To Bargain with a Highland Buccaneer: A Passionate Enemies to Lovers Scottish Highlander Historical Mystery Romance Adventure (Heart of a Scot Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 246 ratings

His heart would never be his to give. Not again.

Bryston McPherson lost everything the night his wife was murdered. Now all he wants is peace—a respite from the grief and guilt that have haunted him since that night. Then a fiery Highlander bursts into his life, bringing with her the kind of excitement and happiness he was
sure he'd never feel again. He doesn't deserve her. But that doesn't stop him from wishing everything was different...and that he could claim her for his own.

Branwen Glanville's life took a
very unexpected turn when she met Bryston. She never imagined she'd end up spirited away to the former buccaneer's ship, fearing for her life—and his. And she certainly never thought she'd fall for the surly Scot who saved her from certain death. But...she did. Too bad he seems so intent on remaining alone and miserable forever...

Is a fairy tale, happily ever after ending possible for these polar opposites? Maybe. If Bryston can keep Branwen alive long enough to claim it, that is...

From the Author

Dear Reader,

I know it's unusual to have a Highlander who spends more time on the ocean than in the Highlands, but Bryston's character demanded it. His and Branwen's romance isn't your typical Scottish historical, but I think you'll find the change intriguing.

I took a wee bit of author license with a few facts in this story. For instance, the great age of piracy on Tortuga ended in the late 1600s, but I extended it into the early 1700s for the purpose of this tale. Privateers received a letter of marque that basically made being a pirate legal--all for a good cause, of course. Some pirates did retire and go on to live respectable lives.

Nearly eight hundred women did volunteer to become the wives of French colonists in places like Tortuga between 1663 and 1673. They were called
Filles du Roi, which means King's Daughters. Leith did have a street named Abbey Street, but the wharves weren't clearly visible from there. There was also a brothel called Lucky Spence's House and a tavern named the Queen's Arms.

One more fun tidbit for you...I didn't know Branwen's name meant beautiful raven when I picked her name for the series. In the opening scene of TO BARGAIN WITH A HIGHLAND BUCCANEER, there's a scene with Branwen and a raven. My muse often knows more than I do!

Happy reading!

Hugs,

Collette

Will their journey heal his heart and open it to a new love ...

While this one is the last in a series, I only read the previous book. But it does not impede the reading of this book, it can perfectly be appreciated as a standalone.
This book was a nice road movie, even if little part of the story is set on the sea.
I liked both main characters, Branwen is not shirking violet. When things turned awry, she is no one to weep or lament, she follows the flow and faces every trials head held high. She also knows what she innerly wants, she won’t compromise.
While Bryston might concede to his own oath, as despite his pledge to his late wife to never love again, he considers after his time spend in Branwen’s company, she could be a good spouse if amenable to his lack of love, even if he would never open his heart again.
This is a fast paced story as they are on the run, in a quest to outsmart the villain behind their flight. Along the course of their journey, sentiments are revealed, but will circumstances allow them full rein.
A sweet tale of a second chance at love, 4.5 stars.

I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publishing, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

At the end of a day of touring ruins of an old abbey, Branwen Glanville looked forward to a tour of the port with her family and Bryston McPherson. Branwen had always wished for adventure, but being grabbed by Bryston and running for their lives from a crazed pirated wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. This villain not only believes Bryston knows of a great treasure, but murdered his wife trying to get information. He chases them from Scotland to France where he and Bryston confront each other. Will this finally put the ghosts of his past to rest?

The Heart of a Scot ends with a dangerous and exciting adventure. Bryston and Branwen are joined by an interesting and entertaining cast of characters, some good, some wicked, some familiar and some new. This one ends with some very nice surprises that bring the series to a lovely conclusion.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

A braw Scot, a visual feast to be appreciated. "Tall, his pale blond hair braided and pulled back at the sides, scarred and tattooed, his Viking heritage on display for all to see, the Highland warrior fairly exuded power, strength and intimidation." Oh yes Bryston McPherson was sigh worthy, agent for the crown and a buccaneer. Yes, it keeps getting better!
Yes, Branwen had to turn away so he would not catch her "oglin' the mon, plain and simple." How could anybody resist! But Bryston was being followed and he and Branwen had to make a run for his ship!
Adventure, villains, a sigh worthy Scot and a feisty heroine bring this story full circle on a journey not soon forgotten! Collette does it again with her delightful stories and wraps up this amazing series in fine bow. Do not miss this or anything this author writes!

A tantalising pirate adventure fueled by wit, passion, heartache, revenge and love!
Bryston and Branwen's story sadly marks the end of what remains an enjoyable and wonderfully absorbing series packed with an abundance of heart and dazzlingly real characters who just happen to be entangled in a cloak of torment, peril and sinister villiany as true love and happiness quite literally stumbles at their feet.
Loved every minute of this especially the unexpected twists and turns that led to some delightful moments for Bryston and Branwen - one nevermore so that the time spent with the plucky girls of Lucky Spence’s House and within its lascivious walls. All satisfactorily crafted with Cameron's unique charm, beguile and wit, a signature I have come to expect and relish from this author.

A tale that can be enjoyed as a standalone but holds a whole wealth of stolen moments that enrich each connection, bond and friendship, forged across each separate book throughout the series, and links them together even more so when indulged in order.

This was a sweet story but I was disappointed as it could have been so much better and exciting. The hero had it all but his character wasn’t brought out, only his looks. The heroine was sweet but that’s all. There was no substance to either of them. No great emotion either. The book was light with the bits that would make it interesting left out.
