Before I start any Suzanne Jenkins book, I know her characters will be multi-layered and authentic; her plots, page-turners. I was certainly not disappointed with Running With Horses. Set against a backdrop of the world of wild horses and those people who make sure they stay that way, versus the greedy opportunists who sell them purely for profit and not caring when they are slaughtered for human consumption, this book quickly turns into a fascinating look at the motivations of everyone involved.

It is also very suspenseful. Early on, when Mindy is in a local cafe with her childhood friend, Antonia, and Randy, the new hot guy with whom she clicks, bam! there is a shooting, a dead body, and someone who mysteriously runs away. Wow. Those pages keep turning at a faster pace so we can find out who did the killing. But it’s far more than that. We find out what the complicated motivation for the deed is.

Detailed horse rides into the dense countryside coated in memories of her childhood with her new love interest and her dear grandfather not only helps to solve the murder, it brings out family secrets and motivations Mindy had never been told. Excellent! Highly recommended.

Before Mindy Murphy helps her grandfather take horses from their ranch to another one to escape the warmth of the Mojave Desert, she wants to spend some time with her good friend. They meet up at a local café, where Randy Johnson comes to speak with her. She knows him as being an activist against mistreatment of wild horses, an issue that she also despises. During their meal, a disturbance leads to shots fired and someone being killed. Afterward, the life of Mindy only gets more complicated.

The way in which Suzanne Jenkins describes the scenes in the story make each situation seem realistic. Her vividly colorful words also make the circumstances come alive and let me experience the moment, too. There are quite a few times when Mindy rides her horse, and these moments were especially interesting to me when it involved some of the wild horses. What happens to these animals in the story is not only informative but let me see how different people react to the same topic. Lots of research must have been done, as the author makes every detail come across as accurate.

Many emotional matters must be dealt with by Mindy, from those concerning her family and a friend to even a special man. As she learns facts related to these people, she has to look deep within herself in order to make the best choices. The author gives her much to overcome in a short period, and I was repeatedly touched by what she had to face. RUNNING WITH HORSES blends romance with a little intrigue and plenty of emotions to create a compelling story.

Mindy, who works at her grandfather's ranch, and her best friend Antonia, a local veterinarian who works for a federal agency, along with two men they just met, uncover deceptive practices at a local ranch. This is a wonderful, precious, heart tugging story. I loved it!

Running with Horses by Suzanne Jenkins is a good story. It is told in narrative form so it is difficult to become attached to the characters. Sometimes in jumps into first person to give a peek, but not enough to really care. It jumps time frequently too, but this holds true to the characters who are overly cautious. Thankfully, it this book has a great plot so it was easy to stay involved.

*I read this as part of the Love Under Fire anthology.
