About the author

Author and poet - Karen Honnor lives in Surrey, UK, with her husband Stuart, two grown-up children, Matthew and Zoe and their dog, Gizmo. Alongside filling up her collection of notebooks and people watching in coffee shops as she writes, Karen devotes her time to family, dog walking, gardening and baking. The little details of her everyday, often spark a new inspiration and she enjoys seeing where such discoveries might take her. Often the result is a poem or a blog post, or something that becomes a much bigger project, as happened when writing her historical fiction novella - 'Unravelling. A tale of strength, love and dementia.'
Over the years, Karen has published poetry and enjoyed writing scripts for her local drama group to perform. Writing has been her lifelong passion and she holds onto her dream to sit in a turreted house by the sea and write. Motherhood and a teaching career of almost thirty years left little time for this but in 2018 she closed her classroom door to focus fully on her writing. Whilst continuing with her commitments to her drama group as producer, script writer, choreographer and supplier of home-baked lemon drizzle cake, Karen has now completed six books.
Her first, a memoir called 'Finding My Way,' has received 5 star reviews and led to Karen leading talks about issues connected with midlife, mental health and menopause. Her poetry chapbook 'Diary of a Dizzy Peri' presents her poems as a diary of her experiences, touching upon the highs and lows of the transitional phase of midlife in a way that uses humour, empathy and honesty across its pages. A recent radio interview praised its style and themes as inspirational. She followed it up with the book that she is perhaps most proud of - 'Unravelling.' A fictional story telling of how the love and connections of family are stretched to the limit, when faced with the ripple effect of dementia. Karen's experience of losing her Dad to dementia, forms the cornerstone to this sensitively told story.
More recently, Karen has published a further three poetry collections - 'Click and Connect - A Collection of Hope,' 'Polaroids and Petals,' and 'Just Take Five.' She is humbled to hear how these books are making a difference to people, being read by High School students and in local community projects, helping to spread kindness and understanding.
She may not yet have her turret to write in, but she is proud to be part of the writing community and publishing her work. Keep up to date with Karen's writing story, blog posts and poetry via her website: https://www.karenhonnor.com/

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2022Polaroids and Petals by Karen Honnor is a beautiful glimpse into this poet’s mind. From “Seashell” to “Puzzle Pieces” to “Pick N Mix,” readers will delight. So many lovely pieces here, that together, like Honnor states in “It’s Not a Race,” ‘All the flowers together make a garden sing’— each of her poems make this collection sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Polaroids and Petals wrap you in warmth and nostalgia…
I get a lovely sense of comfort, from the way Karen Honnor draws me in to the warmth and nostalgia of days gone by. It’s also easy for me to recognise my younger self among the thoughts and emotions she shared in this beautiful collection of poetry.
Divided into three highly emotive sections, Karen’s poems transport me from childhood, through my teens, and into womanhood.
‘Ordinary Moments’ (page 17) from Section One ‘Sepia Days’, is a case in point for me: How I used to love the ‘Radio hit-parade’, recording my favourites on ‘cassette tapes’ to bring me hours of pleasure later on. I remember ‘Click-clacks and a ra-ra skirt’ with a fondness for the days of youth. And
‘Running past the alleyways
When it was getting dark.’ I used to stay out with friends for hours without a care. There was a freedom then, which I think a lot of people yearn for now.
‘Dreamscape’ (page 46) from Section Two, ‘A Pocketful of Posies’ takes me to the good times with my parents before circumstances broke up our family. Karen’s imagery is so evocative in this poem:
‘Polaroids and petals ,
Both were strewn across clean sheets,
Beautifully fragile.’ This draws me in, because I treasure the few photographs I have of family life (particularly of my father).
‘Fleeting moments spread before me,
Cascades of joy and youth’, and I’m so grateful for my small box of memories.
With ‘Sunday’ (page 57) from Section Three ‘More Than a Feeling’, Karen is spot on with her observations of what that day can mean, and again, her words paint a calming picture:
‘Birds bestow their greetings from their branches,
And the morning light hangs in the air,
Kissing strips of grey cloud,
A promise suspended,
Stretching un-ended over a pastel washed day.’
I treasure the vibes that I feel on Sundays (we all need the chance to recharge), and Karen reinforces them for me, here.
I find that I can take some courage from ‘Fly if You Want To’ (page 63) Simple rhyming couplets guide the reader towards stepping out of comfort zones:
‘Be bold enough to take a leap from the safety of the floor,
Give yourself permission to be different from before.’
Karen sends out a strong message which can be revisited over time to help build confidence.
There is something for everyone in ‘Polaroids and Petals’ I’ve commented on just a few pieces that have immediately struck a chord with me, but I’ve enjoyed and taken something from, every poem. It is a book that gives much pleasure in one sitting, but also with reading particular poems according to your moods.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
Karen Honnor’s Polaroids and Petals is touching, nostalgic, and tender without being sentimental.
There is a clear distraction in tone and content between the Polaroids/ Petals sections and I enjoyed them for different reasons. We begin with Polaroids and take a trip down memory lane - these poems are simple and clear slices of history, packed with familiar references and very sensory. As she says: ‘small, ordinary moments’ - which are the crux of all our lives. Whereas the language is straightforward and accessible here, and I was whisked back to Woolworths and Blockbusters with her, the poems in the Petals section are much more crafted, with some beautiful language choices:
‘The jasmine’s in bloom next door,
Tendrils stretching over our fence,
Their scent cascading,
Delicate flowers catching my eye through the window.’
My favourite poems were Sea Shell, and Hidden Hope. I know I shall return to them again and again. Exquisite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic poetry in contemporary style
A little trip down memory lane poetry style. Delve into nostalgia and recall the simple pleasures of life. Karen Honnor's latest collection goes quicker than your pocket money but you will want to savour it. Unlike your pick 'n' mix it will still be there waiting for you when you go back to sample it's delights again. Karen's relatable rhymes touch places few poets venture into. Perhaps that's why I am such a fan. Well done Mrs Honnor, keep them coming, I will keep reading them.
