The Book Boyfriend: A Plus-Size Paranormal Romance Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 122 ratings

CROWNED HEART WINNER AND RONA NOMINATED

Emmeline always dreamed of being an author, finding comfort in words and between the pages of her beloved romance novels, but a mental health diagnosis leaves her blocked and unable to write. Then she inherits a crumbling, second-hand bookshop from a mysterious old friend and Emmy discovers that magic is real. Maybe her fantasies about the heroes in her favourite historical romances aren’t so far-fetched after all?

Lord Jonathan Dalgliesh is the handsome stranger — wielding a sword as dangerous as his Tudor past — who appears in Emmy’s bookshop asking for help. Together they must race against time itself to lift the curse imprisoning him inside an ancient book. But when growing threats to Emmy’s safety are proved real and not another symptom of her illness, she must learn to trust her own voice again. Can she find the words to save Jonathan and her shop before tragedy strikes on the fateful final page?

Romance-addict Emmy may be, but this damsel is about to kick distress into the Ever After.

Featuring a fierce, body-positive, fat and tall heroine; a swoon-worthy Tudor hero; A+ mental health rep; Romancelandia references galore; a dusty Devon bookshop setting; history, mystery, magic; sonnets, secrets, spells; and a grumpy bookshop cat, The Book Boyfriend is a cozy, witchy, slow burn, plus-size, time-travel romance, perfect for fans of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and A Highlander for Hannah and many more!

In her award-winning romantic-fantasy, "The Book Boyfriend," Jeanna skillfully combines the themes of love, magic, and self-discovery. The protagonist, Emmeline, faces challenges with her mental health that impact her writing abilities. Seeking solace in romance novels, Emmy’s life takes an unexpected turn when she inherits a dusty Devon bookshop.

Enter the enigmatic Lord Jonathan Dalgliesh, with a troubled past and a curse that only Emmy can help him break. Together, they race against the clock to save Jonathan and the bookshop, confronting not only external dangers but also their own inner struggles.

“The Book Boyfriend” is a cozy, slow-burn read filled with vibrant descriptions and a hint of mystical allure. Jeanna is a gifted storyteller who gives us beautiful prose, an enchanting plot, and a fat-positive heroine as she sensitively navigates the topic of mental illness with empathy and authenticity.

I found this to be a very sweet and a bit of a cozy read.

    Plus size FMC
    Mental Illness Rep
    He Falls First
    Curses
    Witches
    Smidge of a mystery
    Dual POV
    Cats
    Bookshop

The representation in this was really well done. Emmy was a fun character and as a plus size person myself, it’s really wonderful to see myself represented in characters- especially some of my thoughts.

Lately, I’ve been loving stories that center around bookshops so this really hit the mark with that.

There were moments where the build up was great then the scene fell a little flat but overall this really was a great story.

Perfect cozy and fun read for the spooky season or really any season.

I wanted so badly to LOVE this but in the end it was just okay. Some times I felt suspense building only for it to fizzle out or be anticlimactic. I absolutely LOVED the MC. Seeing a plus size character with a mental health illness is powerful. I felt like there were scenes missing for certain transitions… for example from her meeting Jonathan to them loving each other, it didn’t feel like enough happened or like they really knew each other. He was wary of her and she of him and then suddenly they were in love. Same goes for her wanting him to leave forever (which seemed randomly dramatic af), and then suddenly she decided no never mind let’s have sex. I loved the twist at the end with Maggie and Lizzie, and I loved the cat and old bookstore and witch vibes. I wish we had gotten more closure however with the fact that Lizzie was never actually her friend. Like was she faking it the entire time? Is Lizzie a sociopath? Was she truly their descendant? And I also don’t quite understand how Emmy was the most powerful word witch ever and it took her two years to write/bring him back. I expected a more immediate and powerful thing to happen when he returned, like she wrote their story or she wrote something within days or weeks. And I felt like their reuniting after two years should have been longer, not just a handful of sentences. These are all just my opinions of course. I felt like the writing was flowery and pretty and I enjoyed certain parts of this book and I felt the plot was unique. But it had just a few things missing and perhaps certain parts were drawn out too long, with little action causing some anticlimactic moments while other parts needed more explanation. All in all, it was okay!

One of the things I feel a lot recently is romance has lost its romance. There is so much focus on telling a trope that people forget to tell a story.

The Book Boyfriend is a story. The characters are fully fleshed out and you find yourself rooting for their HEA in the end not because you know it’s coming but because they deserve it.

I found this story entertaining. I love Emmeline! Plus sized beauty with problems, I can relate. It was interesting to see if she gets the guy in the end.

I can honestly say, as one who reads from daylight to dark, that I haven’t enjoyed a book so much in a very long time. Totally an all immersive read. Take the time to read this one. If you enjoy fantasy romance I guarantee you will have a good experience.

This was an awesome plus size fantasy romance. I laughed until I was breathless. It made my heart sing. I fell in love with the characters. A BBW female character with mental issues reads a book and out pops a guy from the Tudor era. I recommend this book.

It's cute, sweet, and magic and has enough of a mystery element that the end makes total sense. The way mental health is talked about is so relatable.

What did I like about this book?

    - A book about a bookstore owner, cool right?
    - Magic!
    - Some good mental health representation, showing a person who may have their moments of struggle but can also manage like other people etc, this was refreshing
    - Bit of slow burn romance
    - Quite a satisfying ending
    - Good emotions with stuff like greif etc
    - Loveable main character

Overall, a unique cosy and fun book which I enjoyed and recommend. Check trigger warnings beforehand but the author takes care with these heavy topics and it's worth the read if you're up for it :)
