4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,311 ratings

A family feud - a troubled teen - a hotly contested will

Where there’s a will, there’s an attorney. And a handwriting expert. Or two.
When Claudia Rose is tasked with identifying the decedent’s signature on a hotly contested will, she has no idea that she is about to be plunged into the middle of an ugly family feud.

The adversaries are her client, ‘the trophy wife’ — a younger woman who married a wealthy older man, versus the bitter adult stepchildren determined to hang on to their father’s estate, which includes an exclusive girls school. When the stepchildren hire an unscrupulous “expert” to challenge Claudia’s opinion, the courtroom becomes a battleground where reputations are on the line. Only one of them can emerge victorious.

But all this feels like nothing compared to the angst of a fourteen-year-old student at the school who Claudia has committed to help in the hopes of pulling her back from the brink of despair.
Then, one of the parties to the case disappears and the teen becomes a suspect. Claudia no longer knows who to trust or where to turn. With the pressure mounting, and attempting to navigate a dangerous situation, she faces the one betrayal she never expected.

Can she uncover the truth before someone pays the ultimate price?

She has the will to do it, but can she find the way?

Sheila Lowe's second book in the series is a very well-written, entertaining thriller, pitting a handwriting expert (who often has an aversion to calling the cops when she probably should call them) against an array of very unsavory characters.

Claudia Rose is the heroine, reluctantly, but inexorably pulled into the plot's maelstrom by a Court case which requires her expertise in handwriting analysis. During the course of her investigation Claudia meets and takes a genuine interest in a troubled teenager, Annabelle Lee Giordano.

Annabelle is living one very tragic life. With the story set inside an exclusive private Southern California school where the girl is a student, Claudia begins to encounter the players who will take her on an increasingly terrifying ride through a Court battle over a sizable estate, the years-old mysterious death of Annabelle's mother that perhaps was not so accidental, an ongoing deadly love triangle among the school's staff members, a horrific murder, and another in-progress crime so sinister that I'm not going to give any more away here.

Does Claudia resolve any of the crimes and conflicts? Can she hang on to her own love interest with all this professional conflict interrupting their relationship? Does she survive the investigation and all the danger it brings her way? You'll have to buy the book and read it for yourself.

As a retired law enforcement officer who consulted with trained document examiners and relied on their Court testimony in many of my criminal investigations, Sheila Lowe's credentials as a handwriting expert intrigued me. So, I bought the Kindle version. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and highly recommend Written In Blood.

This second book of the series is excellent!
Claudia is hired to testify that the signature on a will is valid. This turns into a nightmare, as sibling stepchildren
do everything in their power to make life miserable for the widow, who won the contest. Just the start!
From there, Claudia is drawn into teaching handwriting therapy to a student, and things gone exponentially wrong!
The plot is one I've encountered before, and Ms Lowe handled it brilliantly. But the ending? WOW! Read it for yourself to find out!

I love the idea of a story built around a handwriting expert and her talents with discovering personality traits, etc. The first part of the book was really interesting because it discussed handwriting and how it can play a role in legal debates and also in law-enforcement. I really wish there was more written about the handwriting analysis. (i.e., maybe write other handwriting analysis cases into the story to play up Claudia's expertise.)

I found the main character to be rather foolish in taking the risks that she took in the later parts of the story. Because she was closely aligned to law enforcement (having to make court appearances as an expert witness and having a boyfriend in law enforcement) she should have been more savvy to how criminals work. I knew the minute Bert showed up in Vegas that he was the guilty party. I also surmised by their treatment of Claudia and Kelly over a "stolen vehicle" that Henry and Lainie were involved. The addition of the "Russian children" being held captive felt like the author dropped in another storyline to either lengthen the story or spice it up. I don't think that storyline added much to the book. I could see Bert's involvement as "legit" just because he was jealous of Cruz's relationship with Paige and/or his desire to marry a wealthy widow to help his financial woes.

The book was acceptable but looks to have lacked necessary proofreading. Words were left out and thoughts were incomplete which left me to figure it out on my own. (This was especially true in the second half of the book which led me to believe the author was quickly trying to make a deadline.). I would expect this out of a beginning author - especially a teenaged one - but not out of an experienced author. I also do not like to read books with the "F" word or cursing God, etc. I think it sounds low class and does not add anything to the storyline.

In all fairness to this author, and because I like books about handwriting analysis, I will read another of this authors books in the hopes of finding that this book was the only exception in the series. I can't rate this any better than 3 stars.

Although the culprit's identity was easy to figure out, I still found myself staying up late to finish the book.

The only thing I didn't like was how fast the relationship between Claudia and Joel seemed to develop. When I read a cozy, I much prefer to see the personal relationships develop over several books, rather than having the main character prematurely shoved into one "off-screen" in order to rush along that aspect of the story. It was particularly irritating in this book, because the relationship had nothing whatsoever to do with the plot or moving it along.

Looking forward to the next in the series!

Her occupation is interesting and gives you a glimpse into the characters she gets involved with as the story moves along and helps her to understand the people she's dealing with. There is plenty of action and twists. I will be reading more from Ms. Lowes as I can't wait to see what adventure Claudia gets involved.

I got this book because it was free. It is a fast paced thriller and although good, once I got about half way through, I found I was absolutely enthralled and the book became a page turner.

At first, I have to admit, I was sceptical as to what a handwriting expert could offer to a book and found myself enjoying the book so much.

    A good 4* book.
