Silverthorn: The Dorset Boy book 10 Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,376 ratings

Prince George finally gets his way and makes Marty a Viscount and the Navy promote him to Commodore, but what's the catch? He is a political hot potato in England after killing Graves, the slaver, and the powers that be decide that to get him out of the way his talents are best directed towards South America. Wellington is kicking Napoleon out of the peninsula and the British government realize that Spain could become a major competitor to their world trade if they can regain control of their South American holdings. Bolivar has led Colombia to independence and Venezuela and Argentina are close behind. The British do not want that to stop. The other problem in the region is that the war of 1812 with America is at its height and America is sending privateers to raid the Caribbean to disrupt British trade.. Marty is made Governor of Aruba and publicly his squadron is to help counter the privateer threat, his real mission to encourage the Juntas to fight for independence in a way that cannot be attributed to Britain. The finale is his recall to Britain in 1814 to be one of the commissioners who escort Napoleon into exile on the island of Elba, what he discovers there convinces his masters that the war will not be over until Napoleon is dead or removed far enough away to be neutralized. Another all action book in The Dorset Boy Series.

Just finished the book. Like I always say have to pay attention to everything in your books or you will miss something important. Very neatly done closing the loop on the Gold that was hidden in Valencia. I had written in a feedback on one of the books what was to become of it The doctor's operation on Marty reminded me of the Master and Commander series. There is so much going on in the story you really can't realize it all in a feedback. Once again I find myself wanting more. I have to learn to not plow through your books and savor them but it just happens that I can't put them down. Book 11 will be something I foresee and can't wait to read. Also, I can see young James and Beth following in their parent's footsteps down the road.

Not bad reading, but lacking in detail. The editing is very poor, grammatically and there are numerous spelling errors and transpositions throughout. Still, enjoyable for a casual reader.

Colorful historically accurate adventure on the seas; in harbors, jungles and forests. Captivating education on ships, naval and marine weaponry.

Marty meets and even becomes friends with Napoleon. He informs intelligence that Napoleon will indeed fight again and of course he does. France and Britain are at war again. Now Matty will be...Marty. Lol

I enjoy the series and am reading the entire collection but I’m finding it incredibly annoying that the author keeps making spelling and grammatical mistakes but more importantly gets his characters mixed up. In particular, since James has become a more senior player Marty is often misused as the character which is being written about. Surely as the author you should remember which character you are showing ? Very annoying.

Marty and gang travel to the Caribbean, fight American privateers as part of the War of 1812, engage in the South American independence movement and Napoleon’s downfall and exile to Elba. All this: In a single book. Well done. Wonder if there’ll be a next book on Napoleon’s return all the way to Waterloo and St. Helena.

this author dives into the story. No small talk, or excessive back rounds, Like he is telling a bedtime story. In the beginning of his work, I waited for more outside details. LUCKY FOR ME, THEY DIDN'T COME.His hero brags a lot, if this were the movies, he would be Bogart, Eastwood, maybe even (what's his name.....)

Though often improbable, the adventures of Marty are certainly entertaining. Always a twist or turn in the direction of the story (what happened to his son, as example) which keeps the reader focused and looking for what comes next. Looking forward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another instalment in the highly entertaining Dorset Boy saga
Reviewed in Australia on June 13, 2021
The series seems to have moved into wind down mode without some of the thrills and spills of the previous books as the Napoleonic wars are near their end and Marty has moved into middle age. But still highly diverting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, spoilt by numerous spelling errors
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 11, 2021
I have lowered the rating by one star because of the number of spelling errors throughout the book (e.g. Adversary, boeuf).l
Please use a good proofreader for future books!

I have greatly enjoyed the series so far, and hopefully there will be at least one more when Marty is part of the escort to St Helens - or maybe even the Governor.

These are like that film you've watched a few times, you could read again for relaxation. They are easy reads with good swashbuckling yarns and fond kisses. Not overly bloody considering the times. Lucky hero always raises a smile. You can read in a couple nights and look forward to season 11 if there is one.
