young love begins to develop between the two. But unfortunately her commitment to stick to her dream job goal and Walter’s inability to articulate how he actually feels to Pipa leaves their relationship to go as far as only remaining the best of friends for years.

This story has an extremely compacted timeline and lot happens in the pages it does have. Pipa even though Walter never said anything about his love for her, she knew it had been there. Walter became broken hearted on account of this and took a job away from her, but he can’t ever forget anything about her. The story is loaded with a wide angle view of emotions about life itself.

Readers are left in the end with Pipa having to make a choice for the rest of her life. Does she follow her dream or does she follow her heart? A choice for which I’ve given Ms. Jenkins 5 STARS for the story she’s given us here.

As an aside; I can understand why the author had chosen the title she did, it had been the dream job for her protagonist, Pipa. However, I feel a different title, such as “Do I Follow My Heart” might have been a somewhat better title.
